My family and I live in Rustic Canyon and are devastated by the loss and destruction. Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors. At the moment, the fire has been halted three homes from ours, but who knows how long that will last. We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and support we’ve received from friends who’ve been reaching out. Thank you so very much.

A lot of musicians will talk about the impact John Mayall had on their careers, but John had a profound impact on my career in film. In the early 70s, he became buddies with my dad Skip, a completely strait laced PE teacher at Miliken Jr High in North Hollywood. I had loved going to the movies from as far back as I can remember and John shared this passion and more importantly, recognized it in me. One time when I was 7, John asked if he could take me on an all day movie marathon on Hollywood Blvd. For some crazy reason, my parents obliged. John picked me up at Studio City little league at noon and drove me to Hollywood Blvd where we crisscrossed the street until 2 am- our day ended with a midnight double bill of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Where’s Poppa? I was 7, he was 45 but both of us were hooked. John had this tiny 16mm screening room/closet at his home in Laurel Canyon, basically a red bed in a tiny room with a projector. I was too young to understand why the room just had a bed but at the time I thought it was mind blowing. When I’d go to his house, he’d screen me endless reels of Little Rascals and Three Stooges films. At that age, no one had recognized or commented on my love of cinema. But John did and encouraged me. I am forever grateful for his friendship and guidance at such a formative age.
