THREAD: Oleksii Marazov, 45, and his family woke up Saturday morning to the news they had lost their apartment in a missile strike. They live in a recently-built high rise in downtown Kyiv. They survived because they had spent Friday night in a bomb shelter at his sons’ school.

When we spoke, Oleksii’s family was in the corridor getting some daylight and information. He introduced me to his sons, Yurii, 12, and Mykola, 8. This is their school. Right now, they live in its basement.

That’s Oleksii’s daughter Kateryna, 20, on the left, and wife Mariia, 44, in the middle, surrounded by their sons. Each family has a cubby to put their things. They brought food, books and toys from home, but the kids mostly just want to sit close to mom and dad now, he says.

Oleksii found out his family's 22nd floor apartment had been hit from the building's group text chat, where neighbors were sharing photos and videos of the damage. He worked out that the bedroom his sons shared has been destroyed, the floor completely caving in.

Oleksii's neighbors were in the building when the missile hit, but survived by sheltering in the kitchen. The family texted the group chat minutes later to say they were safe. Signal is poor in the bomb shelter, but Oleksii can get some information if he steps into the corridor.
