I deeply inconvenienced this woman by asked her to move her dog off the table so I could use it for my laptop. Turns out she and the bloke across the way are a couple and are going to great pains to occupy all eight seats and both tables. You have to admire the selfishness.

On first impressions, it doesn't seem too too bad. Inside's overdue a clean, a fair bit of trim is broken and I am viewing a dark car at night so I'll reserve judgement until I get it home, but man it makes a good noise when I fires up. It'll all be grand... 🙏

Almost home. Running brilliantly but a few bits and pieces need some work. And the bodywork needs a tidy up, which is actually quite assuring. It has worn its 20 years and 90k miles really well.

I still regret selling this. Bought in '17 for £245 with a short MOT and a driver's seat mounting point that needed welding. Needed no mech work (just a service), but I got it welded, repainted, valeted, rebooted, MOTd and sold it to an Italian enthusiast who still has it today.

Don't normally accost people mid-commute but couldn't ignore this. Stiffer springs and fruitier Wizard exhaust, ootherwise stock and pristine, down to the OEM stereo. Chap reckons only 193 GTAs left globally! My first performance press car too back in the day. Lots of ❤ for this

Work still to do (new reg plates, new side stripes, spruce up ST badges, A/C recharge, add audio upgrades) but here are the finished wheels and newly-snazzed red calipers. It's really close to being "finished" now and I'm chuffed with how it's driving. More on that tomorrow...

Next in my series on buying shonky cars to beat the January blues, paid £225 for this in '17. Wanted one badly as a teen and the itch never let up. Not fast but so fun. Spruced it up and sold it for £1450 to a keen Italian who proudly displayed it amongst Ferraris at car shows 😉

Sorry it's a bit dirty, I've not stopped driving it long enough to clean it. Here it be: an 07 R56 Cooper S with, I think, Chilli Pack, upgraded alloys and painted bodykit. (Frankly I'd have rather those in black.) Anywho, 60k miles, reasonable nick and decent money at £2,250!

Rummaging through my old phone photos and I came across this. The Mk3 MR2 isn't just a nice thing to drive, it's a dream for the amateur mechanic - a basic tool kit will do most things you need and every panel is bolt-on. Here I'm replacing the roof and scored rear wing.

Quoted £175 to get this wheelarch painted - and that's without filling in the gouges! So today I'm going to attempt a DIY fix following YouTube how-tos. Costs? Salvage wheelarch trim £17, paint £24 and sandpaper £10. If it doesn't work out, car remains untouched. Wish me luck!

Hard to believe this rolled off a truck exactly two years ago today - these are the pics from that day. Since coming back to life it has been utterly reliable, huge fun to drive, cheap to run and a proper head-turner. Learned a lot and met lots of fab people thanks to it too. 💖

After about 15 mins, it's time to go home. The car has survived and I've been commentating non-stop, which is why things are a tad waffly and not exactly at full volume. But it is the Elan's triumphant return to the driveway from whence it was reborn, so I had to share. FIN

Back 2018 I bought this 206 GTi on eBay for £225. It had an MOT but it was a mess - it leaked water, it was filthy and a lot of stuff didn't work. I sank £1,200 and a lot of effort into what ended up a very sweet little car. Five years and 20k miles later, it's back on eBay!

All bar the Golf are abandoned MOT failures. People have literally told the MOT centre: "I ain't coming for it." Madness. The hardtop on the MG is £300 all day long.

To round out my Jan shitbox series, this comes to you from...1999! A TV producer terrorised Ireland in it for 14 mths and 24k before I bought it to replace my Mk2 Golf GTI 8v. Words fail to describe how bananas good this car was. Sadly, a move to the US in '03 forced its sale 💔.

Special car, this. Belonged to one of the founders of Colt Cars, David Blackburn. No show pony, it’s got the patina of a car that was enjoyed... much of it in my home town of Cork 👍🏼 His son is driving it today - wonder if he’d miss those GTI-16V badges? I’ve got a home for them!

I did a thing this evening. Turns out CV boots aren't so bad when you've got the right tools. Took about an hour per side - not too bad! One boot had split so it's for the best I changed them anyway. It's just fascinating how cars are put together - this was fun!

This is also a January purchase, although not my £ and with an unhappy ending. With the Mitsubishi heritage fleet doing good PR business, I got the OK to buy this unicorn, one of 40 or so imported by Colt Cars back in 99 and sold "officially" through Ralliart. This car was... 1/3

So... the bodywork and wheels have been spruced up which means IT. IS. FINISHED. All in it stands me about £1,700, although a good £700 of that was just me being me - 17in wheels (original 16s were fine), proper Yoko tyres, fancy DAB radio, private reg, maintenance overkill, etc.

When all this kicked off I realised my precious garage wasn't going happen any time soon, so I turned my shonky shed into a mini man-cave. Every night I come out here to tinker and decompress from a full-on work day and home-schooling three kids. It's not fancy, but it is bliss.
