As a professional soldier, I’ll just throw out there that if you’re *deliberately* (note the emphasis) targeting civilians, taking hostages, & employing indiscriminate weapons, that’s a war crime, no matter the motivation.
There’s no “but” behind this, so I don’t want to hear it
I’m seeing calls for Canada to further ramp up our military aid to Ukraine, in keeping with the large commitments made by our major allies.
It’s time for an unfortunate dose of reality.

My apologies to any followers who’ve noticed a change in my tone over the past while.
But I’ve had enough. Enough of the Freedumbers, QAnon, MAGA, Vatniks, Musk fanboys, neo-Nazis, and other trash that now populate this site.
I’m staying but I’m not gonna be polite anymore.
An old soldier here:
Don’t take first reports as gospel. The Russians are releasing video as an influence op. Don’t fall for it.
There’s a huge difference between a “mobility kill” and a “catastrophic kill”. In the former, the crew survives and the vehicle can be repaired.

* Being a veteran doesn’t make you special
* Being a veteran doesn’t mean your opinions carry more weight
* Being a veteran doesn’t mean wider society owes you *anything*
* Being a veteran doesn’t give you special insight on every issue
* Maybe you’re *wrong*…
A couple of us were batting around an idea.
NAFO has done amazing work countering Russian disinformation.
The Canadian Armed Forces accounts here are swamped with people spreading outright lies, disinformation and attacks on the institution.

‘s frustration dealing with well-meaning commentators on military issues - in this case the apparent deployment of T-54/55s
If my bio doesn’t outline my bona fides on these things, maybe this will help. Bonus points if you can name the type of tank.
Canadians:
I’m you begging with tears in my eyes to look at the international situation & to pay *serious adult* attention to defence issues.
For the love of God, we’re a G7 nation with global interests with over 40m people, many of whom are immigrants. Start acting like it!
This weirdo decided to pop up on my timeline, call me names on an old post, then blocked me when I engaged. He’s a “pureblood”, of course.
Imagine being so insecure that you have to wear “combat veteran” on your jacket.
@realPatLemay
Our allies around the world are waking up and finally realizing what the “peace dividend” did to our defence capabilities.
Ottawa obviously has not and we seemed destined to be - yet again - a day late and a dollar short.
I hope I’m wrong.

I’m not here for a high follower account & went for years with very few.
But I’ve noticed over the last week or so that I’m shedding followers & have gained none. Zero.
This the opposite of the pattern over the last six months & makes me wonder if anyone else is seeing this.
In the latter, there are casualties & the vehicle is destroyed.
It can be hard to tell which is which from a video.
This is *high intensity* warfare. Expect casualties, but hope for the best. There were mobility kills on M1s in Iraq & on vehs in Afg. This is no different

I’m done with it. I’m done with the false equivalence, the “both sides”, the “opposing viewpoints”, and the “everyone is entitled to an opinion”.
Maple MAGA, Convoyers, separatists and their ilk are *traitors* in the literal, classical sense, with all that means.
Operation Fire Support
(NAFO Semi-Classified)
SITUATION
Canadian official military accounts and accounts of allies are being swamped with disinformation and trolling. Most of these trolls support Putin and other causes diametrically opposed to what NAFO stands for.
It seems we need a group that bands together to counter this, like NAFO with the Russians. Indeed, much of this junk directly supports Putin.
Is there any interest in this?
We’d post memes, cool pics, & insults - like our NAFO inspiration - using a hashtag to call in support.
WHY WILL UKRAINE DISAPPEAR? BECAUSE NOBODY NEEDS IT
1. Europe doesn’t need Ukraine. The forced support of the Nazi regime, by the American mentor’s order, has put Europeans into a financial and political inferno. All for the sake of bandera’s unterukraine, that even the snobby,
For a brief period following the Second World War, Canada actually demonstrated a commitment to defence. We had a powerful military, with aircraft carriers, complete fighter wings, a forward based army, and a significant defence industrial base.

