8 weeks ago, 9 graduates of SDC Startup School embarked on a journey to practice all they have learnt under close supervision from me and other industry players
I am inviting you all for thier showcase day, come listen to these individuals present what they have been working on
The first was an online event, and now a physical event in my city.
It was a pleasure sharing the stage with you
@victorfatanmi
of
@FullgapCo
Incredible guy for sure 💯
I was recently featured on
@TechCabal
as one of the Ecosystem Players building the tech and startup ecosystem in Abuja
Here are a couple of things I noted from this feature;
Happy Birthday to me
Happy Birthday
@cynthiaechisom
Thank you for all you do as a Startup Advisor, Mentor and Educator across several incubators and accelerators in Africa giving early stage African startup founders the tools needed to make the world a better place.
🚀🚀🚀🚀
What kind of service or product do you need to launch to reach over 5000 customers and to do over 24 milliion sales?
Well, that’s the company that David Rotimi CEO of
@girdstore
built in less than 2 years with his wife and Business Partner, Adeboro Odunlami
Listen everywhere!
It’s a lot more expensive to raise money for African Startups
It makes a sense to explore other creative sources of funding e.g. customer funding
Your entire business model can’t be based around grants or VC funding. There has to be more roots to profitability.
The reason why we see many fabulous developers today is because of investments of institutions like
@Andela
@Ingressive4Good
@AltSchoolAfrica
I want you to view SDC Startup School as that institution dedicated to developing the founders of tomorrow.
A founder asked me “Cynthia, I have an idea where do I start from, should I go ahead and build the app?”
He is one of many founders who have approached me with this question.
This is what led me to launch SDC Startup School in 2022 which now has 400 graduates and counting.
Founder stories are amazing, inspiring and meaningful.
They show a type of grit, perseverance and tenacity unseen or unheard of
Founders are not ordinary people. They see beyond what the natural eye can perceive.
I count it a huge privilege to be positioned as their guide.
Dear Founder, you need to think differently about what’s in front of you.
Technology is more than just a fancy tool that can help you do fancy things.
For a continent and a nation like ours, technology can literally lift families out of poverty.
I have come to realize that I am not living for myself anymore.
In the past week, I have had conversations with 10 founders, sharing lessons and advice. At the end of it all, I look at God and laugh.
"So, you mean I went through that pain for them? 😅😅"
Life of service. 😅😅
SDC Startup School is leaving a dent in the Startup Ecosystem in Africa.
It changing the way founders build for the continent.
We have got students from South Africa, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Nigeria, UK, US, Dubai, to mention a few
And to think we’ve only just started🥺
Dear Founder, If you are the type who says, "We don't need these founder education programs; founders need to jump into the fire by themselves," please read this.
I hope to one day tell my story of what it feels like to be a female Aboki in a male dominated industry
I spend long hours supervising the repair operations across all our workstations
In case, you didn’t know
I am a full fledged Aboki
Been at this for 10 years now!
Honestly, I wish I took more pictures. Not making the same mistake next week
@sparkafricahq
Even if it means, carrying a personal photographer everywhere I go. 😅
Cos I met amazing peers, supporting founders in the northern startup ecosystem e.g. Fejiro, Musa, Haddiyah etc.
Fa is definitely someone you can’t miss in the room.
Such a warm and kind personality. Doesn’t take glory to himself even though he is worthy of the praise and recognition
Welcome to your best year yet
@victorfatanmi
Happy Birthday 🎊🎉
There is no better way to describe the beauty of all that happened in the room last Friday at the 2nd edition of the Enablers Meetup in Abuja
We had representatives from incubator programs, hubs, Angel networks, investors, corporate organizations and even the government
And it’s a wrap!
After 15+ hours of intense lecture sessions and case studies
Over 18 topics
Average of 63 active students in class
It was a great pleasure teaching and impacting the lives of the future generation of startup founders on the continent.
The time has come for tables to be broken and clarity to be given to as many African entrepreneurs as possible.
Kindly Retweet.
Someone on your TL might need this.
What an eventful year it has been.
I looked back at the year for 2hrs and this is what I saw 🥹
Always count your blessing, name them one by one and it will surprise you the amazing things you have been able to do in such a short time.
It is with great pleasure that I bring this really exciting news; Startup Stories with Cynthia is back with a new season of rich, exciting, inspiring stories.
I had the pleasure on sharing my thoughts on the impact of the growth of the startup ecosystem on the Nigerian youths as well as the contribution required of the government to further fuel this growth.
Still reminiscing over the magic we created last friday at Founders Friday Abuja
Thank you to our partners; Solana Labs, Spark Africa, Ventures Park, and other partners
Big ups to the team that worked so hard to bring this to life.
Hannatu, Lilian, Austin, Ajibike & Chris
After many months of planning and execution, I am thrilled to announce the release of the first batch of launchers into the world! 🚀
To learn more about their startups, visit:
Congratulations to all the launchers! 🚀
You start a company based on a problem to be solved
You also keep the business going based on how many problems you can solve.
Even better if you are doing this with the best people. 🚀
In the end, don’t build something and try to market it instead do the market research upfront and then make the best product that the market needs.
The next question now is “how do I go about this market research right?”
Well that’s the essence of SDC Startup School.
Companies that have existed for 50 years and above did not survive primarily on investor money but on customer revenue.
Investor money should only serve as a support structure to continue earning more customer revenue.
Start thinking customer revenue from Day 1
Had such a great time with 5 Edtech founders building incredible products in the Edtech for the US market.
I had such a great time pointing them in direction of possible growth and breakthroughs in their product.
Thanks
@gener8tor
for having me.
If you are a Founder building for Africa, you need to read this 👇
In my last post I talked about using technology to solve socio-economic problems.
So now, what does this even mean, and who has attempted to use technology to drive this kind of impact?
Some of you may not know this…
I am an Aboki (cobbler - leather artisan that specializes in repairs) - 10 years long
And I spend my days with my team developing and implementing ways improve the income level of my colleagues in the craft who have been neglected for so long.
It is more important to launch a product and iterate than to take so much time trying to perfect the first version.
If you do the latter, you will end up launching the product too late.
Yesterday was a blast 🎉
I had the pleasure of building bonds and relationships with my fellow ecosystem enablers in the startup community.
We had representations from Central Bank of Nigeria , The Ventures Park 💛🚀, VERITAS UNIVERSITY ABUJA, Global Entrepreneurship Network…
The Aboki will succeed.
Because we won’t stop. Investor money or not, immediate traction or not, YC or not… we won’t stop improving, learning new things, tearing things down, rebuilding structures, unlearning the redundant and exploring new angles.

