I’ve known
@abdaniellesmith
for a long time. We were both opposition leaders in
#ableg
. I debated her many times. She has ALWAYS been about privatizing health care. It’s her passion and her priority. Anyone who believes she’s changed her tune now is being played for a sucker.
Smith should resign! Her cuts to firefighting resources, and general climate denial have contributed to this disaster. Her government is perhaps the most irresponsible in Alberta history. And no
@ABDanielleSmith
, you don’t get to blame
@JustinTrudeau
for this one.
Don’t blame the UCP for the Suncor layoffs. Blame technology and world oil markets. Blame the UCP for lying about being able avoid it. Neither tax cuts or a war room will change this trajectory. It’s just that the
@albertaNDP
would have better prepared Alberta for the future.
Emergency alert? We’ve had cold weather in the past? What’s changed? The power grid can’t handle a few cold days in a row? This is Alberta and this is winter! If you are awake to what’s happened this last 4 years you know there is more to this than cold weather!
I no longer live in Alberta, so I can’t vote for
@RachelNotley
and the
@albertaNDP
today. I’d appreciate it if someone would step up and do it instead. Any takers?
The first time I met
@ABDanielleSmith
, I was a new
@albertaNDP
leader being interviewed by the Calgary Herald editorial board of which Smith was a member. She was very fixated on private health care models. That was in 2004, nearly 20 years ago. Nothing has changed.
What is wrong with
@ABDanielleSmith
? A major reason for the lawsuit against
@CBCNews
was to provide her a reason to refuse to answer questions about her call with Pawlowski. Yet on she jabbers, coming up with her fifth explanation so far. Her staff must be going nuts!
#ableg
UCP positions impacting the Jasper fire situation: 1) Climate change denial 2) Cutting public services 3) Hostility to the federal government. All are contrary to the interests of Albertans. Their convergence in this case made a bad situation much worse.
Congratulations to
@RachelNotley
on your time as
@albertaNDP
leader. Your leadership took the party to unprecedented heights, and changed Alberta politics forever. Thank you.
You may have noticed a lot more
@BrianJeanAB
around lately. It’s because the UCP desperately needs a spokesperson who isn’t
@ABDanielleSmith
. But minus a few of her whackadoodle ideas, he is very much from the same mold. Vote
@albertaNDP
to restore common sense to Alberta.
Rachel Notley and her federal bosses are working hard to make life more expensive over the coming decade:
Clean fuel standards
Net Zero 2035
Carbon tax increases
and don't forget risking 1/4 of Albertans good paying jobs with "Just Transition"
#abvotes
Let me put this in terms conservatives might understand. It’s about private property. Houseless people have possessions. Things they’ve managed to hold on to from a former life or stuff they need they’ve picked up along the way. They can’t keep their property in a shelter. ../2
In Alberta, we believe recovery is possible!
Our government is determined to help our most vulnerable get out of dangerous encampments, run by organized crime, and into warm, clean, and safe spaces that allow them a new pathway to get their lives back.
Some folks are suggesting Smith will be gone fairly soon. I don’t necessarily agree. Her performance in the debate and the win bought her some time. But once she starts saying stupid things again, the clock will start ticking. It feels almost inevitable, doesn’t it?
Today I am announcing that I will be running for the UCP in the next election. I am so deeply moved by the political consistency displayed by
@ABDanielleSmith
and
@RajSherman
, that I want to follow their example. Stay tuned for the constituency... when I figure it out.
#ableg
When they are forced into shelters, they lose their possessions. When the cops roust them from their camps, they take their possessions. People in shelters are forced back onto the streets every morning. You’ve taken their homes. And you’re taking their dignity. Shame!
Half of the UCP caucus is in Danielle Smith’s cabinet. Why? Cabinet members are subject to the cabinet solidarity rule and must support government decisions (and the premier). They also get a 50% pay rise. It’s all about control of the caucus. /2
Q1. Why the emergency alert? A fee reasons, extreme cold and maintenance among them. The primary policy reason is that the UCP abandoned the ‘Capacity Market’ which payed power producers for maintaining surplus capacity in case of extra high demand (like the last few days). /2
It’s very doubtful that the organizers will reach the threshold. That’s not the point. This is about building a right wing organization to replace the current mayor and much of council in the next election. The signatures are crucial data for this effort.
BREAKING: The City of Calgary has received notice of a recall petition against Mayor Jyoti Gondek. The petitioner has 60 days (Feb. 5-April 4) to gather signatures. 514,284 signatures are required to recall the mayor.
Here’s the thing.
@ABDanielleSmith
is the leader of
@Alberta_UCP
. If they are re-elected, she will continue as the Premier of Alberta. Whatever their door knockers try to tell you, a vote for your local UCP candidate is a vote for
@ABDanielleSmith
!
UCP door knockers show up. Ask if they can count on our vote for
@prasadpandayyc
. I said no, for all voters in our house. No problem with Prasad, it's a party issue. Their response: we're hearing this everywhere.

