great, now we have a professor of English linguistics who thinks that English is a "hybrid [language] derived from other hybrids" and could not have possibly started within "a specific group or groups of people" is this an English-speaking academia problem? what's going on there
People are, for some reason, apparently dunking on Wengrow for not understanding historical linguistics. But what he's saying is straightforwardly correct. I would say almost trivially so.

when did Latin end? when did it begin? can you find Latin genetically?
@wondrfulrainbow @davidwengrow PIE was not a language, it was not spoken . Even if one believes it was, there are no temporal parametres for this non-language (when did PIE end? When did it begin?). We can't excavate it. We can't find it genetically. There are no genetic or archaeological markers for it.
