The shameful behaviour of some TERF activists at
#LondonPride
is not in my name. I’m a cis lesbian. Trans women are women. Trans women don’t share all my experiences and i don’t share all theirs but we have much in common and my feminism includes all women.
even ignoring the politics, this is sublime

The first Black professional actor on a British stage whose name we know was a Black woman, Rachael Baptiste, who played Juliet in the eighteenth century. All power to
@JamieLloydCo
and their leading lady, Francesca Amewaduh-Rivers. She joins a proud, long tradition.
I would like to found THE BANSHEE, a journal of screaming women, by screaming women, for screaming women. The leading magazine for women who scream. We have magazines for witches, where are our supernatural yellers.
are you getting Christmas cards or other stamped post? Please don't throw the stamps away, charities recycle them! Here's a thread of charities which want your stamps. it's also a lovely way to donate to charity for free/extremely cheap in this financially dreadful year: (thread)
So, I THINK the rule is: 1. Don't go out alone 2. Being frightened to go out alone isn't reasonable 3. Assume all strange men are attackers 4. But don't assume that because it's offensive 5. But don't go out 6. But don't talk about not going out. 7. Smile more?
Readers of Twitter, have you ever read or encountered Joan Lingard's "Kevin and Sadie"/Across The Barricades series? If so, when/where and how old were you? Grateful for RTs. Thank you!
I would like to go to a museum gift shop. A very posh and luxurious gift shop of a large museum and then a very small weird gift shop of a completely mad museum.
I would like to found THE BANSHEE, a journal of screaming women, by screaming women, for screaming women. The leading magazine for women who scream. We have magazines for witches, where are our supernatural yellers.
Trans people, activists or not, are my queer family! This is such bullshit. These women are supposedly protecting me as a cis lesbian but I don’t want or need saving from my friends.
I hope
@PrideInLondon
doesn’t tolerate their transphobia. I am passionately against lesbian erasure and I do care about keeping spaces to discuss experiences like menstruation with all those who experience it (regardless of gender) but trans activists are not the enemy!
@MaddyPelling
!!!!!!!!! also as advice goes – your room is flawless –– but a DESK WITH A GLASS TOP? How WEIRD would that even LOOK and also how horribly smeary and dusty
New job alert: now that the paperwork is signed, I’m so pleased to say that in September I’ll be returning to
@magdalenoxford
in the newly-created role of Dean for Welfare and Research Fellow! 1/2
Singular "they" is completely grammatical and well-established in English and EVEN IF THIS WEREN'T THE CASE we could and indeed should just change.... the language.... as people have changed the language for centuries to serve themselves better and describe changing realities
Last night I was admitted as a Fellow of
@magdalenoxford
, along with four lovely colleagues, in the presence of the rest of the Fellowship and also Spangle the College Cat.
Signed the contract today - I’m moving to Christ Church in October as a Fellow in English! It’s a five-year post and I’m thrilled. Hurrah. Looking forward to teaching, researching and collaborating all over the shop. Also
@andrewsillett
’s sister-in-law is the librarian, fab.
Have got a visiting fellowship at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice!!! It's my first visiting fellowship anywhere! I am going to do A LOT of duolingo beforehand! Thrilled to a. etc.
1) it's my father's farm, 2) it's my father's woods, 3) it's my father's Barnard Castle, 4) I was blind, in bed, driving to the hospital, the riverbank, my child was vomiting, Happy Easter
Hello! I have two free copies of the UK hardback of
#SearchingforJuliet
to give away! Like this post and I'll pick two accounts at random tomorrow. RTs much appreciated to give as many people a chance as possible! You don't need to be in the UK to join in.
BIG >> Channel 4 has just announced that Jamie Oliver will be presenting a series of teatime shows, for six weeks, with easy-to-follow recipes that people can follow along with at home.
“Jamie: Keep Cooking and Carry On” starts Monday.
I absolutely hate the Wollstonecraft statue. Not only is it ugly af, we don't commemorate male literary giants through sculptures of men with their bits out. Sculptures need to settle for being either ugly OR degrading, not aim for the big 2 out of 2
I would like to request a Visiting Fellowship. I am reliably informed this is how it works now. I do Shakespeare and/or race, sexuality and gender in theatre history and I’m not an evil edgelord racist misogynist so form an orderly queue, please and thank you.
I find
@UKShakespeare
's recent tweet transphobic and disgusting. I don't see the point in retweeting it – you can go find it on their page. But I hope
@UKShakespeare
are ashamed of themselves.
Okay the BBC should give me a gardening show, thanks. I love Monty Don and his acres and his raised beds but people can grow things in Pringles tubes and tin cans in a balcony-less flat.
@BootstrapCook
is right.
#TinCanGardener
it doesn’t have to be cress!
Chris our college porter informs me that the father of Florence Pugh (AMY in LITTLE WOMEN) is the chap who owns and is now selling Cafe Coco, Kazbar, and Tarifa. I just think this is really important and also very specifically East Oxford news.
tonight we read The Winter's Tale on Teams. The Freshers did not know how the play was going to end. And then.... (the most magical bit of Shakespeare; image shared with permission)
Why must writing books involve writing? Why not e.g. writing books = sit in shady spot, drink long drink, charcuterie? why actual sentences and not eg morsels of tasty things on bread?
I am furious about this. So we don't let the poor things appeal their individual exam grades because they are all identical little units produced by their schools, but we DO f***ing weigh them?? We pay individual attention to their WEIGHT but not their BRAINS? HORRIBLE idea.
Should schools weigh pupils to make sure they shift the pounds they've put on during the lockdown?
Health experts want two weigh-ins in September and then in the spring to keep kids on track. But could this just create a generation of calorie counters?
#JeremyVine
Delighted to write this for
@The_Globe
to expand some more on the rich, evolving tradition of playing Juliet – a tradition into which Francesca Amewudah-Rivers will soon step (& in which Felixe Forde is currently shining).
"There is not one Juliet. There never has been"