The police leadership need to have some tough conversations about what being unsafe is or is not.
Being criticized does not make you unsafe.
Marginalizing members of the public as "protesters" and dismissing their criticisms as a threat is systemic racism when not applied =ly.
No surprise. After nearly 40 years as a subscriber, I cancelled my subscription over a Malcolm Mayes cartoon where a farmer threw a pitchfork into Rachel Notley’s back over Bill 3. It was the last straw. Mayes has produced many more mysoginistic cartoons since.
Technology, including electricity storage, is forging ahead. Alberta was a leader in renewables investment. The UCP moratorium will leave Alberta behind, and will likely contribute to power shortages in the future.
This was apparently because their system was cheaper. Which leads to Q 2: why does Alberta have the highest power prices in Canada? 2 reasons. First the UCP abandoned the rate cap on residential power that the NDP put in place, and second, they allow ‘economic withholding’../3
@ABDanielleSmith
@JustinTrudeau
For all the knuckle-dragging, koolade-drinking, mendacious apparatchiks out there who claim that the UCP did not cut fire fighting budgets, I recommend this excellent thread:
#Ableg
🔥 🧵
Alberta is on fire.
Alberta had one of the BEST wildfire programs in the world until 2019.
Despite MULTIPLE warnings, the
@Alberta_UCP
cut TENS of MILLIONS from firefighting programs.
We’re now seeing the consequences
Let’s review 6 MAJOR UCP wildfire cuts!
@TheBreakdownAB
Even if, what’s going to be the problem? They can’t vote for anyone but a solid NDP candidate. This was always the flaw in David Parker’s blovations.
...which allows power companies to cut production to create a shortage, thereby increasing the price. And their profits too, of course. Q 3. What about the future? Renewables are the future, despite some shortcomings today. World investment in renewables is massive. /4
Is the UCP conducting a push-poll in Calgary? Polling currently underway asks “The NDP is planning to introduce legislation that will increase electricity prices by 40%. How will this affect your vote?” (Paraphrase) This is not only false, but will give a wildly skewed result.
@acoyne
Have you read either one? The first explains commodity production and the mechanisms of capitalism The second is a manifesto of racial superiority and a guide to conquest and genocide. Write about what you know.
I turned off the presidential debate. I couldn’t watch. Biden has obvious dementia and is really struggling. How can people be expected to vote for him? Why didn’t the DNC intervene before now? They have failed the American people.
Ultimately, I think the debate marked the turning point. Smith calmed the CONSERVATIVE voters who were wavering because of the NDP campaign. That was clearly the UCP strategy, and she executed it well. If the NDP had a strategy for the debate, it was not apparent to me.
My take in a nutshell: NDP initially had a very successful negative campaign against Smith. Smith did very well in the debate and successfully reduced conservative voters anxiety about her, taking the wind out of the sails of the NDP campaign. /2
Yes, this morning on 630CHED radio program, our illustrious Premier managed to turn the tragedy of two fallen police officers into a grotesque political campaign and, to top it off, announced their funeral without family and Edmonton police consent.

.So Global, why don’t you do your job and find out? Wait, I know. 🙋🏽♀️ It’s more convenient (politically and otherwise) to just report the calculated musings of our legally challenged Premier.
@albertaNDP
What’s the plan Jagmeet? Here are a couple of suggestions. 1) end foreign ownership of Canadian media, including hedge funds that focus on cost cutting at the expense of journalism, 2) break up media monopolies like Bell and Post Media.
The news of more cuts and layoffs today at Bell and CTV is devastating.
We need journalists to keep Canadians informed and to hold the powerful to account.
@stormbringer420
.So, you want to buy your way to the front of the line? That makes you kind of a dick in my books, but you can still do it. It’s perfectly legal. You just have to pay for it. All of it. NO public money. Out on your own, just as you like it.
Grim. Not one of the candidates for Alberta NDP leadership had a single word to say in their debate today about the violent police responses against student protests in Calgary and Edmonton.
@ryanjespersen
@JLisaYoung
I completely disagree. Context matters. Offensive flags displayed by obnoxious jerks honking horns in other people’s neighbourhoods vs. a healthcare worker’s quiet protest against a politician who’s attacked her calling and invaded her work place to lie about it. No comparison.
A perfect day on the doors in Edmonton-Centre with the fabulous

