Wildlife artist and mostly patch watcher around Torbay - Berry Hd, Clennon Valley and beaches. Guide, walks, tours and 1:1 or small groups in South Devon
On a walk from home today, lucky enough to see a reasonably close pod of Common Dolphins in Torbay. I took some photos of a very active youngster and parent only to see a Lamprey (Sea?) attached to the calf - find it difficult to believe a lamprey could catch a Dolphin!
Perseverance pays off 20 years of feeding the Cirl Buntings at Broadsands
#Torbay
and always checking the Reed Buntings every time. On a bright sunny spring morning ‘Boom’ the long awaited and hope for Little Bunting, a new self found for me, and a cracking bird too!
I have deleted the post regarding the cuckoo photographers - I had an gracious email today from one of them apologising, saying they should have known better and will not be doing it again.
This doesn't happen very often, I take my hat off to the photographer who isn't on Twitter
Selfishness rules with this Dorset photographer any wonder the little bunting at Broadsands was wary and wouldn’t show or feed. If you see this sort of behaviour tell them. If they don’t move go and stand right next to them until they move back giving the birds space to feed.
I don’t twitch much anymore - preferring to keeping it local - but given a second chance on the Isabelline Wheatear after it had ‘gone’ I couldn’t resist. New Year’s resolutions include daily BirdTrack records and using my notebook more than a camera so far so good!!
Hume’s Warbler -Clennon Lakes
#Torbay
First for site and probably long overdue with the site attracting so many Yellow-browed Warblers over the years. Calling well from time to time such a distinctive Chee-wee very un Y-Warbler like.
The Red-breasted Flycatcher at
#BerryHead
this morning - great little birds the 4th I’ve found at the site but that’s over 45 years - so not a regular bird there! At least this one lingered for people to see.
Just had a call from local photographer Tony Green asking if this might be a Long-tailed Skua that flew over
#ClennonLakes
yesterday morning at 10am- hell yes! What a corker and a new site record
On Today's exercise walk in woodland I encountered nearly twice as many firecrest as I did goldcrest! I had never noticed previously when in full display the crest on the male is not only raised but also spread widely too, giving it a little devil look!
This is why we ask Devon birders not to post on social media or county sightings pages Peregrine sightings at given sites. Still many people continue to do it. You are handing Peregrines on a plate to those intent on harming these beautiful birds.
The sorry sight of 2 of 4 Peregrines deliberately poisoned using racing pigeons bated with lethal chemicals. 3 from Guernsey & 1 from Herm island. The REWARD for information leading to a successful prosecution now stands at £10,500. Tel Sue on 07781 150388 if you are able to help
As expected Blue-fin Tuna targeting Garfish see close up. some brilliant views but very difficult to photograph best shots 'fired from the hip' without looking through camera. Why do people need to catch these amazing creatures.. Just watch and enjoy.
While guiding today a very out of context 'pwing' call grabbed my attention
#BerryHead
the second time it clicked Bearded Tit! This is what having a local patch is all about, not the rarest bird - but in context to the site, I've seen more Fea's type petrels & Radde's Warblers!
Two of the 4 juvenile Yellowlegged Gulls at
#Broadsands
beach this evening and some notes for those struggling to pick them out from juvenile Herring Gulls at the moment.
The stunning almost unbelievable plumage of a summer plumaged Great Northern Diver is hard to beat - even better when its on your your 'back door step'! Nice to have a few younger birds around too. 4 on the sea in Torbay another 2 flew past
#BerryHead
Finished the two murals at Noah's Hide
#ShapwickHeath
today. Met lots of lovely birders, staff and volunteers in the 9 days in the Hide and of course some great birds and wildlife too!
Something I hadn't picked up before on the underwing primaries of juvenile Long-tailed Skua is this notch it seems to be consistent on the vast majority of photos I've studied and not shown by the other two (although I found one Arctic where it might be the case. Any thoughts...
Cirl Bunting feeding station at
#Broadsands
car park up and running again this winter at least 8 today including this male. Many thanks again to the south west RSPB for the seed - last year it was essential to keep the population healthy during the beast from the east.
After searching the
#Torbay
beaches this evening for Yellow-legged Gulls, a last ditch stop at Goodrington at dusk produced this huge juvenile Caspian Gull. A pleasure to share the briefish views with Pete Dennis before the gull flew showing off silky white underwing coverts.
