Grateful. As the 91st General Assembly was gaveled in this morning and I had the honor of taking the oath of office, I felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent the people of Story and Marshall Counties in the Iowa House of Representatives. It’s a weighty responsibility to sit in that chamber in our beautiful and historic capitol and be entrusted with the future of a state that I love. It was also special to share the moment with friends and family (near and far) and to take my oath of office using my grandmother’s Bible from 1929.

One great thing about my legislative listening posts is that people can stop by, tell me about their issue, and continue on with their day. I appreciate everyone who stopped by Sweet Oaks in Collins to visit with me this morning! We talked a lot about ag and rural representation on county boards of supervisors.

“I got diagnosed with cancer today”, says Ava Jones in an Instagram video that she made on February 4, which is World Cancer Day. Ava’s just a sophomore in college but already has endured a lifetime’s worth of pain. A star basketball player recruited by Iowa, she and her family were hit by a car during her senior year of high school. Her father died, and Ava’s injuries forced her to retire from basketball. Now Ava has another fight in front of her. Wikipedia tells me that 88% of people diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma will live 5 years or longer. And people diagnosed under the age of 20 (which is close to Ava’s age) have a 97% survival rate. She’s got Hawkeye nation, and a whole lot more behind her.

95% By the time your child turns 18, you've spent ~95% of the time you will ever spend with them in your lifetime. There are specific windows—much shorter than you care to imagine or admit—during which certain people and relationships will occupy your life. You may have only one more summer with all of your siblings, two more trips with that old group of friends, a few more years with your wise old aunt, a handful of encounters with that coworker you love, or one more long walk with your parents.