Give Trisha a follow, friends! And join us doorknocking soon! ✊🧡

I’ve been critical of
@albertaNDP
‘s communication efforts for some time. I haven’t changed my mind - more on that another time. They emphasized organization this time and it was responsible for salvaging several wins last night in Banff-Cochrane and Calgary.
There were less ‘former PC voters’ than expected. Having spent lots of time with dozens of PC MLAs over the years, I can say that many of them are quite comfortable with Danielle Smith. Many of the rest were hanging with the
@AlbertaParty
, and the
@albertaNDP
did get their vote.
I’m not sure what impact the NDPs “shift to the right” had on the campaign. It didn’t move a lot of vote away from the UCP for sure. Did left NDP voters stay home? I remain to be convinced. But the strategy should be carefully reviewed.

Interviewing your subject’s political opponents is not “fact checking”. Having an unbiased researcher/journalist take a series of statements made by your subject, research their factualness and present the findings is actual fact checking.
@LukaszukAB
@ABDanielleSmith
Harper doesn’t mention
@ABDanielleSmith
. No surprise there, she’s dragging her party down. But also no mention of the
@Alberta_UCP
. They must be polling so poorly that he thought it would damage their chances. Encouraging!
Jagmeet Singh was supposed to be the NDP's answer to Justin Trudeau. Instead, as he just showed with his carbon tax surrender, he's become their version of Pierre Poilievre.

I had a wonderful time visiting with the University of Alberta Conservatives last night. Thank you for inviting me.

I couldn’t agree more. If the NDP doesn’t up its comms game immediately, they will lose the election in May. There’s too much at stake to keep fumbling around. Clearly, they need outside help.

Not useless. When you run wind and solar, you can turn off backup plants and save on fuel and carbon emissions. But you’re right, with large capacity storage, we can make great reductions in the use of fossil fuels for power production.
Today, I am pleased to endorse
@KathleenGanley
for leader of the
@albertaNDP
. Kathleen has the intelligence, experience and passion to lead the party to victory against the UCP in the next election. Check out https//:
Did the Democrats pull a “bait and switch” on the Republicans? It seems to be proceeding like clockwork, beginning right after the Republican convention. Reminds me of a ju-jitsu move.
It’s fascinating to see how so many conservatives have become militant anti-nazis - now that they realize there’s an opportunity to beat Trudeau with that club.
This is why we need the
@albertaNDP
to be linked to the federal
@NDP
. The federal party forced the govt to bring a national pharmacare program. Now
@albertaNDP
must fight for AB to join.
In my comments, I made 3 substantive criticisms of the NDP campaign: 1. Poor comms, 2. No apparent debate strategy, 3. Leaning right strategy failed to get anticipated results and needs to be reviewed.
Canadian media is owned by US hedge funds. Harper and Trudeau have both refused to address this. We must not tolerate US monopoly control of our media. Break up the media monopolies, restore competition, and return ownership to Canadians.
@TheBreakdownAB
This thread is ridiculous. It may come as a surprise to The Breakdown, but lots of union leaders support the NDP and play an active role. They are absolutely correct to call Nenshi on his union busting. You should address that, rather than this phoney gotcha pseudo-journalism.
Based on this information, I believe the Opposition may have the grounds to raise a point of privilege against the Ethics Commissioner - which is a serious matter.
What is going on in Alberta?
The "Ethics" Commissioners office has said that spousal property is not subject to the conflict of interest act. That is patently false.
Here are two of the relevant sections of the Conflicts of Interest Act.
@CathyOlliffeWeb
I don’t mind the term, any more than younger people mind being called millenials. But it’s sometime used in a pejorative, ageist way eg: ‘OK Boomer’.
This is a substantive and very positive initiative. It will make a meaningful difference in Albertan’s lives. Well done
@RachelNotley
and
@albertaNDP

NEW:
Alberta NDP announce the Save Albertans Money Act would be their Bill 1, targeting utilities, insurance, tuition etc.
They would also repeal the Sovereignty Act with Bill 2, and protect the Canada Pension Plan with Bill 3.

This is a slam dunk case for resignation. If we let things like this go, the bar for resigning will continue to rise, and the quality of Cabinet minister will continue to fall.
I just canceled my trip to Canada.
I just can’t…
It’s beyond the pale.
Trudeau’s tyranny against peaceful trucker protesters seems insignificant to this despicable and outrageous act of honoring of one of ADOLF HITLER’S NAZI SS Soldiers by the Canadian Parliament.
No words…
@atypicalalbertn
I can’t believe this! What happened to our “progressive” councillors? This is what happens when a weak council allows the city manager to “wag the dog”.
