People die by suicide for a number of reasons: depression, sadness from childhood abuse, trauma, substance abuse, relationship breakdown. Veterans are at particular risk.
Suicide should never be stigmatized.
Loving reminder: People don't "commit" suicide. Suicide is not a sin or crime. We "die by" or "die from" suicide. Let's try not to further stigmatize mental illness and suicidal ideation with our words. And if you're hearing this for the first time, great! Pass it on.
