I’m in Brazil these next two weeks to observe PSOL’s (Partido Socialismo e Liberdade) 8th National Congress since its founding in 2004. A 🧵 on my experiences which I’ll update as I go…
Today’s my 3rd day on strike with 48k workers across the UC system. Thanks to the efforts of
@UAWD_Reform
and reformers across the union, we get strike pay starting on DAY 1! This makes a huge difference to our ability to start and sustain a strike, and ultimately beat the boss.
BREAKING: UC agrees to recognize SRU-UAW in its entirety! This historic victory was brought about by the tireless efforts of thousands of SRs who organized to win a union & a direct response to our massive Strike Authorization Vote. Now let’s win a strong contract for all SRs!
Respectfully, I will be voting no on this TA. Here’s why:
All things being equal, we should ratify a contract based on whether it meets our needs, or we believe that we can’t build the power necessary to win more. Neither of these conditions have been satisfied in my view.
BREAKING - We have tentative agreements that include raises of up to 80% for the lowest paid workers. The strike still continues until the agreements are ratified.
The Logistics 101 workshop
@YDSA_
Winter Con goes crazy. Great overview of the logistics landscape and the critical role of socialist cadres in every major breakthrough in labor history. Got me wanting to drop out of school and organize in logistics 🤪
YDSAers, after a lengthy discussion with the NPC, I am beyond thrilled to report that we are planning for an IN-PERSON NATIONAL WINTER CONFERENCE!!! Still a lot of work ahead, but I know it’s gonna be an incredibly generative and moving weekend. 🥳😈🌹
Last weekend, I went down to Pasadena to canvass for rent control with
@ydsa_caltech
and
@PasadenaTenants
. It was just like Bernie Big Canvasses—sunny Saturday afternoon, volunteers arriving in droves, people feeling energized and hopeful. 1/3
Rashida Tlaib is the best national leader on the American left bar none. Whereas AOC and Bernie’s positions on Palestine have been muddled at best and completely disorganizing at worst, Tlaib has been drawing clear class lines — keeping her firepower aimed at the genocidal
234-188-4: House votes to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the only Palestinian American in Congress, "for promoting false narratives regarding the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for destruction of the State of Israel." She's the 26th House member to be censured.
This was the wager behind the rank and file strategy all along. Organizing in strategic sectors and reforming already-existing, well-resourced, experienced unions into fighting, class struggle organizations can have an outsized impact on the labor movement, especially in terms
“The response from autoworkers at nonunion companies has been overwhelming,” Fain said. “Hundreds of workers across the country, from the West to the Midwest and especially the South, are reaching out to join our movement and to join the UAW.”
"None of this would be happening if it were the old UAW."
Founder of
@labornotes
Jane Slaughter explains how the new leadership of union autoworkers, pushed into power by democratic reforms, won “life-changing” contracts through "unprecedented" organizing and new strategies.
Rest in power, Mike Parker. Your example helped me see the dignity and value in a life dedicated to struggle. In my life, I hope to put into practice all the lessons you shared with us.
Last night, long-time labor activist, socialist, and brilliant Marxist intellectual Mike Parker passed away at 81 years old. He was an incredible person who touched the lives of so many people. I was lucky to get to know him and learn so much from him.
A thread about Mike:
Day 2 of the PSOL Congress is underway. Debate has been overshadowed by the threat of a rules change to undermine proportional representation on PSOL’s executive.
Today’s my last day as Co-Chair of
@CalYDSA
, the chapter where I first cut my teeth as a socialist organizer. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come. E.g. comrades much more talented than me are stepping into my former roles. A dream come true. Thanks for raising me Cal YDSA 🌹🙏
The organizing vibes were too good this week. Teamsters United, YDSA, and Kaiser and John Deere workers got me feeling very determined and brave. Can’t wait to continue living a life dedicated to labor and socialism.
🌹🌹🌹
Another big result: the largest UAW higher ed local,
@uaw2865
, UC student workers, just came in 84% for 1M1V, with 1918 votes!
