In 2007, I was 23 and left my job as a web developer to build a company with

10 years ago today, Secret launched.
Today, Speakeasy launches.
Built by members of the original team, Speakeasy is a fresh and nostalgic homage to the original concept.
It’s invite-only, hidden from App Stores, and moderated by AI.
2️⃣ Ship early, ship often
The market doesn't reward perfection, it rewards solutions.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. The sooner you ship, the sooner you learn. Waiting means missed opportunities to deliver value.
Keep putting points on the board. Stack small wins.
1️⃣ Minimize external dependencies
If your team's success is dependent on someone else's backlog, you've already lost control of your velocity.
Keep your critical path in-house whenever possible. Choose tools & services with minimal lock-in.
@catalinmpit
Disagree.
Standups aren’t only for providing updates - it allows you to stay connected with your team and build rapport.
They should be as brief as possible, but don’t underestimate the importance of human connection.
We do async standup once a week. Otherwise, face to face.
The breadth of AI/ML startups in YC's latest batch underscores how rapidly artificial intelligence is advancing and being commercialized across almost every industry and business function imaginable.
My breakthroughs often come through doing, not thinking. Thinking can help choose the starting point, but the magic happens during the process.
Here are 8 reasons why you should stop thinking and start building 🧵👇

🎯 Lesson 1: Nail execution velocity
YC drills founders to move fast, set the right velocity early & maintain momentum at all costs.
In the early stages, speed is your biggest advantage.
@andrewchen
These users you’re losing, though, would also be the ones who are much less likely to convert to paying customers anyway.
At Rosebud, we had no onboarding and then we added one. The hypothesis was that it would increase retention and activation rate, and it did.
It’s not about
@LasVegasTodd
@ycombinator
After reviewing all of the startups, it is a tsunami. The wave will crash, but everything will be changed by it.
This is not like crypto. New AI technology (eg LLM) have myriad tangible applications.
We’re going to see mass, rapid transformation across all industries.
We just launched an AI-powered Internal Family Systems (IFS) journal on
@joinrosebud
!
Designed in partnership with a licensed IFS therapist, this journal helps identify your different inner voices and how each one is trying to help you, even when they conflict.
Try it today!
3️⃣ Prioritize ruthlessly
velocity += value
Every feature request can feel urgent, but they can't all be a priority. Focus on the most critical tasks that deliver the most value.
Use a simple framework like RICE to objectively stack-rank your backlog.
@SterlingCooley
This post needs some community notes. Vague announcement with big claims and no information - seems highly suspect. If true, would expect a different form of communication.
🏃🏻♂️ Lesson 2: Solve real problems ASAP
Founders must validate their startup solves urgent customer needs. Talk to users constantly & iterate.
Fall in love with the problem, not your solution. Feedback is your guiding light.
🧘♀️ Lesson 4: Founder health is key
YC gave Oura rings to all founders, emphasizing sleep, exercise, and stress management.
You're your own worst enemy for the first 2 years.
It's amazing what a compassionate ear can do for your personal growth. Humbled to see the scale of impact that
@joinrosebud
is having.

We still have a ways to go, but the distance traveled so far is something to honor.
🌹

We continue to be humbled and moved by your stories of growth and transformation.
We have a lot of exciting updates coming for you in the next couple of months.

How it started vs How it's going 🚀
A year ago, I got a DM on Discord from
@PradettoMichael
, a newly self-taught engineer looking to switch careers.
Today, he's joining the
@joinrosebud
team as a full-time junior engineer.
He started part-time owning manual QA with a smile,
😅 Lesson 5: Embrace the intensity
Long days, high pressure, a rollercoaster. YC teaches calm under fire & to channel it into motivation.
The startup journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Resilience and grit are essential.
5️⃣ Stay agile
Planning is useful, but plans are useless.
Don't get attached to plans. Stay focused on getting to the right outcome and finding the shortest path to value.
Work in short sprints with clear goals. The sooner you learn, the sooner you can iterate meaningfully.
6️⃣ Automate to accelerate
Working smart amplifies the impact of working hard. Automate the mundane so you can accelerate the meaningful.
Invest in tools that eliminate repetitive tasks so your team can focus on high-value work. Create templates and reusable components.
🤝 Lesson 6: Work together, live together.
After two years of COVID, YC emphasized in-person collaboration. Batch camaraderie is real - late night hacks, shared lessons.
Magic happens when founders collaborate IRL. Remote work has its place, but IRL bonds are irreplaceable.
It's a shame to see
@theinformation
spinning run-of-the-mill startup challenges into hit pieces without even interviewing the founders they are trying to tear down.
This is not journalism.
💸 Lesson 3: Don't dilute too much or raise too much money
YC teaches strategic fundraising to maintain control and focus.
More money isn't always better. It can lead to sloppy execution, misaligned incentives and limited outcomes.
9️⃣ Celebrate wins and learn from failures
Instead of quickly moving onto the next thing, pause to celebrate your wins, or run a blameless post-mortem when things go awry.
Celebrating wins keeps morale high, while learning from failures prevents you from repeating mistakes.
@auren
@amasad
I believe the 30-40% productivity boost on a senior engineer is much more impactful than a junior engineer copy pasting code from ChatGPT. Code from ChatGPT can be dangerous, as it is often wrong. The fundamental systems-level understanding that is required to write good code
🔟 Maintain a sense of urgency
Create aggressive deadlines that force you to prioritize what’s most important and avoid scope creep.
Velocity is as much about mindset as it is about process. When everyone feels a sense of urgency, obstacles get solved and things get done.
7️⃣ Bias towards action
Make decisions quickly based on available information. Avoid analysis paralysis or waiting for perfect conditions.
A decent decision made quickly is better than a perfect decision made too late. Acting swiftly helps learnings compound faster.
8️⃣ Communicate impeccably
Like a car's wheels, your team must remain aligned for optimal velocity. Clarity accelerates action.
Instead of long, meandering meetings, insist on clear agendas, actionable outcomes, and concise, asynchronous communication.
Building a startup is insanely hard. Some would call it a negligent behavior.
YC's teachings blend hard-won wisdom with raw startup grit to help founders transform bright ideas into world-changing companies.
4️⃣ Empower your team
Velocity is a team sport. It's not about how fast any one individual can go, but how fast the team can go together.
Hire great people, align them to the mission, and then trust them to execute.
Follow
@DanielPink
's Autonomy, Purpose, and Mastery framework.
@rjvir
Firebase is a pain to build on. The SDK is dated.
It’s not a choice you end up loving down the line.
Good luck querying their raw API through your edge functions. Nightmare.
