.@SenKatieBritt here’s an argument to be made for basic research in our country, much of which happens at our universities. Where things jump off the rails is when people like Fauci find themselves as the recipients of royalties from patents that are the result of said research. Further, when research is funded not for the purpose of basic science, rather to further a political agenda. “Here’s your piece of $50M to research how frog farts are causing climate change due to the impact of humans on their environment.” This funding can come through a more streamline process not tied to specific agencies. This can be introduced by Members of Congress. Congress can pass targeted “individual funding bills” (not items jammed into a Continuing Resolution) that only require the participation of the Department of Treasury to implement. Congress itself should have oversight responsibility over the spending in such bills not agencies, or bureaucrats.