@KSAnimalRescue
Here’s my best advice as a veteran: the only person who will be able to affect things is the commander on the ground: Rear Adm. Peter Vasely. Have you tried talking to him face to face? At this stage, it might be the only thing that works.
Everything else is noise.
I received this in the mail direct from Kyiv yesterday. It’s a little hunk of Vatnik T-72 destroyed in the initial Russian attack. It’s serialized and the QR links to pics of the actual tank!
Thanks to
@NosterJan
! Link to where to get yours in the next post!
Canada has *no* ground based air defence capability.
Canada has *no* man portable anti tank missiles.
AFAIK, Canada has *no* anti-shipping capability.
Canada has a mixed fleet of used tanks that have needed significant upgrades to be effective.
12/x
We designed and built our own combat aircraft and virtually every major system was built in Canada, albeit under license.
All this began to change in the 1960s. The political leadership, ravaged the defence industrial base & demanded significant defence cuts.
3/x
Canada soon ceased to have an independent defence construction capability and could no longer produce major weapons systems itself.
Worse, the Canadian military was soon a shadow of itself and subjected to “management” experimentation by the political leadership.
4/x
We no longer have the capability to produce Canadian designed weapons.
We no longer can license produce systems designed by other countries.
We no longer have reserve stocks of most weapons systems.
We have discarded our ability to mass produce ammunition.
11/x
I had a quick look this morning at the US classified documents apparently leaked as reported by the New York Times.
A couple of things stood out:
* numbers appeared to be altered in favour of Russia
* the classification was far too high with too many caveats for a briefing
I said I’d stay to the bitter end, but my time here is hanging by a thread.
The toxicity, the lack of oversight, & the hijacking of Xitter by the *worst* elements in society have led me to take a long break to reevaluate.
I’m not sure I have the will to fight it out anymore.
Canada began cashing in the “peace dividend” long before there was one. Our presence in Europe dwindled & the forces at home were subjected to massive cuts.
This was accelerated in the 1990s, with cuts to infrastructure, support trades, strategic reserves of equipment, etc.
5/x
Our ability to militarily support Ukraine now approaches zero. The cupboard - such as it is - is bare.
There’s no sense of urgency surrounding defence issues in Canada. Indeed there hasn’t been since the early 1960s & I see no change forthcoming for the foreseeable future.
14/x
RCAF Namao was built in the early 1950s to support US bombers and Canadian fighters. It had one of the longest runways in the Commonwealth and was an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle.
7/x
This resulted in some very short sighted decisions, all based on the assumption that the military was no longer really needed and that defence was a *waste* of resources better expended elsewhere.
A case in point can be found at the Army’s base in Edmonton.
6/x
Just as stupid, DND ripped up the rail link to the base and its large supply depot at the south end.
So what? When we deployed tanks to Kandahar, we had to *drive* them to a commercial rail head on the other side of Edmonton.
This shortsightedness extends across the CAF.
10/x
DND promptly decommissioned the runway and promptly built buildings to house the Army on the runway’s north end. When we tried to reactivate it in 2002 to support our Afghanistan operations, we were told it couldn’t be done.
9/x
This is just scratching the surface.
The recent defence update outlined a few initiatives to address these and other deficiencies, but *extended over 20 years*!
Moreover, we are buying some equipment - but only for our troops in Latvia.
13/x
In the mid 1990s the Air Force was directed to vacate the base and the Army was instructed to move from Calgary (which would close) and take over the installation.
Orders being orders, this was accomplished in fairly short order, albeit with incredible short-sightedness.
8/x
So, after hearing from MAGA all afternoon what a “pussy” and snowflake I am, their fearless leader drops a block first….🤔
#NAFOExpansionIsNonNegotiable
This smells of a classic Russian disinfo op - publishing “official” documents that have been subtly altered to twist their meaning. They’ve been doing this since the 60s or earlier.
*Don't fall for it*
Unpopular hot take:
When you immigrate to a new country, you transfer your loyalty to *that* country. It’s one thing to care about events in your former homeland but quite another to riot and commit violence inspired by its politics.
BREAKING NEWS!!!! Military landing in suburban neighbors in Larksper California. Massive military movements being reported in multiple states. Anyone have more info on this, please post below. My contact that sent this video is local military and says it is NOT a drill!!!!!

