Hey, so I'm starting a new tabletop RPG website with
@lincodega
and
@RowanZeoli
called Rascal. We're really excited and also nervous for this project, and I'd super appreciate y'all's support!
We're gonna do some cool shit.
Hi, We’re Rascal, a new, independent, reader-supported, worker-owned outlet for journalism about TTRPGs, actual plays, and the people who make them.
We strive to sustainably publish compelling, deeply-reported, and fearlessly honest journalism
We’re also a little cheeky.
Regardless of contract, Wizards of the Coasts' behaviour towards PanzerLion and his creative work reads at cross purposes with every public statement the publisher made in 2020 regarding PoC contributors.
I spoke to a bunch of tabletop creators - RPGs and board games - about what a post-Twitter future looked like.
The answer: exhaustion at building an audience all over, worry over social media's influence on the industry, and a big fear that many won't survive the transition.
Baldur's Gate 3 might retroactively be the worst thing to happen to D&D as a tabletop RPG product. Hasbro seems increasingly desperate to dangle any morsel of recognizable imagery in front of that fandom as a sales strategy.
If you're a former Hasbro employee willing to chat with me, the reporter on this piece, about your experience please reach out.
I want to ensure y'all's stories are told with care, attention and no corporate interference. I protect my sources. DMs open, ✉️ in bio.
Several
@Card_Kingdom
employees described the poor conditions within the MTG retailer that led to the formation of
@CKUnion_
. Chief among them is a pervasive, formalized system of overworking employees to compensate for huge retention problems.
The photograph used to promote the D&D LEGO set is so interesting to me. They're all 30-somethings who dress like they have enough disposable income for hobbies.
Neither company is attempting to position their toy based on a game to a younger audience, much less actual children.
Would there be any interest in a Discord server for tabletop journalists, critics, essayists, etc? (all seven of us lol)
Twitter unnecessarily balkanizes this profession, and if nothing else I'd love a spot to grab folks for playing/reviewing/talking about games.
The folks at
@possum_creek
are taking their planned crowdfunding project to Indiegogo in one of the first major departures from Kickstarter, post-blockchain plans.
The move is not a perfect solution, nor without risk, but the team wants to set an example for others.
Took a crack at a shortlist of some of the most promising smaller TRPGs for 2023.
It's a good list, and I stand by it. But it's also not even close to comprehensive or complete, and I think the term "indie" is an empty indicator in most uses. Still, these games whip ass.
Nearly 300 ttrpgs are in this fantastic bundle, including solo joints, lyric games, full systems and goofy one-pagers.
It's an absolute steal that aids Palestinian communities.
The folks at
@PaizoWorkers
have announced the formation of a union following harassment, mistreatment by management and "untenable crunch conditions on a regular basis", among other terrible conditions.
Hard to imagine a funnier shot-> chaser than WotC wringing their hands about the industry forcing a price increase on players, only for their parent company to barge into the room yelling
WOO YEAH MTG PROFITS BABEY. THIRD BEST SELLING SET EVER. KAMIGAWA GOATED!!!
Hey there! I'm looking to speak with nonwhite designers working on OSR tabletop RPGs, both the popular systems (Mothership, Mork Borg, DCC, OSE) as well as the more experimental stuff. DMs are open, emails in bio.
Please share and ask questions below!
Dimension 20's next season will sideline D&D for a homebrewed system, which is always exciting. I'm very curious what "heavily inspired" means at the table, tho.
In a comment to Rascal, a spokesperson confirmed that the new season of
@dimension20show
will be played with Never Stop Blowing Up—a homebrewed system heavily inspired by Hunters Entertainment's Kids on Bikes.
Watch the new trailer on Rascal.
Now that I'm a full-time Rascal (for the time being), I wanna write about more tabletop RPGs doing interesting and cool shit.
If you know of any hot and fresh games (not self-promo), email me a link here: chase

When asked about SCG CON's dropping vax requirements, Hoefling spends 11 straight minutes prevaricating about MTG twitter "misrepresenting" his company and being "overly outraged." Calls them assholes and bullies, "blatantly disingenuous and performative."
My latest on the brilliant work of designer and consultant
@mustangsart
. Geralt and disability are more intrinsically linked than you think, and that should be reflected in his games and world.
Jon Freeman and Gregory May's legal representative is either the most foolish anti-union lawyer I've ever witnessed or is actively throwing this fight.
One of the many things I love about
@jdragsky
's Wanderhome is that it's ostensibly peaceful world still deals with trauma and grief.
