Watch the tutor catch this 9 year old's misconception and gently question him until he figures it out himself. Even if he kept misunderstanding, the tutor would never lose patience or be disappointed in him. Would just keep going until he grokked it.

The worst thing school does is condition people to accept commands without explanation. This is why people treat "experts" like priests. Teach your kids not to "trust" experts, but to seek explanations from them. And teach them there is no explanation they cannot understand.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit I haven’t done this before, but today I gave my boys a list of their daily tasks including chores, fitness, and academics. When they’re done they’re done, I’m not asking them to do anything else. They seem to like this a lot.

When @synthesischool is in full flower, our students will reach the 99th percentile in math, science, and language in 1-2 hours a day on screen, and spend the rest of their days in sports, exploring nature, etc. The goal is not more screen time, but to restore childhood.

The future of education is likely a much *smaller* education industry. College is too expensive and the vast majority of people shouldn't go. K-12 is mostly daycare, and the academics portion can be done in 1/10th the time.

Here's what Josh and I are doing for our own kids... 1/ Forest school 3-4 hrs/day Wander in the woods or beach. 10-15 kids w/ a teacher or two. Socialize and observe ecosystems. Foster joie de vivre. Avoid spirit-crushing modern school environment.

Hiring more won’t make you go faster because the output of your projects follows a power law. When constrained by people, you focus on the 1-2 most critical bottlenecks. When you have extra people they work on non-bottlenecks, which does nothing to increase overall speed.

Can already see where this is going. We're going to end up paying the top Synthesis 14 year olds $30k to train as software engineers for a year, then hiring them at age 15 and paying them $100k salary. Mostly this will happen outside of the U.S.

Our boy turned 7. In ancient Sparta, this is the end of childhood. He would be torn from his mother to enter the agogé, brutal training to become a Spartan peer. In modern California, we are at his little league game. Seems like progress.
