@MatthewEvison1 @LungCheck @CureProjectMCR @hsbalata Primary prevention embedded in the screening process, rather than deferring to another time, is key to the success, cost effective service and maximising mortality reduction - quite simply, it’s just the right thing to do

@lungradiologist @jacobscolin1 @hsbalata It’s the way excel drew it! Bottom line is an approximate 20% reduction in late stage disease within 2 years and after two rounds of annual screening. We didn’t screen in 2018 as the pilot stopped but have just completed screening all 36 GP practices in North Manchester in 19/20

First insights into the effect of targeted lung cancer screening in Manchester in 2016-2017. The rapid rise in early stage lung cancer is now well appreciated, but the progressive decrease in stage III/ IV disease within 2 years has huge implications

@_johnedwards @LungConsultant @RCP_NLCA I’m curious how detecting a cancer before visible on CT is helpful? Totally appreciate advantages of early diagnosis but how does this help a patient? How as a profession do we embrace this, manage expectation and provide meaningful clinical management?

@BTOGORG PS Rake et al paper about mesothelioma, but key information re-exposure by occupation remains a relevant observation

@BTOGORG more likely shipbuilders, plumbers, joiners etc - how much of their risk is related to concomitant smoking, a bigger driver than asbestos alone. Manchester programme counts 25% those at risk as having asbestos exposure - so will be included.

@BTOGORG Few more thoughts - Is lung cancer a major public health problem in firefighters? Whilst asbestos is a risk, HSE has very tight controls on occupational exposure for 50+ years and indeed paper by Rake et al doesn’t indicate firefighters are amongst those at greatest risk -
