Last night I supported a motion put forward by the opposition; to oppose the decision by the Government to remove the
#WinterFuelAllowance
. It’s important to me that Harborough Council is able to work together, cross party, if we can agree it is in the national interest.
Tonight at 7PM Tory chairman
@LeeAndersonMP_
will interview home secretary
@SuellaBraverman
on
@GBNEWS
I have put together a breakdown of all the MISLEADING STATEMENTS made by Home Secretary this week which they won’t be mentioning. If you think the public deserve the FACTS RT
I’ve got to admit I wasn’t really sure where the
#LibDems
were going prior to the General Election, I had doubts, but after the last couple of weeks? I’d follow
@EdwardJDavey
into battle. I’m so impressed by this campaign. Bold, compassionate and human!
@WestminsterWAG
“We all”? I don’t, because I don’t allow myself to get hysterical in a never ending Royal soap opera. This country ought to be bigger than one family.
Give them their privacy during a difficult time, of course, but perhaps a good start would be to actually write about the news??
I decided to join the Lib Dems because under
@EdwardJDavey
I no longer felt politically homeless. But I decided to stand because I wanted to see younger people better represented in my community. What will be, will be tomorrow. All I know is we deserve better in Harborough.
#Vote
I’m proud to announce my first election was a success & I am now a Lib Dem Councillor in the Great Bowden & Arden ward. I owe much of this to Phil & I am grateful to have been his running mate (or Buddy if you will).
Commiserations to my predecessor Barry, whom I wish the best.
Motion passed! 👏🏼
Tonight Harborough District Council voted to write to
@RishiSunak
and
@Keir_Starmer
in favour of PR and making votes fairer. I was so proud to back Cllr Woodiwiss in the video below. Every Lib Dem, Green and Labour member supported it tonight.
#ElectoralReform
For the first time ever the
@LibDems
will be standing a Candidate in all 34 seats in Harborough. An achievement no other party has managed here in this upcoming Election. It is truly amazing that every resident in the District will have an opportunity to vote Lib Dem on May 4th
Yesterday I finally became a ‘Centrist Dad’ 🧡
So I will be taking a little break from Twitter, and stepping back from some Council duties temporarily, whilst I focus on my new family.
Happy New Year to you all, especially my residents in Great Bowden & Arden, as I promise you
The local election left
@HarboroughDC
with no overall control after the Torys lost seats, but Lib Dems & opposition parties made gains.
Now an agreement has been reached between ourselves, the Greens & Labour to work together. We will be nominating Cllr Phil Knowles as leader.
The very best of luck to
@EmmaMidBeds
today. The Liberal Democrats have done us all proud with their tireless campaigning in
#MidBedfordshire
.
The people of this country need electoral reform, not back room deals.
Local Lib Dem parties need to modernise. Too much focus (pardon the pun) on leaflets, not enough on social media. Shoving the same bar charts & two horse race references through letterboxes is old hat / a waste of paper. Many members still stuck in a 90s mentality of campaigning.
I had a hand written letter of concern from an 91 year old constituent. I called her directly to discuss & she thought I was my Conservative predecessor. She was delighted to discover her ward now had 2 Lib Dem councillors. She told me she has been a ‘Liberal’ her entire life! 🧡
This is so out of touch. It’s difficult to see where Labour starts and the Conservatives end these days. Working from home isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s everything.
'One of my biggest fears in life is what happens to him when I'm gone.'
Speaking on
@ITVTonight
, Sir Ed Davey opened up about juggling responsibilities as Liberal Democrat leader and caring for his disabled teenage son |
@rachyoungeritv
reports
The Liberal Democrat leader
@EdwardJDavey
lost his father aged four. As a teenager, he nursed his dying mum. His wife, Emily, has multiple sclerosis and his son, John, 16, has a neurological disorder.
For him, politics really is personal 👇
The big question is, who are Labour and the Green Party suggesting the electorate vote for in the
#RochdaleByElection
? Indecision can only lead to the wrong decision. The grown up thing to do would be to rally around a candidate who isn’t a disgrace, for the greater good.
Absolutely extraordinary that there are still Conservative MPs who feel another unelected PM is the answer, and not a general election. This makes me so angry! Stop putting your own interests first, and serve the public who pay you to do so.
#GeneralElectionN0W
#ToryChaos
Enough is enough, I have submitted my vote of no confidence letter to the Chairman of the 1922. It is time for Rishi Sunak to go and replace him with a 'real' Conservative party leader.
@SarahDykeLD
A Tory councillor tried to make fun of my name on here leading up to the local election. He then suggested the Lib Dem support was collapsing.
I went in to take a seat off his Conservative colleague with a sizeable majority. He certainly wasn’t laughing at the count 👍🏼
The Liberal Democrats are the 3rd largest party in Parliament again after years on the sidelines. We have won our biggest number of seats in over 100 years and defied even my best expectations for
#GE24
. I joined the party last year, went on to win a local election as a Lib Dem
To overtake the SNP as the 3rd largest party in Parliament would be enormous for the
@LibDems
, but a Labour majority means electoral reform & PR aren’t likely to be on the horizon. Either way, it’s hard not to get excited over a Tory defeat of this scale.
Brilliant article by
@DavidGauke
on how the Lib Dems could become the natural political home for the liberal centre right. I wrote about this very thing earlier in the year, as I was previously a Conservative voter, as many of our supporters are.
I am looking forward to second the motion by
@darrenwoodiwiss
this coming Monday supporting Proportional Representation. The all or nothing first-past-the-post isn’t fit for purpose anymore. We must fight to ensure every voice is heard.
Yes they do, because if the Lib Dems are strictly centre-left, and not welcoming the entire centre ground, then that is an issue for people like me. I didn’t join the party seeking the home counties wing of the Labour Party.
@buddyandersonuk
The issue of re-articulating a distinctive LibDem identity is an urgent task. The Coalition very much damaged that identity amongst traditional LibDem voters. The above article tentatively starts painting a picture but we need much more definition.
The Tories have failed us on the economy, the NHS and the environment. This Thursday, I’ll be standing alongside our local party leader Cllr Phil Knowles. The choice is clear, only the
@LibDems
can beat the Conservatives in Great Bowden & Arden. Labour can’t win here.

