Message to TV announcers...please tone down the "grain" word for putting surfaces. Poa annua greens have no grain, bent greens, when preped for turnament play, have no surface grain affecting a putt. Even Bermuda greens, grain effect is minimized for tournament play by grooming.

Patience is the word!
It takes 20 weeks of growing weather from seeding a bent green to make a playable surface. That being said, it takes one to two years for a seeded bent green to reach its genetic maturity.
Courses that open early, too much play too fast may create setbacks.

Bayonne GC opened for play in 2006 with greens seeded to 50% creeping / 50% velvet bents. The greens have performed well, no Poa, however, it's time to strip and re-turf all greens. The sand mix has tested well for continued use so it's a strip and re-sod with 007XL bentgrass.