So, here you’ll see a weird mix. Serious defence and military commentary, NAFO memes, fights with Fascists and out and out Nazis, and the odd cat photo.
I hope it’s enough to have you all stick around.
I unfollowed Trent for the very issues that Gen Hertling brings up here regarding tanks (in my case it was artillery).
I shall post this meme aimed especially at Trent and his fellow travellers:
Against my better judgement, I thought I would engage
@TrentTelenko
on his 🧵, to perhaps defend some of those - as he says - are throwing "horses**t against the wall."
Here's a shorter 🧵 suggesting some things that Trent (& others) may not be considering. 1/
If you have been following my recent replies to a couple of threads, you’ll have discovered what I mention in my pinned post: I can’t stand the Freedumbers, antivaxxers, & convoyers - especially those with a military background.
I will call them out wherever & whenever I can.
* Hamas is a terrorist org that must be crushed
* Israel is justified in crushing them but should be deliberate & follow the LOAC
* Kids on either side shouldn’t be targeted
* Hating Jews & Muslims is racist
* Extremists exist on both sides
Why this is controversial is beyond me
Where are the pearl clutching doofuses in V4F and the rest of the ancient vetbro morons?
Oh yeah, complaining about a PowerPoint logo.
Meanwhile, the real CAF takes care of business.
Canadian Fellas:
I suggest we stop reacting to every media story about secret CAF stashes of weapons and/or ammo that could be given to Ukraine.
Defence literacy is so low in Canada that the media often doesn’t know what it’s talking about.
There are *no* real secret stashes.
The CPC better get a grip on this. I'm not a JT fan at all, but this canoodling with the far far right by Poilievre is getting disturbing.
Where are the Red Tories?
I see today that the Hawk jet trainer has been retired and that Canada is shifting jet training to the US Air Force.
My spider sense tells me that this isn’t a good thing, especially when it can be derailed instantly with a change in government in Washington.
🤔😳
I’m going to add a caveat to this gloomy post.
Canada has incredibly capable military personnel. They’ve become expert at making do with less and leveraging their training to arrive at solutions that would stymie other forces.
They can’t fix the underlying issues, though.
I’m seeing calls for Canada to further ramp up our military aid to Ukraine, in keeping with the large commitments made by our major allies.
It’s time for an unfortunate dose of reality.

These are the troops that the usual suspects would have you believe are too “woke” to fight and that the Russians would roll over.
Do they look “woke”, whatever that is?
Let’s talk briefly about the Old Army that they claim is so much better…

Roadtrip to Estonia🇪🇪
Canadian soldiers on Op REASSURANCE participated in Ex SPRING STORM with NATO allies.
This exercise was part of the overarching Ex STEADFAST DEFENDER with the goal of strengthening our collective defence capabilities.
There’s no weapons system that will win the war in Ukraine. Not ATACMS, not F-16s, not Storm Shadow.
What will win are motivated, well-trained soldiers employing proper combined arms tactics, backed by extensive logistics & intelligence. The equipment is important but secondary.
I'd like to signal boost my daughter,
@Black_Cloud_VII
.
She's new to Twitter, but is a Fella who's already delivered a few bonks on her own (and got a legit pedophile banned!)
She could use a few followers!
I quickly learned that the convoy people I despised *also* were Putin supporters. NAFO is a perfect way to engage both with some humour.
Then Melon Mush took over Twitter & created a cesspool of disinformation and Nazism. This has to be countered and I’ve committed to staying.
I’m gonna be that evil foreigner guy…
The US Government and military contain enough MAGA Biden-haters who would choose Putin over Ukraine that the possibility of a partisan “leak” of those classified documents can’t be discounted.
Worst were military veterans who supported the overthrow of the government. For them, I have nothing but distain and derision.
Then the Russians invaded Ukraine. Land warfare is something I have a passing knowledge of and I became even more engaged. I discovered NAFO.
@thecatreviewer
Our Erika, 15 years old and just diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She’s losing weight rapidly but keeping her spirits up. 15/15 for such a good girl.
A disturbing new trend has convoyers and far right nuts trying to dox and intimidate Canadian military members and retirees on Twitter. In a couple of instances, the threats have gone beyond this platform.
I’m *retired*, but thought this should be addressed publicly.

