All this began to change in the 1960s. The political leadership, ravaged the defence industrial base & demanded significant defence cuts.

RCAF Namao was built in the early 1950s to support US bombers and Canadian fighters. It had one of the longest runways in the Commonwealth and was an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle.

In the mid 1990s the Air Force was directed to vacate the base and the Army was instructed to move from Calgary (which would close) and take over the installation.

Canada has incredibly capable military personnel. They’ve become expert at making do with less and leveraging their training to arrive at solutions that would stymie other forces.
They can’t fix the underlying issues, though.