THREAD 🧵
On Monday, I'm running something I've pondered since 2014 – a class on the Old Testament For English Literature students. Excited and quite nervous. For all those interested this, a question: what one thing should I tell them? Replies will be shared with my students! Thanks
A nice thing in a weird year: my new edition for
@MethuenDrama
of Ibsen's A Doll's House is out now! What festive Scandinavian goodness. What cheer! With thanks to everyone at

Really disappointed to hear that the Charity Commission has approved the LGB Alliance as a charity. The LGB alliance is an anti-trans pressure group. Sometimes people oppose trans rights supposedly to "protect" cis lesbians like me. I reject this completely.

I am a lesbian. I am not a figleaf to cover trans-exclusionary views. I don’t want straight trans-exclusionary people to “protect” me from my trans siblings. If you want to support lesbian/bi women, great, I can give you a list of actual issues. Happy Pride!
revising 1st chapter of next book. Have found a list of all the ships in the Armada. Reply if you'd like to start a new identity as an Elizabethan ship, thanks guys
Actually if you genuinely want to be in a magazine called THE BANSHEE a journal of screaming women, please send/pitch me things at sophievduncan at gmail dot com. The leading magazine for women who scream.

Hate to break it to you, Richard, but there's tonnes of us theatre-history-studying-ladies. We're ladies researching ladies. Hot lady theatre history action.

A list that I participate on has currently become a PERFECT STORM of older male scholars performing curmudgeonly whataboutery because they don't think 'toxic masculinity' (the subject of a young female PhD's current research) exists.
Newnham winning with a netball question is the stuff of legend, they are queens, they have overtaken Robert Gordon as my favourite team this series. They are SO JOYFUL.

Updated my bio: yesterday I moved to
@magdalenoxford
as Research Fellow and Dean for Welfare after four enjoyable, lively years at
@ChCh_Oxford
. I'll be saying a proper goodbye to my lovely
@ChCh_Oxford
colleagues at a dinner later this month.
If you're teaching your children English Lit / anything to do with Shakespeare or C19 literature and they or you have questions, please send them my way! Please RT.
I'm a trained harassment advisor at my college (ChCh), but available to anyone
@UniofOxford
who wants to discuss harassment & related issues. Just putting that out there (I think sometimes at Ox it's not obvious who's who). If you have a similar role, make a similar post!
Gather round, finalists. I definitely heard this method from Sos Eltis et al as an undergrad & here, in all its glory, is The Great 3 Essay In 3 Hour Finals Exam Method. DISCLAIMER, if you already have a timings plan that works for you, then obviously don't...
Imagine being a Met police officer brutalising women as those women protest a woman being murdered by *checks notes* a Met police officer
sorry, "allegedly"
IMAGINE how elated John Major must be to discover Jonny Lee Miller is playing him in The Crown. IMAGINE being John Major and then having Jonny Lee Miller, Lord Byron!! and Sick Boy!! and Mr Knightley!!, cast as you, YOU.
10 years today since first I met
@EmilyKOliver
, little did we think we'd even now be married & on lockdown & saying things like "if you ever went on instagram you wouldn't have missed Lucy Bronze teaching her dog agility" (me) and "can I make a pot out of this?" (her)
Why can’t this absolute piece of shit drag his great carcass out to re-recite what he’s already told his hideous little chums of choice in the press? Get out here, you lazy bastard, or are you still in your other house that we pay for?
Hello! Today, my

edition of Hedda Gabler is published. Many thanks to everyone at Methuen, and also the students who yet again served as a focus group on the cover image.
We have two new Student Editions out today! First up is

Absolutely raging that 2021 census does not allow me to record self as Head and
@EmilyKOliver
as Wife within household, thus frustrating genealogist goals, what is point if cannot record self in manner of 1911 patriarch, also disappointed that no mention on form of eg scullery
Cardinal Wolsey on his way to Ipswich yesterday morning! Borne (not all the way) by Jake & Rachel. A treat to see this Magdalen Fellow in daylight for a moment.
What happened to the lesbian couple on the London bus is disgusting and so frightening. Lesbophobia is real, male violence is endemic, I don’t want other gay women and female couples to have to be afraid.
I mean I’m happy that Jo went to the Lesbian Afterlife with Nice N Easy Hairdye Model, cosy forever in a Gay Girl Autumn (also what is the budget for witness protection housing)

Happy Pride Month: I wish you bread and roses, by which I mean intersectional liberation of all oppressed people everywhere AND rainbow drinks, banner wit, & Raul Esparza singing West Side Story.
other excellent research project ideas: A History Of Cake, Very Expensive Jewellery In The Early Modern Imagination (a practice-as-research project), The Hotels Of The Grand Tour And Their Afterlives, The Rise Of The Champagne Bar in Postmodernist Thought
Here is the email I just sent
@OxfordCity
Council regarding the homophobic hate preachers in Bonn Square this lunchtime. Look forward to a response, and would welcome comments from anyone else affected/involved/equally appalled.
I've now seen this circulating on my feed REPEATEDLY as friends are casually like "I sleep on cloth of gold and one time I was mistaken for Cara Delevingne, I buy all my knickers in Paris. I learned to tango with the ambassador's daughter" and i have NOTHING. NOTHING. AT ALL.
