A new plaque has been installed at the spot where the Colston statue was thrown into the harbour. The plaque was commissioned by a group of ‘guerrilla historians’, designed by artist John Packer and features part of a poem by Vanessa Kisuule.
At the beginning of this year there was no way that I would have felt comfortable cycling with my five- and nine-year-old daughters from Hotwells to St Paul’s.
@BristolCouncil
, keep up the great work encouraging cycling and do please make these pop-up lanes permanent.
This is appalling. Jack Rawlins, 30, of Raleigh Rd had a previous caution for an attack on a cyclist. In this incident in Bedminster, he drove into the 56-year-old cyclist twice, punched him in the face, knocked him unconscious & drove off. Surely this deserves a prison sentence?
Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking news from this morning. There should be no reason at all in a modern city for a cyclist to be forced to share the road with a lorry.
“Please work hard. Please aim high. Please don’t let anyone put you off.” This new laptop was donated anonymously to Cotham School today with an inspiring note attached.
Buckle up for a thread about a unique pub. 🍻
The Kings Head, which has been shut since the start of the pandemic, is the only Bristol pub recognised as being of national importance in Camra’s Heritage Listed Interior and has got some of the oldest bar fittings of any UK pub
In a production error in the Bristol24/7 newsletter, a sub-head from yesterday remained on a story today about our deputy mayor. Thanks to everyone for pointing out the mistake & apologies to Craig Cheney whose departure is not long-awaited nor will be accompanied by a brass band
RIP Roy Hackett, a pioneer and an inspiration in so many ways. He helped lead the Bristol bus boycott in 1963 and was one of the founders of St Paul’s Carnival.
Just two weeks ago, I wrote a story about how demolition of the former Co-Op funeral parlour in Redfield was now illegal. Tonight, it has gone up in flames.

On closer investigation, I deduced that a meditating Buddhist and a prostrate Muslim would easily be able to leave room for an incense-swing Christian, but only if a Jedi protected the interior from inclement weather
A protest by strippers took place on College Green this afternoon. They say that around 100 jobs are at risk if the city council bans sexual entertainment venues from the city.
Sixteen-year-old Luke Wheaton, who died in the Avonmouth explosion this week, was a season ticket holder at Bristol City. A shirt with his name on has been placed in the Section 82 singing section of the ground today, with players wearing black armbands in his memory.
The Bristol bus boycott of 1963 is among the winning designs for a new stained glass window at St Mary Redcliffe church. One of Ealish Swift's four panels shows Jesus among the protesters. The panels will replace ones that were dedicated to Edward Colston.
Unanimous support from councillors for a 4,000-seater Sports & Convention Centre next to Ashton Gate; as well as a hotel; a multi-storey car park; residential and office space; retail shops and gym.
Overheard on Pero’s Bridge:
“Jamie, I know that you’re going to propose to me. Please don’t propose to me here. If you propose to me here, I’ll smack you in the face.”
The demolition of Blue Mountain has revealed a new view of this part of the Full Moon. Laying claim to be one of Bristol’s oldest pubs, there is believed to have been an inn of some sort on this site, on the main road from Bristol to Gloucester, from as early as the 13th century.
By my calculations this is the 15th ‘kill the bill’ protest in Bristol. People have been gathering on College Green before a march around the city centre starts at 3pm.
How could anyone with an iota of empathy for Bristol think that these 9 and 11 storey blocks behind the iconic listed cranes
@mshedbristol
are acceptable? The current Labour mayor and administration supports this destruction of our historic skyline - use your vote wisely!
Bristol’s Clean Air Zone will undoubtedly be an inconvenience for many drivers. But there are areas of our city centre that have illegal levels of air pollution. A little inconvenience pales into insignificance against the need for cleaner air.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we are so fortunate in Bristol to have so many wonderful independent bookshops. Explore them all on May 13 as part of Bristol Walkfest and get 10% off book purchases.
The excellent new segregated cycle lane across Bristol Bridge is now open and it’s exactly the sort of safe cycling infrastructure that our city desperately needs. Let’s hope it can soon continue along Victoria Street towards Temple Meads.
I thought my bike was stolen a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday I found it still locked where I had evidently left it a few hundred yards away. I now have two bikes. Moral of the story: remember where you park.
Low-traffic neighbourhoods halve road injuries, eliminate rat-running, reduce pollution even at boundaries and reduce street crime (credit:

). And yet there is widespread misinformation and distrust.
And in the best news ever, this unique pub is being reopened next month by Kelly and Bob of Good Chemistry. See you in the tramcar bar for a pint of mild!
BREAKING PEDESTRIANISATION NEWS: Chandos Road could be the next street in Bristol to be pedestrianised. It is hoped that the success of the pedestrianisation of Cotham Hill - which will now be made permanent - can be replicated here.
For ten years, I have been wanting Jim’ll Paint It to design a cover for Bristol24/7 magazine. For our tenth anniversary, it has happened! Featuring Brunel and Maya Jama racing on e-scooters, referee Jayde Adams, not one but two Jeffs, and the start of Bristol’s underground.