Happy St George’s day to all who choose to call this Nation home 🏴 I have always been immensely proud to be English. Even if the breakfasts wreak havoc on my cholesterol & the football never comes home. To love where you live is a very fine thing & it should be celebrated 🤍❤️🤍
@Matt_building
@SarahDykeLD
If we want to win big then we need to show the country we are the true liberal alternative to Labour as well, as we did under Charles Kennedy. We cannot rely on disillusioned Conservative voters alone.
Paddy Ashdown was my political hero. He was a mentor and a dear friend.
Paddy would have been so proud to see the Liberal Democrats winning again in the West Country and I wish he had been there for our victory in Somerton and Frome in July.
Five years on, we still miss him.
When you think of
@DavidGauke
,
@RoryStewartUK
,
@Anna_Soubry
, or
@DominicGrieve1
for example - it’s impossible to imagine them being members of the current Conservative party. Surely David Cameron looks around the cabinet table now & wonders; whatever happened to the centre-right?
Not only did
@NeilDotObrien
’s post on Facebook attract widespread criticism from his constituents, but the petition itself has seemingly been suspended by moderators who enforce Community Guidelines. Proud to see Harborough reject scaremongering & division.
The polls have now closed. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Counting will take place in Harborough at 10:30am tomorrow and I will provide an update following this.
Another dozen seats would put us at about 27 seats, which is pretty much where current polling puts us. But that doesn’t get us back to being the third largest party, which we need if we want a voice in Parliament again. Are we being bold enough?
#LibDems
Wishing all my followers a pleasant Bank Holiday. Particularly to those who can call themselves ‘Councillor’ for the first time, as I did almost exactly one year ago. Politics can be brutal and toxic, but it can also be the place where we stand tall.
#LocalElections
Thanks
@NeilDotObrien
for the making sure the homeless are “moved on” from Market Harborough. No mention of this unfortunate man being offered any help? Gobsmacked.
I attended the
#VEDay
Ceremony in Market Harborough Square with Cllr Phil Knowles & Cllr Barbara Johnson this morning. Barbara being the first woman president of the Harborough branch of the Royal British Legion.
We will remember them.
The Liberal Democrats are an extremely diverse party. We will always strive for a more inclusive country, not just in June, but year round.

is an opportunity to reflect on not just how far we’ve come, but how much further there still is to go on achieving equality.
A real honour to do a reading at
@GtBowdenChurch
tonight. I can honestly say me and my family had a truly lovely evening enjoying Carols by Candlelight. The service
@HilsCorcoran
organised ran so beautifully, and the Choir were fantastic.