From Devon Sea Safaris: 30 odd Great Shearwaters this afternoon just after the rain. 2-5 miles East of berry head. I’ve never seen so many just the odd 1 a year and in the distance. Today they were posing for the camera. Managed some decent photos.
Wonderful Birding in Somerset yesterday after dropping Tanya and her friends off at Millfield for a swim competition. Greylake: Biakal & Green-w Teal, Cranes etc. Shapwick, 100+ Cattle, 7 Great White Egrets, 4 Glossy Ibis, 2 Whooper Swans, 4 Ring-necked Ducks, Bittern and Otter!
White wagtail and Pied Wagtail @ Soar Mill Cove
#SDevon
today - in autumn a young female pied (yarrellii) can be confusing but look how neat and clean the White Wagtail (alba) is, the rump if you can see it is nearly always a good clincher too, grey in whitwe and blackish in pied
Thanks to
@SeaSkywatch
caught up with the Desert Wheatear
#BerryHead
in the sunshine on top of headland for 10 mins by myself! Located it down in the quarry after it went missing.
Opinions welcome on this putative Pacific Diver. When I found my concerns were on size of bird to GND and bill size but the lack of flank patch is the very best feature for Pacific - so do you rely on one feature?
An amazing morning at
#Berryhead
starting with a over 8400 Redwing overhead, 150 Fieldfare, 230 Chaffinch, 16 Brambling, 29 Siskin then 4 Firecrest, 18 Goldcrest, 5 Chiffchaff and polished off with a Pallas's Warbler!
great to see this unusual leucistic juvenile Mediterranean Gull on
#Broadsands
beach
#Torbay
today looks to be the same gull seen at Dawlish Warren yesterday..
The Ring Ouzel
#BerryHead
showed well today having a good preen after a down pour this morning. Still 40+ Goldcrests around the woods and 2 Firecrests. Overhead there were 3 Brambling, 22 Chaffinches, 1 Redwing, 7 Siskin, 5 Bullfinch and little else of interest.
Sketches of today's Drake Surf Scoter
#Broadsands
the bird seemed to lack white on the forehead and had a slightly darker nail to the bill so perhaps a 2w rather than full adult?
Some truly awful photos from video of the second Great Shearwater
#BerryHead
this morning - unfortunately already moving out by the time I got the camera out, also being harassed by a Bonxie..
Very impressed with the Nikon Coolpix 900, it camera coped very well in the sunlight with the
#Broadsands
Buntings this morning. Total of 28 Cirl Buntings and 5 Yellowhammers on seed in the 2nd car park this morning. Photos facing left Cirls, facing right Yellowhammers.
I asked for pictures from my guided cruise on
@KellysheroDavid
- I was too busy describing and locating birds to take pictures..
@billcoulson3
sent me this picture of the ‘Cory’s’ - looks like it was a Scopoli’s! If it gets accepted it’s a first for Devon!!
Amazingly 20 years ago today the late great John Fortey found this Broad-billed Sanspiper at
#DawlishWarren
. It was distant on the day but I returned a few days later to be treated with some great views as it roosted on the beach.
What a day - late to post as I dashed down to Start Point hoping a Corys might drift by - none did! Any way my field sketches of this mornings
#BerryHead
Fea's/ Desertas Petrel and a little composite sketch of it as it flew in toward us - fantastic views!
Keeping up with more notes this year a Red-necked Grebe off
#Broadsands
today also present the Black-n Grebe, 5 Great C Grebes, 1 Long-t Duck, 12+ C Scoter and 4 Great N Divers
A bonus bird found on the
@naturetrektours
day tour of Man Sands and Dart estuary cruise today was this lovely adult Night Heron at Man Sands South Devon. Flew in and perched for several minutes at the top of a willow!
A few photos of the Red-breasted Flycatcher at Berry Head this morning - still love the descriptive term 'RB flicker' that tail really does flick to an outrageous height sometimes!
Avocet is a rare bird in
#Torbay
- only my 4th in 40 years Birding the bay. Typically this one didn't hang around and never did come in to the busy beaches. It took off gained height and flew off toward the Dart.
Some more female Cirls and Yellowhammer both duller individuals and brighter birds.
#Broadsands
this winter has been a great place to see both together.
Belted Kingfisher, Pied-billed Grebe, Lesser Scaups, Ring-necked ducks, and Green-winged Teal today are all scarce on Tobago but the Northern Pintail and Little Egret were rarer! Brown Boobies and Royal Terns too but these sketched Magnificent Frigatebirds were my favourite!