Dear Founder, if you are still wondering why PMF is important.
You will see from this chart that it’s a life or death situation.
Figure it now or die 💀
Students of SDC Startup School
You just got a mail.
Great news in there 🚀🚀
By the way, here are some interesting facts about the students of SDC Startup School.
There very few people in a lifetime that you can deeply with in one swoop.
@napsylalala
is one of them.
Napa shared some really amazing insight to the entrepreneurs at the Tech & Entrepreneurship Summit in Enugu.
We both had a blast as you can tell from this image.
What if The VC model is not all that?
What if the VC model only corrupts the DNA of a business, leaving founders with the wrong mindset towards building?
What if the VC funding model isn’t right for the future of African Startup Ecosystem?
Just what if?
If you are in Africa and you want to be a founder some day. You need to enroll into SDC Startup School.
Yes it is free to enroll. However, you pay with your time and dedication.

All here:
I have waited so long to release this article. I am pleased to have finally done it.
This topic is so dear to me, because I have seen it’s negative effects littered all over the ecosystem. Touching every area from advisors to founders to investors to operators to enablers etc.
Instead of fighting a price war with your competitors, try fighting a value war with them.
This is really good especially if you are just starting out in an overcrowded industry.
Let the best customer centric company win.
I have discovered that growth at all cost is different from profitable growth
Growth at all cost focuses on growing just the revenue by every means possible
Profitable growth looks at both the revenue growth as well as expanding the margins.
The latter is better.
Merry Christmas 🎄
Try and have fun in the best way possible.
Let no one guilt trip you or oppress you 😂🤣.
This is the season to be jolly. Find your own way to enjoy this period. 🎄😇😇
You guys should give
@victoronyekere

From just an idea to planning to partnerships to collaboration 🚀
Also, how do you get 65+ people to stay with you from 7pm to 10pm
Well done
@victoronyekere
Hats Off 🚀🔥
This was such a huge success.
There are three things I will be remembered for on this earth and beyond.
The impact I had on the;
1. Leather Industry
2. African Startup Ecosystem
3. The spread of the Gospel of Jesus to all the nations of the world.
Selah.

I know Startup Advisors keep saying “focus on the problem” “focus on the problem”
And that’s because there is a great consequence for not doing so.
Let me give you a practical reason why you should focus on the problem and not otherwise

There is so much power in collaboration.
SDC Startup School has given birth to great co-founder relationships, friendships and marriage soon enough 😅😅

Founder spoke to 300-400 investors and only 8 invested in him. Even with his MIT & Techstars background, it took him 6 months
Calendly spoke to about 100 investors & none said yes.
For every tech cabal news you see, understand that it took a lot of work.
What a way to round up Season 3
In today’s episode, I had with me
@victoronyekere
He has consulted for diverse organizations via workforce transformation and interacted with over 3000 African entrepreneurs through Coaching, Consulting and Strategy.
I shared this insightful LinkedIn post to the graduates of SDC Startup School.
It’s a post that highlights some of the successful companies today that came out of a pivot.
Here are some of the companies that he mentioned:
🪡: a thread
Investors always look at how big a market is before releasing funds to founders.
But a much more critical question they often ask growth is how much can this startup capture within the next 5-10 years of growth?
a thread…
To help find PMF, you need to constrain your burn as much as possible, code as less as possible, and talk to customers as much as possible.
SDC Startup School provides effective guidance on how to achieve this.

We need new names on the startup success scene
We can do this by fueling the beginning of the pipeline. How can we kickstart the journey of at-least 2000 new founders every month?
Release well equipped founders into the ecosystem on a shorter timeline.
This is my 2024 focus.
Build businesses that helps other people grow their income.
Move from Financial Inclusion to Economic Inclusion.
Yes, give them an account number. But is importantly, help them grow the money in that account.
- paraphrased from a conversation with
@iaboyeji
Primary School education is the foundation for the success of any student
What, then, is the primary education for founders that can aid them on the rest of their startup journey?
Is it one thing, or is it a combination of many things?