Once again I can confirm that my name, on Harborough MP Neil O’Brein’s list of ‘councillors who are planning to vote for the increase’ is a fabrication. Until I’ve heard the debate, I won’t make up my mind on how to vote. I have never said otherwise and won’t predetermine a vote.
I'm aware of another e-mail sent on Friday stating I intend to vote for the housing increase. This is not true and predetermination of an upcoming vote is a serious allegation. I won't be making up my mind on how to vote until I've heard the full debate at the next full Council.
Labour Vs Liberal Democrats:
Coincidentally, there are 67 seats where the Lib Dems are projected to finished ahead of Labour, who are projected to finish ahead in 564.
I don't smoke and won't ever smoke.
But fundamentally people have to be free to make their own choices on issues like this.
On the health argument - what's next, banning sugar? Alcohol? (we saw how that worked) Sports?
I would like to congratulate
@NeilDotObrien
on winning another term as our MP. However, the voters have sent you a humbling message; Harborough, Oadby & Wigston is no longer a Conservative safe seat. Take heed, work with all Councillors, and let’s do our best for the District.
@MimiJ9
@TheStephenRalph
I think this expectation that Lib Dems must stand aside for Labour, when they would never do the same, is ludicrous. People have the right to vote for the party of their choice & it’s the archaic FPTP that’s failing the electorate. Labour want tactical voting when it suits them.
I stand with the innocent civilians of Israel and Palestine caught up in another senseless war. I’m also thinking of anyone who has faced anti-semitism or islamophobia as a result.
All this suffering and sorrow, for what?
Yes I’d also like to know why the Harborough MP is telling residents I have predetermined how I am going to vote, despite the fact I have not made up my mind yet?
@NeilDotObrien
I have just been informed by a local resident that you have stated in a letter to them of my intention to vote for the SOCG in HDC. As I have not yet made a decision I would appreciate it if you would retract such letter immediately!

MP.
“If you're a minister, that means you can't take a job for six months. There are a lot of people who are looking right now to the other side of the election. What if they want a job after a Tory defeat?” -
@SamCoatesSky
As promised I’m starting 2024 by being seen more in my community. Tonight I attended the Arden Neighbourhood Forum in Market Harborough. Although I didn’t have much to say, I had plenty to listen to, which is far more important.
Thank you Liz Truss for proving a very good point: If the House of Lords cannot reform and become an elected chamber, it must be abolished. The fact state funded privilege is still either hereditary, or dished out by the elite, is archaic and embarrassing.
@PoliticsPollss
@LeylandCacti
I am surprised people are more concerned with rubber dinghies turning up in Kent, then they are about paying their bills, putting food on the table, or getting medical treatment!? I’d have thought small boats would be a bigger concern if the NHS and the economy wasn’t such a mess
👨🏼🦱 £175 raised for

A big thank you to all who donated. A few special mentions to my

I’m getting very weary of the constant ‘14 years’ argument 🥱 Sorry but they are not the same Governments/Parliaments in my view. VERY unpopular opinion, but Cameron and May did their best.
The current one (since 2019) has been diabolical, and we need to get rid. Focus on that!
@CllrFinan
@NeilDotObrien
Apparently it went down like a led balloon with his constituents in Market Harborough judging by the overwhelming majority of comments…
Jo you would have been fantastic and my heart goes out to you, and any Lib Dem candidate who didn’t win a seat today. You have shown nothing but dignity and grace.
I didn't win my seat today, but I'm delighted with the results. Congratulations to
@buddyandersonuk
and
@joash1075
on your win today.
Also best of luck to
@darrenwoodiwiss
on your well-earned result today. The tories got trounced. That was my aim. Job done.
@TheStephenRalph
@MimiJ9
If Labour agree to back PR & formulate a tactical agreement between the 2 parties, then fine. But why are we always expected to stand aside for them, but never the other way around? We don’t exist just to help Labour win a majority. We’re a political party with our own ambitions.
That soldier is my Great-Grandfather Albert Jefferys, and the little boy was my Great-Uncle Brian. This photo was a source of enormous pride on my Mother’s side of our family. Especially to my Great-Grandmother Phoebe, who I’ll always miss.

The
@LibDems
particularly want former Tory voters to choose them this time around. It’s an integral part of their campaign, asking the disillusioned centre-right to vote for them in the blue wall.
They need their votes, but are the centre-right welcome in the party as members?
We lost a great champion for social liberalism nine years ago! Charles Kennedy was a tireless advocate for liberty, social justice and internationalism. He led the
@LibDems
to their best ever result, winning 62 seats in 2005. But above all, he was a kind, decent & honourable man!
