Decolonisation should remain a question, rather than an answer,
@PriyamvadaGopal
says in relation to efforts to decolonise the curriculum in literary studies. The work is ongoing. Thank you for the insightful talk today on Bandung conf & for organising this

So excited about this conference theme! And an absolut delight to be co-organising this with resident PhD scholars of the
@UCD_Hum_Inst

While cannibalism is about eating people, it is definitely more than that-as the speakers of
#CannibalConsumption
are already exploring in the conf. That being said, I am super excited by these (vegan) severed fingers here. Thanks
@theunkindcity
for getting these!
@UCD_Hum_Inst
Incredibly thought-provoking talk by
@YaminiNarayanan
organised by
@CfHAS
where she speaks about her new book
#MotherCowMotherIndia
, a groundbreaking and insightful analysis of how Indian cow politics is mobilised as a weapon of racial & religious violence🐄🇮🇳📚
Okay, so it is a snow day here in Dublin today, but we are going ahead!
#CannibalConsumption
conference kicks off with a mouth-watering menu of presentations on cannibalism in culture, capitalism, and critique. Horror, colonialism, queerness, art, and more. Bon appétit!

Had such a great time at the
#extractivistlegacies
conference! Huge thanks to
@megkuster
&
@comyn_scomyn
for putting together such a thought-provoking event. Wonderful meeting so many generous and kind people - their comments and suggestions have given me so much to think about.
Hivemind: I am trying to find critical works that have discussed animal factory farms through the ecohorror mode/ as ecohorror. For ex. Kristen Angierski's analysis of Okja in 'Fear and Nature' (eds,
@christymtidwell
&
@CarterSoles
) is fantastic. Please RT for reach. Thank you!

As I say bye to Sheffield and head back to Dublin, thank you once again to everyone at the
#ConsumingTheGothic
conference yesterday for your papers, your time, and generosity with comments and thoughts. Thanks for this wonderful summary thread,

Next we have Poulomi Choudhury with 'Ecohorrific Consumption and the Right-Wing Politics in Joseph D'Lacey's 'Meat' '

That’s a wrap for the panels of the
#CannibalConsumption
conference! What a generative and thought-provoking series of presentations. I’m sure minds are full of ideas.🧠🤯
Next up is Caitlin Brown,
@SociologyLancs
presenting on the social construction of dirtiness in relation to queer cannibalism in Hannibal and Damher. 🎥
This thread needs a lot more love and attention! What a fantastic and thoughtfully curated list of books related to the place of animals (and flesh) in the current epoch. 🥩🌏

The paper reminds us that 'a kiss is the beginning of cannibalism'(George Batailles). The act of biting connects the vampire, the zombie, and the cannibal but also adds an element of sexuality and eroticism to their violent acts,
@NicoleGHam
argues.
Opening the panel on cannibalism and queerness, is
@NicoleGHam
exploring the romanticism and sexuality of cannibalism in The Living Dead Girl (1982) and Bones And All (2022) 💘
The Nonhuman Animals in the Age of Extinction and Mass Production conf aims to critically examine the challenges posed by the destruction of habitats and animal exploitation, which drive both extinction and overproduction of animal life.🌳🏭(2/6)
The paper also examines the cultural shift of cannibals from horror to romance & explains why themes of queer monstrosity appeal to queer viewers & how cannibals can be read as metaphors for queer romance. A captivating & provocative analysis.

Also worth mentioning is the incredible field trip to Abbeyleix Bog Project and being able to witness the amazing impact of community-driven conservation efforts on the multispecies habitat here. So inspiring to see the recovery of the area. Website:

I mean, if there are "vegetarian" vampires, surely there's a case to be made there? Are zombies cannibals? Food for discussion during lunch at the conference!
Have sadly struggled to verbalise to my friends why saying
#NotAllMen
is damaging. This analogy explains it all. It's not comparing men to ticks, but rather the fear/ precautions we always have to take.
For those who have been following the updates for our conference or have registered, please note the *change of venue*. The in-person conference on 17 May will be held in the 📍UCD Science Hub (next to the lake), Room 1.51. (3/6)

Yep, actually how I felt when I kept explaining to doctors in Ireland that my menstruation pain can't be "normal." I couldn't execute daily tasks! Chronic pain regularly ignored by our paternalistic, blood-sucking medical system.
on reddit someone posted a literal rock that came out of their ear after more than 20 years stuck in there (since childhood), and they seem to be stuck in a repeating loop, endlessly explaining to redditors the realities of having a doctor who fundamentally doesn't believe you

Trinity Professor of Finance Brian Lucey has come under fire for a tweet in which he stated that “postgraduate students aren’t employees” and warned against increasing stipends for PhD researchers.
Wondering if all conferences should have an element of a field trip now! That would be so cool. Got to know so much more about Glendalough and the mining history of Ireland! See:

"Alarming accusations are surfacing at a Nebraska meatpacking plant where a sanitation company used migrant children in a dangerous job cleaning equipment." Fines are not enough. They need to go to prison.

Hi, just chiming in here to say that the conference will take place in hybrid mode, so please feel free to register to attend online. See you there! (I am one of the co-organisers).
Okay, so we are definitely not thinking along the lines of - hey, let's just *not* kill other animals. Instead, let's keep up the numbers so we can make *sustainable (?!) flight* fuel. Handy.
"Flight from Paris to New York would need fat from 8,800 dead pigs..."
"Fuel made from dead animals has grown fortyfold since 2006. Much of it is used in cars and trucks as biodiesel.
UK & EU governments are keen to increase its use to make aviation greener."
Don't we already slaughter too many animals as it is?
Opening remarks by Anne Fuchs, director of
@HumanitiesUCD
and HI resident
@theunkindcity
sets the tone for the
#CannibalConsumption
conference. Themes of objectives and challenges of interdisciplinary research on cannibalism are highlighted. A delicious start to the conference!
So
@Postvox
, it has been over two months & I still not heard back from you about you losing my CITIZENSHIP documents. I sent these from Dublin GPO - how on earth could you misplace it? Would you ever understand the absolute helplessness I feel at losing such incredibly imp docs?
@Meat_DairyFacts
@UofCalifornia
The study also goes on to say, “In a stable climate, trees store more carbon than grasslands...But in a vulnerable, warming, drought-likely future, we could lose some of the most productive carbon sinks on the planet."
The concept of 'jugaad' and how it is used to turn a blind eye to bovine slaughter is so incredibly fascinating (and heartbreaking). A must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of animal rights in India, right-wing nationalism, and social justice.
Really enjoying all the positive support for smoking. I can attest I always meet the most fascinating people during the smoking breaks at conferences 🚬🤘
It's a new month, which means a new theme. This month it's
