@lancerichardson Love Salter, all of him, even this underrated relatively thin-on-the-ground novel, which has many amazing moments. Cf Coetzee's Disgrace, which has a comparable screenplay-like thinness. But the line you quote is fantastic, classic Salter. Thank you for highlighting it, Lance!