I just kicked a Fella follower (who I was following) to the curb for posting some very inflammatory MAGA sourced anti-Muslim propaganda.
Fella or not, my patience for such stuff from any quarter is zero.
And yes, the same would go for anti-Jewish propaganda.
@mtracey
@AVindman
If you’d served one millisecond in any western military, you’d know the difference between a valid military target and a terror bombing.
Then again, *nothing* you’ve written gives me confidence that you have *any* idea of what you’re talking about.
Totally justified.
The past couple of days has seen this site awash in hate speech, disinformation, extremism, and calls for violence like I’ve never seen.
As a result I’ve been reluctant to post much on the current Israeli - Palestinian crisis.
But it’s too big to ignore, so here goes.

Remember what I was saying about veterans?
An example: here we have a former Canadian special forces (JTF2) sniper literally calling for the *invasion* of Canada (that’s what Tucker has been advocating.
In some countries, he’d be in jail.

This is NOT a political post, & I’ll block anyone who appears here accusing me of supporting Hamas.
But these three videos are horrific. Evan Dyer has it exactly right. They’re indicative of a lack of training, a lack of leadership & a complete disregard for the rules of war.
This is a FM MAG 7.62mm machine-gun with a rate of fire of 12/second. It’s meant to fired in short, aimed bursts. Here an IDF soldier sprays a whole belt of unaimed ammo into a neighbourhood.
You can see it’s not the first belt because the breech is already scorching his fingers.
For the Carl G fans out there. Remember, this is the weapon Canadian instant experts were mocking when we provided them to Ukraine last year.
Which Army is using it here? /s
@RexBrynen
This is a great thread and I fear you’re exactly right. I suspect things will be exacerbated by the IDF’s apparent inability to pursue subtle and incremental tactics. They’ll take a sledgehammer to a fly, regardless of the consequences.
Back in Canada after three weeks away.
Canadians - don’t *ever* take for granted what we have or fail to recognize that there are many who would sell the whole thing down the river in support of a twisted ideology.

With today’s news that Republicans in the US Congress are preparing to abandon Ukraine, it is time for the West to wake up and see MAGA and its fellow travellers for what it is: a fascist, isolationist, bigoted movement that is a profound threat to democracy everywhere.
During my hiatus from this hell site, I’ve indulged in my interest in military history. As part of this, I’ve watched a few YouTube videos on the Second World War.
What I’ve seen has me perplexed and disturbed. Here’s what I mean:

Last week
@RexChapman
put a video up from this kid. It was the best thing to happen to me.
This video on
@canadagoose
is hysterical… if you know you know.
I continue to see photos and video captures of “destroyed” AFU equipment, some being pushed by sources that should be reliable.
A reminder: *all* of these are info ops. Some have been photoshopped, while others are taken out of context or have no context.
Be very sceptical!
I’ve taken a few days off to reflect and have come to a couple of conclusions.
I have decided to stop calling out Canadian far right (especially far right veterans’) accounts. I’m tired of their schtick, their insults, and the boring sameness of their idiotic rhetoric.
1/3
We have sacrificed liberal arts education on the alter of technology for years now. We’re finally paying the price: a complete lack of understanding of history, an inability to question things from an educated perspective, and a tendency to wallow in conspiracy and extremism.
After the very gratifying reaction to my rather gloomy post on Canadian defence policy (or lack thereof), I thought it might be useful to follow up with a personal thread of *my* experience as a Canadian soldier in this environment.

@spiralnarrative
You might enjoy this. The cartoon and quote are legendary in Commonwealth Armies. It’s real and attributed to Lt Ken Gilles of the 8th Army.
Then along came the “Freedom Convoy”. This so offended my sensibilities that I started engaging convoy supporters. Their language was so violent and so utterly crazy that engagement was impossible. My serious account turned into mocking.
@FredFellaIMO
It won’t until there’s a sea change in public attitudes towards defence in general. At the moment, there’s no party that’s serious about defence and foreign affairs and that’s our fault.
