After over a decade calling men’s and women’s local footy, VFL, NAB League and Wheelchair footy, I was lucky enough to make my
@AFLNation
calling debut today alongside Scotty Lucas.
Absolute privilege and had a blast. Big thanks to the many that have helped me over the years.

Very sad to hear of the passing of former VFA/VFL commentator Ross Booth, also an insightful sports economics expert. Was fortunate to have a lengthy chat with him a few years ago on radio about his career and was a friendly man. Thoughts with his family.
For any fans of the late Clinton Grybas, below is the earliest known footage of him calling sport as a very young broadcaster with
@footyefl
He would be picked up by the ABC only months later and the rest is history
Sad news. Deane was always generous and encouraging to young people coming through the ranks, but more importantly he was a good bloke. I will fondly remember his joy the morning after The Quarterback (a horse he part-owned) won the Newmarket.
RIP Deane Lester 💔
Cracking fella who’ll be sorely missed. A pioneer who raised the bar in the racing industry for work ethic and professionalism. A friend to all.
Happy 20th Birthday
@1116sen
!
A privilege to play a small part in a station I have grown with since my Primary School years.
The unique camaraderie between those working on the air, behind the scenes and the listeners should rightly be celebrated.
From 9pm on
@1116sen
, two of footy's great characters will jump on the line:
-Glenn Manton (fmr Essendon and Carlton defender)
-Alex Ishchenko (imposing fmr WCE, Brisbane and Nth Melbourne ruckman)
Both played in some classic Finals matches and both have unique stories to tell
For what it's worth, six players in history have been charged and fined by the Tribunal for shaking a goal post including Stewart Loewe, Doc Wheildon and Dustin Fletcher (below)
My favourite Comettism was when he threw to the score graphic for the famous Essendon v NM 2001 comeback game:
"If you don't wish to know the scores, look away now.... you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway."
The best Comettism ever ?
I'm gonna nominate one that no one ever talks about.
In 1999, after the game where Plugger kicked his 1300th goal, Ch7 crossed to Perth for the double header.
Sheer brilliance with just 6 words.
One of the good guys. Always happy to have a chat to anyone regardless of their standing. A great storyteller as well (particularly about the 1980 Moscow Olympics). Keep fighting the good fight Sandy! 💪
Broadcasting legend Sandy Roberts is facing a major health fight. In an exclusive interview with 7NEWS, the 73-year-old revealed he's been diagnosed with a rare incurable cancer. Now, he's leading a powerful new campaign to save lives.

One of the nicest people in footy

preparing to call another
@TalentLeague
Grand Final, 31 years after his first commentary stint. Tune in as
@Sandy_Dragons
take on the Eastern Ranges on
I think there are great commentators today and will always be in the future. The difference now is the fragmentation of the media with multiple call teams for many sports etc. and greater choice which perhaps means nobody stands out as much or has the same audience as in the past
My column.
Who are the heirs to Rex Mossop, Denis Cometti, Richie Benaud, Norman May, Ray Warren, and Bruce McAvaney?
I rest my case.
The age of iconic commentators is gone.
Great to chat with
@barhamdave
on the 25th anniversary of the release of the '100 Years of Australian Football' documentary which he produced with
@NeilKearney7
Will always remain a timeless doco!
As a player,
@Richmond_FC
Interim Coach Andrew McQualter had a decent record against Port Adelaide:
First AFL goal: vs Power, Round 11 2005
Last AFL goal: vs Power, Round 9 2012
Equal highest match possession tally: 23 vs Power, 2012
Equal highest career average: 16 vs Power
This week marks 50 years since
@VFLPark
opened. I spoke with former
@HawthornFC
President Ian Dicker last year on
@1116sen
about the venue's closure. He said it was proposed that Waverley would become a footy/basketball hub in order to save the ground
Was a pleasure to chat with
@qldcricket
women's star Dr Georgia Redmayne after her side's WNCL
@CricketAus
title. A great role model for young sportspeople
Here's one for you
@rhettrospective
: Anthony Hudson's debut game as a TV footy commentator in 1999 (after a few years on radio). Rex Hunt at the end says "this young bloke might make a career out of it (calling)." Huddo has been on TV every year since.
Enjoyed this footage of the aftermath of the lights going out at
@VFLPark
. Watch for the debate between
@AndyMaherDFA
and Don Scott on crowd behaviour, still a relevant topic today
Kudos to Sir Elton John as his 'Cold Heart' song with
@DUALIPA
reaches number 1 in Australia this week, over 50 years since his first hit. Not many artists have that staying power.
@eltonofficial
Went past the MCG yesterday and saw a father standing in line with his family wearing a 1989 Hawthorn guernsey as his costume. Such a ‘Melbourne’ way to mark the occasion 😂
Will be watching the 2002 Grand Final in preparation for the week ahead.
Would it be considered one of the more underrated Grand Finals of all time?
Great battle in the wet with elements of skill and a tense finish.

From memory, Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn hosted Karmichael Hunt's first VFL game for the Gold Coast Suns against Coburg back in 2010
@anniemaykearney
@RyanEckford
Some names there- Mike Whitney, Ernie Dingo, Dermott Brereton, Bruce, Sandy, Landy and the late Drew Morphett. A young Huddo up the back in front of Dennis Cometti.
@DanielCherny
Was calling a WCE v Geel game at the same time as the famous Essendon v North Melbourne comeback game in 2001 "If you don't want know the scores look away now, you wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway"
A big

Channel 7 1999 easily my favourite, followed by 2001. Most unusual: Optus Vision in 1997/98 when they posted goals/behinds but not the actual score (helped my 6 timetables!)
Running Up That Hill from Kate Bush shoots up to
#2
on the charts due to its airplay on 'Stranger Things'.
Joins 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen and 'A Little Less Conversation' by Elvis as random nostalgic songs finding new success years after release.