A big part of its draw is equipping players with the tools to engage with those dark scars. My review, and my Polygon debut:
Was extremely pleased to write Polygon's list of the year's best indie
#ttrpg
, even though five games was an incredibly tough shortlist.
I think my picks are all excellent games but also show the ways in which designers are both pushing boundaries and preconceptions.
These kinds of executive moves don't register with the average player, but it's a signal of confidence to shareholders that D&D's future will hinge on increased digital business.
New medication dosage has been doing wonders for me, so let's go ahead and post this publicly:
I plan to play some solo ttrpgs weekly on Twitch, starting soon! If watching someone struggle through creative writing prompts sound fun, throw some recent recommendations my way.
Hey howdy! I'd like to talk with folks about reading tabletop RPG books: how and why you do it, the craft of understanding a game without playing it, what makes a book "good" to read, etc.
All comers welcome!

The largest takeaway from the leaked OGL 1.1 document is that WotC no longer needs to rely on creator communities fueling the popularity of D&D. The brand is likely self-sustaining as long as they keep pumping out Content.
OGL 1.1 secures royalties and passive revenue for them.
Yesterday, I received the full text of the OGL 1.1 from a reputable source. The updated Open Gaming License is incredibly restrictive, demands community surveillance and, most importantly, renders the previous WotC OGL an unauthorized agreement.
Breaking my long (and lovely) Twitter hiatus to boost this opinion of the Candela Obscura quickstart document.
In short, I wonder if it even wants to be a horror RPG or just really loves spooky vibes.
Okay I'm officially off for a three-day weekend, so let's start it with some sincerity.
I'm super thankful the Dicebreaker readers felt not only comfortable but obligated to call us out for not being diligent on coverage of what turned out to be a terrible project
“We’ve basically bought a set of rough beta rules for the cost of a finished product, which is unacceptable.”
Dark Soul RPG players are frustrated and disappointed with how many errors survived all the way to print.
Recooking this because I want to see the unionizing push in the tabletop space covered as much as possible, whether it existed before this moment or is just spinning up.

Do you work at a TRPG or board game company that is discussing unionization in the wake of
#UnionizePaizo
? Has your company tried in the past? Do you want to?
I'd like to chat for a story about the history and future of unions in this space. RTs & shares appreciated!
The wonderful
@mustangsart
spoke briefly with me about not only their new addition for disabled Cyberpunk Red players, but how it feels to be immortalized as an incredibly suave and imperious character, in-universe.
I have immense sympathy for folks upset with the state of indie rpg coverage from pubs like DB, Polygon and Wargamer.
I also wish the answer was as simple as us doing more it, but it's extremely not.
I was proud to tackle the prospect of TTRPG's future, specifically through the lens of SRDs and licenses, for Polygon's Tabletop Week. Some publishers believe they can create a more equitable version of WotC's walled gardens, but indie creators are too busy smashing walls down.
Spending part of my day off making a list of beautiful games I want on my shelf. Stuff like Fall of Magic, A Quiet Year, and Mork Borg.
So, ruin my budget. Tell me your personal picks for gorgeous sourcebooks, supplements and unconventional ttrpgs I need to display.
Sometimes you gotta clown a CEO who believes he can both lay off 20% of his workers and also affect any sort of camaraderie with me. My latest at Rascal:
Hasbro's Chris Cocks hides an executive's cynicism behind his well-trod "fellow fan" persona. It's well past time we stopped swallowing the CEO's line.
The TRPG adaptation machine keeps spinning. I wonder if ATLA broke a floodgate or if there's something else fueling this recent spate of established IPs gunning for the table.
A genuinely tragic part of any possible Twitter exodus is that the largescale platforming of the internet means huge numbers of indie creators have spent YEARS developing and relying on a marketing apparatus centered on Itch/Steam/DTRPG (bad) and social media (worse).
hey if you quit this hellsite, make sure to follow all the indie game devs you like on steam, itch, or whatever other social media you can find them on... because most of us don't have big/any marketing budgets and still rely on socials to get the word out
Found a reason to write about MTG on Rascal as soon as possible.
Hasbro is streamlining its trading card game for maximum profit, and I wager D&D isn't far behind - especially as it becomes primarily digital.
Historical board games are super interesting design spaces that don't tend to garner a lot of attention from the enthusiast crowd, but Rising Waters' focus on Black communities who faced nature's wrath on one side and systemic racism on the other looks incredible.
