The first new Tyne and Wear Metro train is finally in service! A long time coming, but a hugely significant day for the North East. This is the moment it picked up its first passengers at Pelaw station.

The new Metro trains still aren't actually allowed to run to Sunderland. Still awaiting completion of 'compatibility checks' on Network Rail lines beyond Pelaw towards South Hylton. Nexus says it should be resolved before the end of March.

Meanwhile, there are efforts to avoid a repeat of the flyover's sudden closure in December elsewhere on the North East's transport network. Bosses say they want to be 'more proactive' in looking after key pieces of crumbling infrastructure.
