A driver frustrated that the 20 mph speed limit means cyclists are going just as fast as she is. Seems to feel she has a right to go faster and be able to overtake them! 😂

@TESLA_winston I had to make that decision earlier this year. I ended up going with the Model X for two reasons: first, there was still quite a long waiting list for the R1S, and second I really didn’t need a full-size SUV. The Model X is the perfect size for me. I’ll reconsider in 2-3 years.

It was rather satisfying to unplug my laptop and connect my ASRock Rack ALTRAD8UD system to my big monitors to take over as my development system. I can hardly tell I’m working on AArch64 instead of x86 except the fans don’t spin up during a build anymore. 🙂

"64-bit Linux required". That should read "x86_64 Linux required". It won't run on AArch64 or other non-x86 64-bit platforms supported by Linux.

That’s a big box! Hmm yeah, lots of packaging. And a rather serious-looking cable at the bottom. QSFP56! Capable of connecting two computers together at 200 Gb/s (23 GB/s). It’ll be interesting to see how close I can come to that when my PCIe Mellanox card arrives next week.

I have my new water cooling setup running (currently with plain distilled water). I’m concerned the connections might suddenly fail though: do compression fits get more secure over time, or could the drain port with the valve just fail and cause the system to quickly empty?!

I have two more old Arm computers to give to anyone who wants them - just pay P&P. 1. SoftIron Overdrive 1000 with AMD Opteron-A SoC with 4x Cortex-A57 cores. 2. A Socionext Synquacer with 24x Cortex-A53 cores. Doesn’t boot: EEPROM is messed up. Should be fixable tho.

Super happy that using a desktop environment on AArch64 Linux is just as easy as on x86_64 these days (with some minor exceptions). openSUSE running Xfce 4 with NVIDIA accelerated graphics, PyCharm, VSCode etc.

Got my new 64-core ADLINK firmware hacking system set up pretty nicely now. Got BMC and host UARTs, and JTAG connected and my expect script to flash UEFI firmware via the BMC is working well. So now I can start debugging!

That was a fun bhyve call! I got to remember stuff from 25 years ago about how x86 machines boot: starting in 16-bit real mode, setting up the GDT then jumping to 32-bit protected mode. And now jumping from that into 64-bit long mode.

Heh. I think I actually got my best ever performance review this year! I feel like I’ve really settled into my firmware developer role after getting pulled between Windows installers, drivers, Solaris drivers, Linux, sysadmin etc. tasks for many years.