What tabletop games should I check out before the end of the year? Card, board, RPG, whatever!
(Dicebreaker doesn't do GOTY lists per se, but I wanna check out anything you feel got lost in the noise before EoY)
I've been reporting on projects working to erode the largely Western ediface of ttrpgs since I started at Dicebreaker.
LATAM Breakout, hosted by
@soulmuppetRPG
, is the latest and brings so many cool voices to the fore.
I'm looking to chat briefly with Actual Players, GMs and ttrpg designers about romance at the table for a possible piece.
If you're interested, fell free to reach out in DMs, email (chasewritesthings [@] gmail) or secure Signal message. RTs appreciated!
Baffling how any of the folks involved with the summit approved this front-facing marketing.
POC and non-men are on the list of speakers, but their names are buried in the event's details. An easy win squandered by what I hope is only thoughtlessness.
I'm curious if tabletop folks are looking for marketing and audience gathering alternatives to Twitter, yet. This place was never close a perfect tool, but certainly the alternative isn't just Itch and individual newsletters?
It's genuinely baffling that Gen Con, the largest tabletop convention in the US, hasn't simply released a public statement--or provided one to the press.
Attendees are now refunding tickets, and online hatemongers are calling this whole circus a win.
Monday June 24, the CRIT Awards announced they cancelled their ceremony at Gen Con due to "safety concerns" amid online harassment from Zionists. So far neither Gen Con or the CRIT Awards have offered definitive answers. Read for the full timeline:
I understand what it means to ask people to give any money during these continually unprecedented times.
But I also have to believe that people will pay for the kind of journalism this industry deserves.

Want to get back into solo RPGs after some time of not playing any beyond Apothecaria. What are the interesting and exciting ones that you've enjoyed lately? Journaling, hexcrawls, hacks, whatever!
Individually, the promotional artwork for D&D 2024 is fine. Even great!
Together, it paints the the safest, designed-by-committee version of the industry's reigning game. Where the hell is D&D's visual identity?
Employees told me that the popularity boom of
#MagicTheGathering
over the last three years has created a constant crunch environment. And while Card Kingdom execs celebrate record revenue, workers say none of that success has improved their lives.
I had the opportunity to recommend some incredible ttrpgs for fans of
#Bridgerton
and
#ofmd
looking to tell their own regency or pirate stories.
Especially the historically transgressive kind 👀
This is a call for Zine Month 2023 projects. I'll be covering as much as I can
@Dicebreaker
so one of my favorite grassroots events of the year isn't swallowed by D&D.
Email is best (in bio), but DM and replies here also work! Show me those cool zines, people.
#zimo
#Zimo23
You might have heard about the recent backlash against the Nookazon discord silencing support for BLM and the national protests.
It turns out their history of troubling moderation goes deeper. My report:
I spoke to several former employees, contractors and partnered designers who allege the working toxic, manipulative and stressful conditions within
@Pandasaurusgame
stems directly from its co-owners.
I visited a huge wetlands about an hour south of me that uses all indigenous plants and animals to create a closed-loop natural filtration system for the nearby metro area while also funding an educational center for school children and the public.
Just rad as hell.
On June 6,
@TabletopWU
held their first public negotiations with Hex & Co lawyer Andrew Hoffman who previously told them to "go to hell"
Their next in person meeting won't be for three months, since Hoffman will be at his summer vacation home
What started as a janky video tour of the
#ACNH
museum ended in discussions about conservation, hidden labor, decolonization, and more.
Come check out my Kotaku premiere!
Called "flexing", the system attempts to cover several dozen hours of missing labor per day by requiring individuals to pick up half-shifts for no extra pay before returning to finish their own work.
I want to jump back into the solo tabletop RPG space head first for some
@rascal_news
coverage. Recommend me some titles that have come out in the last few months, and also creators who are doing interesting/weird shit with solo games.
Hi I'm looking to chat with tabletop designers of all sizes about your thoughts on the state of crowdfunding for a
@joindicebreaker
piece. Positive, negative, ambivalent - all opinions welcome! DMs open and email/signal in bio.
RTs welcome and appreciated!
But I'd much rather have an audience that holds us accountable than one that capitulates and kowtows when we fuck up.
Y'all want adequate coverage and advocacy of the tabletop community, and I'm going to keep improving and striving to one day meet that mark.
Thank you.
Berserk Games plans to reassess Tabletop Sim's moderation approach but is tight-lipped on details. The last week has been a saga of public outcry, Steam review bombing and lingering cynicism for many players.
