Possibly the most poorly aged popular notion in my lifetime is "They're just silly college kids you should ignore. None of this nonsense will ever take hold in the real world".
@MichLKosinski
Ben Rhodes: “We created an echo chamber. They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. They literally know nothing.”
@nytimes
Chief Seattle owned dozens of slaves. Nearly every Native American tribe lived on land that at some point previously they *stole* from other tribes, and they regularly fought territorial wars.
One of the greatest accomplishments in human history was ending this eternal cycle.
@nytimes
Whenever Chief Washakie's leadership was questioned by a member of his tribe, he would disappear for a few days and come back with the scalps of other tribes.
History is brutal. Historical context is important. What's important is remembering how and why this no longer happens.
@WilliamBoone93
@Salon
And we have made more progress than basically any other civilization in history. None of America's sins are historically unique or exceptional, but the progress and prosperity is.
It's insane how many "activist" conservative rulings are literally just "Congress should pass a law. This isn't our job." It is the exact opposite of an activist court.
@therecount
Passenger cars contribute almost nothing to road deterioration and maintenance. When we run calculations for road pavement design, we don't even take them into account; only trucks.

@officerfrenly
Why? What is the geographic limit to when it's different, or is it just skin color? If the Inca somehow managed to conquer the Iroquois, why is that different than the British, who actually lived closer to the Iroquois?

I'm pretty sure my dad fully pushed me off the high dive at the lake as a kid by this age when I was crying. I then proceeded to jump off 100X times because it was awesome.
@kylegriffin1
But is his accusation true? Shouldn't that matter? And a non-politician businessman in the 90s doing this is very different than the son of a sitting Vice President doing this.
@GStephanopoulos
Reminder that George Stephanopoulos was Bill Clinton's campaign director and WH communications director who obstructed a federal investigation.
This is like Kelly Anne Conway interviewing a Republican.

Creationists have done less harm to science than the politicians who just say "trust science" over and over again while doing things that are not in fact supported by science.

Ben Rhodes: “We created an echo chamber. They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. They literally know nothing.”
@Shuten_Koji
No, but at some point we need to break the cycle of violence, which we obviously have. The Lakota were one of the most warmongering nations in America. Why should they get claim to any territory they conquered then lost to the USA?
@nytimes
Sacagawea was kidnapped by a rival tribe when they ambushed her tribe and slaughtered villagers, and was sold into marriage at the age of 13, as was common for tribes at the time.
This doesn't mean they were any more savage than the Europeans. All humans are the same.
@nytimes
This opposite version of American/white exceptionalism, in which white people are uniquely bad, is as historically revisionist and dangerous as the regular kind, and this racial essentialist collective blame is a dangerous road for any multi-ethnic society to go down.
@AndrewYang
100%. It's one of the greatest crises of our time, and it gets dismissed by people saying "So what? Boys had their time. The future is female.", which is every bit as vile and dangerous as the people saying girls shouldn't be doctors 50 years ago.
Activists lie. All activists. They exaggerate, use hyperbole, & make up statistics: both "good" & "bad" causes. Never accept anything from any "activist" w/out double checking, especially for causes you support. Their entire existence relies on problems being worse than you think
Seriously, imagine getting mad at the person who literally carried you in their womb for 9 months for thinking that you were a human being while in there.

I actually checked. She's 47! That means she graduated college during Bill Clinton's first term. How is such a take even possible?
@marwilliamson
11 people were shot during the looting. None of them by cops. That's actually more people shot than the number of people shot by cops in Philadelphia in an entire year.
@washingtonpost
The only shots fired at the Capitol riot were by police officers, and they killed an unarmed white woman.
You all have the same exact takes on everything.

It was fascinating watching how many politicians and celebrities and pundits accidentally claim Blake died, but nothing was as funny as all the people who though the people Kyle Rittenhouse killed were black when talking about.
Egypt today is an entirely different (and mostly Arab) civilization with almost no direct ties or similarities to the Ancient Egyptians, whose language would still be unknown without Europeans. Most tombs and structures had been looted and destroyed before British set foot there.
@Shuten_Koji
Have you ever read anything about the warfare of the pre-European-contact Plains Indians, and other groups? In the PNW, Chief Seattle owned numerous slaves and committed a literal genocide, slaughtering every man, woman, and child of another tribe.
Weird how we keep getting think pieces about the "radicalization of young men" when their political leanings have remained consistent, but nobody is allowed to talk about the political radicalization of young women.

It's amazing how often professional journalists whose entire job is to write words and report on reality fail to spend 5 seconds on Google to get basic facts right and see if words they use are real or not.
The last time one country straight up tried to conquer a neighbor was when Saddam invaded Kuwait, and in case you forgot, the US instantly came to their defense with a robust military campaign and fought the invaders back. Notably, Kuwait is not full of white people.
Every white kid in the 90s watched Family Matters and Fresh Prince and Sister Sister, among other "Black" shows. None of these avoided uncomfortable conversations about racism. Yes, they were cheesy, but they were optimistic and inspirational, not cynical and insulting.
@RepPressley
Fun fact: the first use of the filibuster to block a federal judge was by Democrats to block Miguel Estrada because he was Hispanic. Joe Biden played a major role in it.

It is a clean, stand-alone bill. What the hell is wrong with these people. This isn't a time for another omnibus generic spending bill. This isn't just an ordinary recession. It is an unprecedented planet-wide shut down of economic activity.

Russia successfully pulled off a staggering mass evacuation of a city at Chernobyl, a feat unrivaled by the rest of the world.
Thread: Video of the 1868 was monument obelisk toppling over in the Santa Fe plaza this afternoon. A small business owner described mobs of people banging a drum, burning things and chanting loud. The only thing missing he said was police.
@TheDailyShow
He created a secret government kill list with which he could assassinate US citizens without due process or a fair trial. Even Bush and Cheney refused to go that far. He was a terrible, dangerous president who got away with literal murder because he gave good speeches.
Never forget the time that every single institution in America spread an obviously implausible statistic invented by a 9 year old and it resulted in government policy changes.

This is like shutting down efforts to monitor Nazis and banning criticism of Germany in 1937 because of fears of anti-German bias in America.

Stigma against irresponsible behavior is not stigma against gay people. There *should* be stigma against irresponsible behavior, especially from within the gay community, and that would lead to less stigma against gay people in general.
@thehill
This deserves like a month in prison tops. I'm gay myself. This is absolutely absurd. Anybody who thinks this sentence is warranted is a vindictive totalitarian and opponent to criminal justice reform.

This is an actual quote from the head of the LA Teacher's Union:
"It’s OK that our babies may not have learned all their times tables. They learned resilience....They know the difference between a riot and a protest. They know the words insurrection and coup.”

I still love Snopes hilarious "fact check" that just made a bunch of excuses for why Samantha Bee and her husband opposed integrating her kids' wealthy white and Asian school with a school full of poorer minorities.

I 100% seriously think Trump and Biden should play a round of golf for charity. Make it mini golf, even!
They need to hold some sort of event together that *isn't* a political event.
It is basically the only way to calm things down right now.

There are so many incidents of clear cut and unquestionable police violence. Why use this controversial incident whose main narrative turned out to be a lie?
