Nice work here by @gracesdeng digging into the dispute over a state law intended to give Washington more oversight of a privately run, federal immigration detention facility in Tacoma.
The Department of Health has received over 300 complaints from detainees over reported mistreatment. The agency has sued for access and said in court documents that it believes "the health and safety of detainees is at risk.”

Department of Natural Resources wants about $100M in cap-and-trade dollars to fund land purchases for this proposed program. Not clear there's support among legislative leaders for the money to be used in that way.
Using public land to fund child care? WA lawmakers are considering it | The plan calls for using revenue from logging and carbon sequestration on state forestlands to help pay for new child care centers. #waleg

The strain on Washington's public defenders is at a point where a state official suggested a 90-day pause in assigning cases for people who weren't in custody so lawyers could focus on the backlog of jailed clients.
‘Verge of collapse’: Washington public defenders swamped by cases | “I am hearing people are not getting the proper representation,” says one lawmaker. #waleg

This is spot on. It doesn't work anymore, with a few exceptions. But companies like Twitter, Facebook, and Google made plenty of money selling ads against, and otherwise monetizing, the work journalists produced over the past two decades.
The thing you should know about media layoffs (happening at the LA Times and TIME today) is that they are not about merit, but about the for-profit media model not really working anymore.

@typewriteralley Thanks for the feedback. There's nothing inaccurate in the story. This was a brief article about a grant announcement late on a Friday afternoon, not a deep dive into the project. We've covered it in more detail previously and will continue to do so going forward.

A big federal funding win today for Washington. @WAStateStandard has you covered if you want to get up to speed on what's been proposed here and why clean energy advocates view "green" hydrogen as an important ingredient for cutting carbon emissions.

The plan is to admit about 50 patients by the end of October. The facility is part of the state's strategy for closing a gap in psychiatric hospital beds, including for those in jail awaiting evaluations to stand trial. #waleg
The state is planning to admit patients before the end of the month at a recently acquired psychiatric hospital in Tukwila, in spite of a union lawsuit seeking to stall the facility’s sale.

Trashy times for Washington's highways. The state's roads and public lands were strewn with nearly 40 million pounds of litter last year, according to new state estimates. (by @LaurelDemkovich)

Washington's Paid Family and Medical Leave program looks to hire another 49 workers to help speed up claims processing. Since launching in 2020, the program has distributed more than $3.4 billion in benefits to over 382,000 residents. (by @dospueblos)

Another development in the dispute over the boundaries of the 15th Legislative District. On Friday, the judge overseeing the case set a Sept. 29 deadline for the state to formally notify the court of the Legislature's position on calling a special session.
Democratic leaders in the Legislature do not support calling a special session to deal with redrawing the disputed boundaries of a south-central Washington legislative district. Instead, a federal court will be left to handle the task.