Both
#RPGSEA
and
#RPGLATAM
have seen some standout successes this year (among their constant excellence), but
@capacle
explains that non-Western creators struggle simply to be seen.
Maybe this is a weird ask, but I'm wanting to join/start a group to play through the dozens of ttrpgs on my backlog with folks who don't mind spending 3-5 sessions max in each setting.
Mutuals/other journos/ttrpg folks only.
Also lemme know if this is a shit idea lmao
One last pitch for comments here:
Are you a tabletop creator worried about your future post-Twitter? Is this the only professional space you've known, or have you been through this fracturing before?
Reach out! DMs are okay, but email is better: chase.carter

Gundam is a fandom I simply do not have time to enter myself, but I love watching it from afar. Like, someone will post a chunky ass green refrigerator dude named Jonko Unit and the comments erupt into hoots and hollers.
I love that for y'all.
Dicebreaker is looking to speak with any current or former Wormwood Gaming employees about conditions at the company, specifically human resource practices.
Contact info in bio. Signal/Proton for secure messaging. RTs and shares appreciated.
I spoke to
@GilaRPGs
about launching, then almost immediately cancelling his latest RPG Kickstarter after angry Warframe fans came knocking at every digital door.
“This is a demonstration of a vocal minority of angry trolls getting what they wanted”: Cancelled Warframe-inspired RPG highlights the destructive toxicity of online fandom
Let me tell you, I also don't like spending my precious few moments on this earth always writing about That One RPG.
But I do enjoy being employed and eating food, so
Considering using the winter break to stream some solo RPGs and other game-adjacent stuff. Clear out the backlog, appease my poisoned work brain, etc. What's the interest in something like that? Do folks enjoy watching others play solo stuff?
Fighting for my life defending the em-dash against the bad opinions of my UK coworkers, and it's not even 7 am.
Never say I am not passionate about my job. There is no hill too small for dying upon.
Wyrmwood Gaming had a hell of a week first denying responsibility for a sexual assault on its property, and then later apologizing for its "tone deaf and harmful" response video.
The company has fallen silent as charitable partners divest and Kickstarter waggles its fingers.
At last count, there's already over 120 projects showcased on the
#ZineMonth2022
website. I looked at a scant nine of them, and its already wall to wall bangers.
Weekend readers: I reviewed
@possum_creek
's Wanderhome for Polygon.
Peace can mean halcyon adventures or it can mean finally cleaning and dressing the psychological wounds of warfare. This game does both in spades.
I'll say two things not as a defense but as hard truth: the team is small, and I'm not even a full, real part of it. I'm also very new to this space.
We are going to make mistakes, miss important details and simply not know some things that should be common knowledge.
Not to shit on anyone's parade, but Hasbro won't replace Williams with someone who cares about creative artistry first and foremost. This isn't a win.
Best estimate: it shows the cracks in Cocks' Blueprint 2.0 and Hasbro slowly, gradually considers a different tack.
BREAKING: Cynthia Williams, President of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Gaming is resigning after two years, according to an SEC filing. Her successor is not yet announced. We have reached out for a comment about what this might mean for WotC.
Props to
@humansofmagic
for continuing to push Pete on the question because this dude is obviously attempting to wriggle out of saying anything definitive. It's hilarious and frustrating.
The Marvel Multiverse RPG could celebrate why we tell superhero stories, but for now its a disappointing retread of games you already own and regularly play.
Without directly referencing GT Talavera or how a player wearing Nazi images on their clothes entered under the name Austrian Painter, Games Workshop denounces hate groups in their games' communities.
Actionable steps to implement that stance: 0

Finally found time to publish my thoughts on the remastered Into the Odd. It's both a fantastic ruleset for quick and dirty dungeon delving and a leg sweep of the whole adventuring power fantasy.
I've quickly learned how common it is for RPG designers to goad each other to turn shitposts into fleshed-out games.
@SandyPugGames
' Ten Million HP Planet seems like so much more, though.
Two-pronged question for everyone:
- if you design board games/RPGs or are deep in the hobby, what topics deserve more coverage? Can be anything!
- if you are outside the hobby, what would grab your interest? What kind of coverage would make you click through?
I was not prepared for
@sailorsctaustin
dropping Recess as a superhero inspiration, but their argument won me over.
Check out the rest of our talk about Kids in Capes and what's changed in the latest mixture of dice and precocious youngsters.
Kids in Capes, the latest tabletop RPG from
