Work: Bantam Tools
@bantamtools
creating desktop CNC milling machines with reliability and precision for world changers and skill builders. Play: pen plotters.
I really like
@piterpasma
's work. It took a bit to get Geomorphism
#125
to plot. Used nearly all of the ink in the pen, about 1.5km of ink. Ran it slow to get great line quality so it took 48 hours of plotting.
Delightful evening last night in the Harold Cohen show at the
@whitneymuseum
showing the
@bantamtools
ArtFrame Art Machine System for the first time drawing Aaron drawings. So many great conversations.
So in prep for my talk about art and machines with
@artmatrco
today, I'm going to share some past work in this thread. My work falls into two categories... 1 is art making and 2 is art infrastructure making. Let's do art making first and then infrastructure second.
Thrilled to share this interview with
@bre
today! It's been a while since we have had a collector interview and this was such a fun & surprising conversation. A great listen for any that are gearing up to travel for the holidays!
At the
@whitneymuseum
checking in on the
@bantamtools
Art Frame Art Machine Systems. The larger of the two has made 1289 drawings so far. I estimate there is an average of 5 meters of drawing in each one so we are at more than 6 kilometers of drawing so far.
Plotted my Charcoal Seeds

by
@zancan
. My plotter is optimized for G2 pens and I used silver for the charcoal lines and blue for the white lines. I need creamier paper and try again because white ink on white paper made them invisible. Dimensions are 6”x6”.

@WilliamOsman
Bre here, Bantam Tools CEO. We’ve reached out to William to try to make things right. There’s been a lot of attention on this. I didn’t really understand the event or how we would fit into it, so I sent an employee. We finished a prototype and were excited to share it and at that
If you are an artist at
#abmarfa23
and have svg files to plot, come on over to the artblocks gallery and we will plot them on the high speed Bantam Tools Pen Plotter Prototype.
Announcing the acquisition of Evil Mad Scientist by Bantam Tools. Dr. Windell Oskay & Lenore Edman will be joining as CTO & COO of Bantam Tools in Peekskill NY. Pen plotter enthusiasts can look forward to a new generation of art machines in Spring 2024.
When launching a product, it's important to have photos that show how big the product is in relationship to a person. Here are

with the Bantam Tools NextDraw™ 8511, 1117, and 2234 models.
In
@piterpasma
’s universal rayhatcher you can go into params and change the line width and it adds exceptional details and changes the perspective resulting in unexpected compositions like this one with these amazing details that look like flowing water.
Art Show! I will be participating in the Peekskill Open Studios June 3-4 and showcasing the work I’ve been doing with pen plotters utilizing an AI GAN trained to make new work based on my own blind contour drawings from 2002.
One of the conversations that came up during our plotter study session was that p5js doesn’t have an easy svg output for artists like processing does. I’d like to support that endeavor.
New series I’ve created using a GAN based on a dataset of my 2002 machine drawings and have been plotting during the open studios exhibition: Backyard Spaceships.
Very excited to announce this partnership. This is the best solution for training up and learning the industry standard Fanuc controls and not having to deal with the giant footprint of industrial machinery. Bonus is that the Bantam Tools Desktop CNC is running Fanuc High Power
Doing research on the different approaches to CoreXY implementation & gotta give a shoutout to the
@Voron_Design
team who have done an exceptional job of creating an awesome build manual. Their designs are ultra creative and their manual is lighthearted and playful.
In this delightful
@whitneymuseum
video, you can see some beautiful glamour shots of the
@BantamTools
ArtFrame Art Machine System creating artworks manifested by Harold Cohen’s AI named Aaron.
@artmatrco
Here are some plotter portraits I made of friends. The process is that I scan them, clean them up in meshmixer, position and light them in Blender, output all the creases and edges and assemble them in Inkscape. They are plotted on HP 7550 plotters.
I'm now on
@zero________one
and published my first piece. I got it set up with particle and am not really understanding the wallet mechanics, but full speed ahead. Also this is a PNG. Plottable SVGs were not allowed for uploading.
@artmatrco
Here are some abstract works I created at that time as well. I developed a way with
@lasern
to use G2 pens in the old plotters but they required that I run the pens down to fit. These works were created as abstract works that would also run the ink out.
I love
@piterpasma
's yip & yap series. Click "open" under any one of the artworks and you add &lw=.1 to the end of the url, it will change it from a postcard drawing to a poster sized drawing. I can watch these artworks render for hours. (plottable too!)

Now I'm deep into large format plotting. I've put together a generative adversarial network drawing on my own dataset of my blind contour drawings from 2002 of naked people and heavy machinery. It's fun having computer make new drawings in my own style.
This little video represents the art I made by training runwayml and stabile diffusion on my own art and then prompting it to make new art. For example, I made it make spaceships but it only had my drawings of construction equipment for reference and then I plotted it on a
Today's Daffodil Celebration 8 was created in the field with the flowers still in the ground. The background is blown out because of sunlight. The stalks are glitching out. NFT in comments.
I've struggled with programming generative art the way I see it in my head because I've never been able to get over the hump with programming. I worked with ChatGPT to make the scribbles inspired by my child's drawings and I'm very pleased with the results.
Harold Cohen have this lecture in 1980. He described his journey from 1972 to 1980 of making paintings and then drawings with a computer. As an artist and collector of computer art, it is very inspiring.
One of the nice things about sxswi back in the day before social media marketing swept over it, was that it was the gathering point of lots of the creative people on the internet. Here is a bunch of videobloggers charging up. Every one of these folks was at the edge and continued

Theme: I met artist Vera Molnar a few years ago and she talked about creating art to surprise and delight yourself. I am most attracted to art that has clear intention without outcome. I think I am most attracted to people who have clear intentions without attachment to outcome.
So happy and honored!!!

AI landscape painted in a pen plotter with oil and graphite / paper. 20 x 20 cm.
Been thinking about style and taste development. I’m on my second iteration of training AI on my own drawings and then having it make more drawings like my own. Here is a plot of one of my original drawings of a farm all tractor.

Theme: Watching others use your infrastructure for their own success is deeply rewarding. I suspect that in every industry there are infrastructure builders. Who are the infrastructure builders in your neighborhood? In your industry?
I’m 2008 we couldn’t get into the google party so we put the word out about a fake Altavista relaunch party. It ended up getting packed. There were speeches made.

. I like this platform. You contribute art to get credits to get art. New images made with machine learning trained on a dataset of blind contour figure drawings I made in 2002.
I’ll be out and about in NYC this week with physical manifestations (aka photos) of the Daffodil Celebrations project. If you see me and you’ve collected them I’ll give you one!
Updated stl-to-svg to make it more usable, probably last edit for a while. It now supports OBJ, basic axis corrections and a quick hack to get rid of smallest faces in the mesh.
Camera navigation still clunky and specific to my use case, sorry. 😅
Wow… well, what a way to end the longest day! I received an offer of 256

@bre
Thank you 🙏 although it pains me to see a new name against it… 😬 🌗
This is my favorite article about the Harold Cohen: Aaron show because it puts Harold Cohen’s AI in context and while contrasting and connecting to the issues surrounding contemporary art AI. So good. Well done Sarp Karem Yavuz.

Theme: Creativity helps us discover ourselves. Rooted in my teaching days, I saw students express themselves to explore who they are by what they create. We need more self discovery in the world & I believe art making & creative expression is the best way to discover ourselves.
