A big reason so many Americans miss college is because it's the only time they've ever lived in a walkable community. That doesn't have to be the case. At Culdesac, we're showing that building walkable neighborhoods is possible in the U.S. again.

We positioned these buildings to decrease the temperature of the walkway, shielding it from direct sun. Imagine how much cooler it will get once we bring in some vegetation!

In less than 100 years, weโ€™ve come to accept (frequently empty) parking lots as ubiquitous. Here's how we can make better use of public and shared space- building neighborhoods instead of a sprawling parking lot. A thread ๐Ÿงต

It's illegal to build walkable neighborhoods in the U.S. Challenging these barriers allows us to build housing with courtyards, plazas, and other third spacesโ€”moving beyond the suburban or high-rise binary to create truly walkable places.

Why pavers? Pavers allow rain to soak back into the ground, cooling the area as the water evaporates. They prevent water pooling, helping keep the ground walkable all year round. Additionally, they reduce the urban heat island effect by reflecting heat instead of absorbing it.

The U.S. might not be walkable now, but it can be!. By building a broader range of housingโ€”with courtyards, plazas, and other third spacesโ€”we can move beyond the suburban or high-rise binary and create truly walkable, community-focused neighborhoods.

Why is it illegal to build like this in most of the U.S.?. Parking requirements and other zoning laws make it extremely difficult to build walkable housing. People-first communities like Culdesac should be the norm not the exception.

Here's why we don't have Palm Trees at Culdesac Tempe:. 1) Palm trees use significant amounts of water โ€“ not ideal for Phoenix. 2) Palm trees do not provide the shade cover essential to reducing heat. Instead, we use desert-adapted plants like Palo Verde trees.

Well-planned cities can actually help protect rural areas. By building denser cities with great transit, we can keep urban growth concentrated, preventing sprawl that converts important agricultural and rural lands.

In 2005, this urban freeway in Seoul, South Korea was turned into a park. Called the Cheonggyecheon, it has become one of the most popular parks in the city. Temperatures by the river can be up to 3 degrees cooler, and traffic has actually improved. Cities for people, not cars.