More results updating in the tracker now. I won't be here past tonight, but follow
@JonahFurman
's thread for news & analysis:
Far from being anti-union, the consideration of different strategic visions is one of the highest expressions of democracy and strength in a union.
I really appreciate the leadership coming from this broad layer of rank-and-file workers. Yesterday's Strike to Win rally was
rank and file organizers across the UC have written an open letter against an anti-union no-vote campaign. read it, sign on, and let's keep building solidarity to fight the boss.
Much gratitude
@YoungLabourUK
for the invaluable exchange of organizational knowledge + skills, and an all-around good time. Socialism will win—in the UK, in the US, everywhere.

Up the Oakland teachers! Education is a public good, and
@OaklandEA
is on the frontlines, defending it against the forces of austerity and privatization.
#Unite4OaklandStudents
The political clarity, courage, and commitment of YDSAers never fail to astonish me. Look at this Winter Con reflection by one of my chapter members! ❤️❤️❤️
Last week, a couple of members of
@breadrosesDSA
got to observe
@revmovimento
’s 8th Congress. Although PSOL — the party that MES is a current within — is becoming increasingly incoherent and bureaucratized, MES is stronger, more diverse, and rooted in
Incredibly heartened to see this reso pass after years of agitation and organizing. YDSA’s cadre recruitment and development capacity is unparalleled. What’s more –– YDSA members are building some of the most dynamic and sophisticated campaigns in DSA. 🧵1/
✅ The YDSA consensus resolution PASSES 72% to 28%!
Congratulations to our YDSA comrades for securing a commitment to build and support YDSA—a key priority for Bread & Roses.
For anybody hoping to get a taste of the debate at PSOL's National Congress,
@VictorLuccas50
subtitled one of the most politically clarifying speeches of the weekend by Porto Alegre city councilor and MES leader
@RobertoPSOL
, arguing that ...
Absolutely historic. A new generation of socialist activists — politicized through Bernie’s presidential campaigns, mass strikes by educators and healthcare workers, and important social movement struggles like BLM — has rekindled the hope of merging labor with the left, …
RFP is officially here! On Saturday, November 11, we launched our inaugural cohort with 36 new activists joining us from NYC/NJ, 9 from the East Bay/SF, and 7 from LA!
tfw dsa’s best socialist musician elected,
@zohrankmamdani
, gives you a shoutout at con and then hammers home the need for rank-and-file organizing, as opposed to currying favor with union leadership >>>
love my org ❤️
It's time.
From Toyota to Tesla, from California to South Carolina, America's autoworkers are ready to Stand Up and win their fair share of the auto industry's record profits.
Join us.
Made it to the LA Troublemakers School. Always amazed by how extensive and experienced the LN orbit is — UTLA, Teamster, ILWU, CWA, IATSE, SBWU, UAW workers out in force today sharing stories about how to successfully fight the boss. 🥰😈
The recent victory of Teamsters United is case in point. While electing new leadership isn’t a huge victory in itself, the new leadership of the IBT has committed to building bottom-up militancy and organizing Amazon!
Right now, the IBT is the only union with the capacity, (1/2)
We've had some successes organizing the unorganized. Nothing that's moved union density even a fraction of a % tho. We've had some success with the r&f strategy, playing a role in larger wholes winning big (UAWD, TDU & O'Brien, strikes, local contract campaigns & reform slates).
All YDSAers and young radicals should read this article, and then take jobs and organize at Starbucks or Amazon, if they can. This is our Freedom Summer moment, if you will. We need to do everything we possibly can to make the most of this opportunity.
Unionization campaigns at Amazon and Starbucks show that we might just be living through the start of a new wave of worker organizing. Socialists need to go all in.
I'm proud that YDSA has taken many steps to formalize its international work this year, and that young organizers are getting more opportunities to grapple with big political questions.

First we democratize the sleeping giant, then we create a nightmare for the employer class. Good victories today, much more to be done to make UAWD a living, breathing presence on the shop floor. LFG!!!