A good few days birding around
#Torbay
finding. 1w Black Guillemot, probably a new Slavonian Grebe as it flew in and flew off almost as quick! Then after no Yellow-browed warblers at Berry Head all autumn discovered one at Broadsands while feeding the Cirl Buntings.
A new arrival of a Yellow-browed Warbler and 3 Siberian Chiffchaffs (been here for over a week) around
#ClennonLakes
today. Such a poor year for YBW in SW, I honestly thought this might be the first year in decades I wouldn't find one!
Sadly the only useful photos of a pale, slimline shearwater in a mixed group of Shearwaters on my Lyme Bay cruise on 23 Aug. We were all concentrating on the main group of Balearics and Manx to the right of the flock. One place left on my Lyme pelagic cruise on 22 Sept
The Mansands Blue-winged Teal
#Devon
proved a bit elusive at times but showed well - staying by itself most of the time on the lower marsh. Stick to the main footpaths if going for the bird and only park in the car parks the top barns are a working farm.
First 3 days painting a mural in Noah's Hide
#ShapwickHeath
and some great birds all found by birders visiting the Hide, I dropped my brushes to see them... Purple Heron, Bitterns, GWE's, Marsh Harriers, Hobby
A new Torbay bird for me and I think every other Torbay birder - a Dipper at Cockington Water Meadow. thank to
@StephMurphy
for finding it and putting the news out quickly and
@markrabailey
for the call.
Great to be out with just
@SeaSkywatch
&
@billmacbirding
#BerryHead
always great company - surprising no one else saw the prospect for the day. 30 plus Great Shearwaters in a morning in Devon is phenomenal - but in October wow!! No Great skuas though, my how times change..
Some pictures from Rob Hughes
@Devonseasafari
after my call from
#BerryHead
to him - lovely photos of Great Shearwaters - hundreds were passing - a Cory’s, Sooty and Manx to follow from him
Good 4hr cruise out of Brixham on
@KellysheroDavid
estimated 350+ Great Shearwaters - the most common shearwater currently in Lyme bay! 4 Sooty, 6 Manx, 95 Balearic Shearwaters, 2 Fulmar, 16 Arctic, 1 Pomarine & 1 Grt Skua, plus Tuna, Com Dolphin, Porpoises Grey Seals No Booby!
Took the wrong camera in my dash out of the house - but just been going through the photos of todays
#BerryHead
Desert Wheatear. Similar shots in sunlight and shade.
Looks like later video confirms it's a BTD but here's a bit of my video this morning.. not showing white on flanks at all - but from the start the bill size and overall bird structure had me a bit worried.
Sweep of the
#Torbay
beaches this morning - highlights: 51 Mediterranean Gulls and 1 juv Yellow-legged Gull already 8 recently fledged juvenile Herring Gulls (all with dark legs currently). Photos Yellow-legged juv and group of Med Gulls
Seawatching
#BerryHead
0505- 0905hrs: 177 Balearic & 324 Manx Shearwaters and this very pale Shearwater at 0820 perhaps the Dawlish Warren bird considered by us to be pale Balearic Shear certainly the palest the rest of the BH watchers had seen.
My next talk is to the U3A Okehampton group tomorrow at the Ockment Centre starting at 2.30pm - 'Whats that bird?' an interactive, fun talk on bird identification.
The April
#BBCWildlife
magazine features a series of my illustrations of different bird species building their nests. Here’s the Long-tailed Tit sequence
A plot of land seeded and grown as mitigation for Cirl Buntings for building development in
#Brixham
#Berryhead
has attracted 50+ yellowhammers, at least 11 Cirl Buntings this winter - absolutely fantastic, more Buntings in this area than I've seen in more that 40 years!
Excellent stuff. More proof, if it were needed, that wildlife-friendly farming is possible. Plenty of enlightened farmers out there already, but we need more - much more - of this kind of thing, especially from larger agribusinesses.
No Room for Wildlife
@Torbay_Council
- looks like a condemnation of public consultation of development has been overridden by council. Fields at Broadsands were in the proposal for possibly development. Very important for Cirl Buntings, showing lack knowledge of our council.
Nice close Red-throated Diver off
#Paignton
Beach this morning also 2 Black-necked Grebes toward Preston, 2 Grt Nrthn Divers in Torbay and 4 Shoveler on the sea
Getting ready to support (I'm not swimming it!) my daughter Becky swim - 6 miles around Torbay beaches from Brixham to Torquay today starting at 9am and finishing - she hopes at 1pm in aid of Cancer research:
