The first new Tyne and Wear Metro train is finally in service! A long time coming, but a hugely significant day for the North East. This is the moment it picked up its first passengers at Pelaw station.

The new Metro trains still aren't actually allowed to run to Sunderland. Still awaiting completion of 'compatibility checks' on Network Rail lines beyond Pelaw towards South Hylton. Nexus says it should be resolved before the end of March.

A report from just five years before the Gateshead Flyover's closure predicted that it could stay in use until 2090, if properly (and expensively) maintained. Questions being asked about what happened since 2019 to change the situation so dramatically.
