Thread: How to be a more supportive fan
A few days ago, puffin-san, a Japanese fan, posted a link to an online column titled "What does it mean to support someone." I found it very positive and thought I would translate it into English.
Takamina: I get tired of dealing with people easily
Ueda: But you were in a large group and surrounded by people, right?
Takamina: Yes, and I was always tired.
"Year 18 of Reiwa" is trending in Japan because Japanese abbreviates years using the first letter of the era...so year 18 of Reiwa becomes...you guessed it...R18...
“AKB sings about the physical beauty of cherry blossoms, Nogizaka sings about the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms, and Keyaki sings about how the cherry blossoms are made beautiful by the dead bodies buried underneath the trees”
Yukirin "Please don't put cologne on your hand when you come shake my hand. It gets on my hand, and fans that come see me afterward will think it's my perfume, but in fact it's just some ojisan's cologne. No one wins here, so it's best if you just don't put anything."
a Japanese TV show called a woman "science-y girl" because she knows how to use the SUM function in excel
they also said she is "well educated but has zero womanly qualities"
oh Japan
Someone supposedly from inside the police and close to security detail said they did have training scenarios where the subject is being fired upon, but their simulations all started with the shooter calling out Abe’s name first, and didn’t expect the shooter to just fire.
Yukirin: A Morning Musume concert once overlapped with a very important performance of the school's wind ensemble, which I was on
Yukirin: So I quit the wind ensemble to go see MoMusu
Yahoo comments on SUM41 disbanding:
"Many years ago I mistakenly bought a SUM41 album when I meant to buy an SKE48 album. I tossed the receipt and I couldn't return it, so I figured I'd give it a listen. I became a huge fan and it was my entrance to western music."

Thread: My thoughts on being an idol for 7 years
Cons
- hard to meet up friends that work in companies
- have to hide my identity when I'm outside
- not a lot of part-time job options
- poor by default
- I'm technically my own company so there are no days off
- I could get jobs
Bought the digital edition of the latest Bunshun because I wanted to read about what they found on Aruno. I haven't read the version released online earlier because I had wanted to read the "full" article. Thread starts here.
"Non-NGT 48G fans: Niigata is shady af
Sakamichi fans: 48G is shady af
Non-AkiP idol fans: AkiP idols are shady af
General Public: the whole idol business is shady af"
A Japanese blogger has been writing poems almost daily for gakki on his blog since 2007. After finding out about her marriage to Hoshino Gen, the latest entry is titled "Hiatus".
a side effect of PD48: new fans are now making up 48g history
>> myao was much more popular than mayu at the time
not even akip can come up with that plot twist
#推し疲れ "Oshi fatigue" is trending in Japan because wotas of all kinds are getting a little worn out waiting for the day when they can go to events again
Apparently some fans have been saying that Fujimori and Saitou (hosts of NHK Rajira) should have done more when Seira spoke about what happened. Fujimori ended up tweeting his thoughts on the matter. A thread:
There is an event tomorrow to commemorate Niigata port’s 150th anniversary and NGT48’s 3rd anniversary.
NGT just announced two members that will not be performing tomorrow: Yamaguchi Maho and Tano Ayaka.
AKB48 Cafe "We're closing due to redevelopment around the station"
Gundam Cafe "We have no plans to relocate or close" (official phone reply)
JR East "Currently there are no redevelopment or renovation plans. If we do we will issue a press release." (official email reply)
latest development: graudated member Inoue Sayuri pulls the rug from under Seira by saying the director "is decidedly not unresaonable" and "never once said anything like that to me during my 9 years there", and fans proceed to tell her to maybe shut up
so apparently the director of the nogi live often verbally abuse members, calling them busu or 死ね, and also said that it's their fault that kakehashi fell during last year's concert
Come to think of it, the guy that threatened Shiraishi Mai on SNS was arrested and his face was all over the news. So why were Maho’s attackers released?
#NGT48
#山口真帆
Bunshun "hey we caught you dating some guy"
some idols "no that's not me" / "no it wasn't a date"
some other idols *say nothing*
Nagasawa Nanako "Oh yeah that's my boyfriend! By the way we're getting married in August!"
"Everyone is talking about how Nogizaka "got the lyrics wrong" or "high-fived Arashi" during their collaboration, but I'm just trying to stop my mother, an Arashi fan, from going to Nogizaka handshake to touch the hands that touched Arashi."
Renka "wotas often ask me how to get girlfriends"
Renka "at handshakes, they would ask 'Rentan, how do I get a girlfriend?'"
Renka "So I ask them, 'Is there someone you like?'"
Renka "Often they say, 'No, but I like you'"
Renka "Then I say, "You probably can't get one then'"
Pros
- the bond between my wotas and me is very strong, even stronger than a significant other
- the members in my group are my brothers-in-arms
- I get to experience things that I wouldn't have otherwise
- I can achieve a lot of my dreams
- I get to meet a lot of people
- I face
Hirate on radio just now
"I have decided to leave Keyakizaka46.
I don't want to talk about it right now.
If I ever feel like talking about it, then I will."
Then it was back to regular radio stuff on SOL
So basically it comes down to this
Maho says "a second man came out from the unit across from mine and assaulted me
Management says "a member was approached on the street by the assailants and only provided information for the men to figure out when Maho would return"

"Frankly I'm not that happy about my life. I used to perform in Budokan and Tokyo Dome, and now I'm working part-time at a BBQ restaurant for 1000 yen an hour and have to shake hands with guests for free."
J-idols
visible at product design stage and has open alpha testing as soon as ver 0.0.1 is released. constant hotfixes based on user feedback, but also almost never reaches release
K-idols
official releases only, development process is not shown
If I had to tell someone the difference between Japanese idols and Korean idols, I might say that K-idols celebrate perfection while J-idols celebrate imperfection
I often think about how idol fans, despite being under the same category, can behave very differently on social media: arguing amonst themselves, voicing their complaints to the idols or to the management, or become antis and get aggresive.
Doesn't look like they're having fun.
A Taiwanese fan emailed Nogizaka management and got the following reply
"Currently the biggest hurdle is privacy laws of other countries. It will take time, but we would like our overseas fans to participate in the event, and we will work hard to make it happen."
Can’t decide if this is just a really bad excuse or if they watched too much TV and really believed this would be the case. Can you imagine Golgo 13 screaming at his target every time?
Is your support really making your oshi happy?
Could it be that your support is appreaciated, but it's also becoming an emotional burden on them?
How to truly make them happy? What's the difference?
I learned about this from a reader's comment.
As a Karin fan and an idol fan, I think I have done everything I can to support her, so I have no regrets.
And really, even though we tend to think ourselves as the ones doing the supporting, in reality it is us who are supported by our oshis.
Still a bit shocked it’s so soon but I’ve been expecting it since last year so I’m somewhat prepared.
I am extremely lucky and honored to have been her fan - if not for her I probably wouldn’t have known what it’s like to really support an idol.
Thank you for everything.
- do not waver when bad things happen to members, when there are rumors of disbanding, or even rumors of dating, and carry on supporting the members and their performance as usual
Sakamichi staff is apparently checking fans' merch in the background for meet and greet.
sakamichi goods = ok
other groups (48g, niziu, etc) = probably not?
On the other hand, there are "role model" fans who are admired by other fans.
The ones that caught my attention usually are the kind that
- support all the members of a group equally

"you didn't stop the concert when imaizumi was gone"
"why don't you rename the group to Hiratezaka46?"