workers. Sindisaúde-RS represents around 80,000 healthcare workers in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Just wrapped up our last 2020-2021 NLC-sponsored event. Wanted to share some thoughts:
Serving on the NLC this past year has been the highlight of my involvement in national YDSA. It feels like we did some of the most important organizing that we'll ever do in building (1/4)
The historic strike by student workers in the University of California system just entered its fifth week. Jacobin spoke with striking workers about the state of the strike and how union members are feeling at this contentious and pivotal moment.
A principled democratic socialist alternative to global capitalism requires developing an independent, critical analysis of the very complicated international landscape; embracing the logic of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” prevents us from doing that. Vote yes on R10-1!
Supporters of amendment R10-1 argue that YDSA should adopt a strategy of "class struggle internationalism" that focuses on building relationships with working class movements abroad. Read their full argument here:
Our opponents in the capitalist class want to divide and conquer us. We’re stronger when we stick together and when we make strategies collectively in an open and democratic manner. It’s the only way we can fight back and win against our enemies.
The victories of Teamsters United and UAWD are two of the most exciting developments in recent U.S. labor/left history. Socialists have a huge opportunity and responsibility to revive a democratic, left-wing, class struggle current in the labor movement. Let's get to work!
Total support for
@ZohranKMamdani
whose solidarity with Palestinians has been unflinching, not just this week, but ever since he's been a part of the organized left. Proud to be in the same organization as him.
Some NY elected officials get arrested for intimidating students with guns, and some get arrested protesting genocide.
That’s the DSA difference.
Thank you
@ZohranKMamdani
for your unwavering solidarity with Palestine.
order of lenin for
@nfayyazi
, a tribune of cal ydsa and the youth socialist movement at large. it comes as no surprise to me that she made some of the most important interventions today at con. i feel so lucky to be in this struggle with you comrade. ❤️
More than 10,000 students signed up to get involved with a YDSA chapter during the 2021 Fall Drive! On campuses and in communities across the country students know that the system has failed them and are standing up to organize for the world that they deserve! 🌹
Through my involvement with YDSA I’ve come to understand how power works and what ordinary working class people can do to wield it. I’m proud to be running on a slate that is committed to delivering the experience of political power to as many working class students as possible.
Absolutely not. We got a better deal because we recommitted to our strike, and because UC is shaking in its boots thinking about the looming grading deadline and other major inflection points approaching in this struggle.
I always learn a lot when talking with
@jergong
. His new piece in
@socialistcall
is, in my opinion, the best articulation of how the rank-and-file strategy is a strategy for winning socialism, not just an approach towards the labor movement.
The rank-and-file strategy is more than just a tactic for labor organizing or a calling for young radicals. It’s a strategy for building a working-class movement with the consciousness and power to win socialism.
The
@RankAndFileProj
is here! Just got off an incredibly inspiring launch call featuring some of the best on the socialist labor left. If you want to help re-establish a socialist class struggle current in the labor movement, check us out:
.
@GavinNewsom
got quoted in the press saying that he’s against the tuition increases, but he also appointed the Regents that voted to institute the hike. What’s up with that Gavin? 🤔🤔🤔
i scheduled 4 1:1's with new dsa recruits for this afternoon, and that was before we found out about the sweep. it's so surreal seeing the movement grow before my eyes. more dubs for the working class to come. ❤️✊🌹
So excited to back this slate, including some of the most dedicated and principled comrades I know. Angels of socialism, all of them.
And, as always, really proud of B&R YDSA for giving so much thought to the work we'll be continuing to push in YDSA and beyond.
This morning 100+ drivers met to debate our demands for the next UPS contract. The convo quickly turned to PVDs - personal vehicle drivers, gig workers UPS wants to use to do our jobs. We won’t stand for it. We will defend our jobs and the future of dignified union work!
@HanginOutOnline
@YDSA_
The Activist exists not only to communicate official YDSA positions, but also to facilitate debate amongst members. The tweet qualifies the piece as non-endorsed/official position by saying "Supporters of R10-1 argue..."
When you have comrades as great as these, you really feel your power and the urgency of struggle. I have so much gratitude for my East Bay crew; they inspire me to (re)commit to socialism every single day. ❤️🍞🌹✊
