I spoke today to the senior leadership of the Public service. My message in a nutshell: be bold, get back to basics and treat taxpayers and their money with respect. NB In the 6 years from 2017-2023, the core public service grew 34% to 63,117 FTE’s & salary costs grew by 72% to about $6.1 Billion per year. The core public service includes departments & departmental agencies only and excludes the wider public sector eg Defence, Police, Corrections, Teachers, Nurses, Doctors & other healthcare workers. It’s a shocking indictment on the previous government. Despite all the extra money and staff, things did not improve for New Zealanders.

Whether you like McDs or not and whether you support them opening in Wanaka or not, this points to a bigger picture and headache for our future. Why the hell any business would want to invest in this country these days is beyond me.
Sort of a perfect example of everything wrong with the RMA. Months to make a decision. A decision by a panel! Endless submissions incl by taxpayer funded neo-puritans. Various small stupid changes like reducing height of the… logo. Over a… McDonalds.

@Shane58637790 So everything’s still going up, it’s just going up by 3% every 3 months instead of 7%. We’d need deflation to return to paying $6 for a block of butter which now costs $7. Plus I think food has suffered much higher inflation than other goods ans services.
