Let your son make up his own mind. If it really came to war, we would have little choice except for declaring ourselves conscientious objectors. Every (or at least most) Britons know and accept that we may have to fight for our country if it came to it and would do so willingly.

National Service is not Conscription.
Note, in the event of a war on our own turf Conscription would be mandatory. Conscientious objectors in WWII were viewed negatively by the general public and governmental authorities, who questioned their patriotism and bravery.

I agree the system needs cleaning up and be more transparent. As I understand it, MP's are a bit like doctors or the self-employed, who have to use their "income" to run their constituency office, employ staff etc. Personal salary should be separated from business expenses.
