Since more knowledge is better than less knowledge, let's include the basics of British colonial history in those lessons & an understanding of the British flag's history including its meaning to the colonised & its abuse/misuse by racists since the days of the National Front.
Two thirds of people under the age of 40 don’t even know what the Battle of Britain is. It’s the result of allowing our history, heroes, flags, and culture to be sneered at and neglected. Enough. We are a great country and should always be proud of our history.

This book launch is recommended. SuAndi is an important poet and one of the most original I know, described as having an "over the garden fence" style she has real presence & can hold an audience @sussedblackwoma

Want to know more about debates in the National Trust. Have a listen to historian @corinne_fowler talk about the disputes and why the populist right don’t much like history in her interview on the Labour Left Podcast. 2/2 https://t.co/aF111ddBZa

What the "muh both sides" and "muh cancel culture" and "I thought you supported free speech" commenters are getting wrong: Violence that's not a response to a violent attack or a direct immanent threat of violence is unprovoked violence. Modern civilization has drawn a stark

3. A tiny section of our report mentions interviewees' comments that - in the absence of halal & kosher food - better vegetarian options would be welcome in well-visited rural areas. The below became the headline (subsequently parroted by other journalists). The tactic: ridicule

2. The project's 3rd report - based a study of online racism - shows evidence of rural racism is routinely dismissed & denied. See The Rural Racism Project: Towards an Inclusive Countryside | The Centre for Hate Studies | University of Leicester

1 of 3. Rural Racism report contradicts: 1. That barriers to the countryside are only 'perceived' (i.e. imagined). Evidence shows these are real (practical *&* experiential) 2. Interviewees of colour universally expressed deep love for the natural world. That's not the issue.
@alexander_hunt @corinne_fowler Alex, I’ve been writing about exactly that for years

You forgot to mention a. 230,000 word analysis of hate speech online b. Time to travel and walk all day with interviewees, time for analysis, time to build trust and network. Questioning methodology and expertise (see report 3, written before your tweet) is very common
@CA_TimB @corinne_fowler Rural Racism report (2023-2025) = 2 years = 730 days, 115 interviews, shared between 3 authors = 38.3 interviews per author over 2 years, ie average roughly one interview per 19 days per author. Quality, depth and length of each interview not clear, but seems not many. 👩🌾👩🎓☀️

Another series of brief responses to you @CA_TimB. There is a small chain by me below my own rely here
@CA_TimB I know you wouldn't don't want this to happen to anyone. This a.m. I got an email from someone who told me her new neighbours are harassing her (more detail would expose her) & she can't report it because she fears reprisal. Stats do matter but don't tell the whole story.

1. Yup. With the BBC and Independent excepted, the "coverage" of this report has failed spectacularly to take this robust & important research seriously. Rather than read or discuss the evidence properly everything has been done to undermine the report & deny there's an issue. On
Look how these headlines single out halal food, despite the Uni of Leicester's report also mentioning the need for more kosher food in the countryside. It's also worth noting that the report, which is almost 250pgs, dedicates no more than 2 paragraphs to halal/kosher foods...

Meanwhile we're receiving emails from people who tell about racism & thank us for our report, asking us to keep shedding a light on the issue @CA_TimB. Again & again the issue of anonymity has been raised. Reporting it exposes people, as anonymity is impossible in small places

A handful of the surge of social media comments my colleague Prof Neil Chakraborti is receiving for producing the report on rural racism. As a white co-author of the report, none of this has been directed to me.

Rural racism is often unreported and has a profound impact on victims, says new report.
