Maybe once I see a self-driving car effortlessly navigate a busy, pedestrian filled intersection in the rain, I will start to feel differently. 😂

While, yes, I am aware these tools are quickly improving everyday, they still have a long way to go before they can completely replace the full skill and judgement of a creative profesional.

Despite the great AI tools now available, for most of my work I must still rely on my own hand selections and designs to achieve the look I want.

Yet try to select anything a bit more complicated and... it starts to fall apart.

In the world of design it’s much the same. Today AI can now create perfect selections in seconds, given the right conditions. Such as a well lit studio portrait and a clean background.

Yet the real world is made up of an infinite number of Edge Cases which can easily stump an AI. A self-driving car trying to navigate a 4 way intersection, with pedestrians, while raining, doesn’t do so well.

Anything which falls outside of that narrow band of possibilities is considered an "Edge Case”

This is evident in self-driving cars. In 2023 self-driving cars can safely drive 80% of the time by only operating within a narrow set of 20% of possible conditions. ✅ Highway driving ✅ Sunny weather ✅ Human oversight.

The Pareto Principle states that 80% of outcomes, are driven by just 20% of causes. In AI that means that you can build an AI which is right 80% of the time, just by focusing on a few vital factors.

In 2023 all you hear is “AI is coming for your job.” Mid-journey, Dalle 2 and Chat GPT have arrived, and will put every creative out on the street. Yet, as a Web Designer I can sum up the reason why I’m not worried in two words: Edge Cases. 🧵👇🏾
