The strangest thing happened last October. I was in Fopp Covent Garden contemplating buying @michaelkiwanuka ‘s astonishing ‘Love & Hate’ album on vinyl - remember Cold Little Heart (as used in the opening titles of Big Little Lies) and Black Man in a White World. A little voice told me to be good, save money and buy it another day. I left the store, crossed Cambridge Circus into Soho. And who should I see standing on the corner of Old Compton St & Greek Street checking his phone, but Michael Kiwanuka! I nodded and, courteous, he donned and smiled back. I walk on a few yards and stopped in my tracks. In full Larry-David-mode I debated with myself on whether it would be acceptable to say hello to him, share my anecdote and confess that I had left the store without purchasing his record! E-eh…. too awkward! I immediately regretted not telling him how much I loved his music. Well if you’re still reading this post, you are either a fan or believe in manifestations, or both! A few days ago, I was searching the release date for Michael’s forthcoming fourth studio album ‘Small Changes’ (Nov 15th) and realised i’d be missing his Greek Theatre gig by just a few days when i head to LA next month. And who should I bump into today, almost a year after Soho, waiting for his flight at Heathrow? I had to say hello this time. What a lovely man. Yes, I did share the anecdote. And yes, it was (even more?) awkward when he asked me if I bought the vinyl and I had to say: not yet! Michael, I will without fail be pre-ordering ‘Small Changes’, and Love & Hate before i’m Home Again 😝And I can’t wait to catch your next gig in London.
