I’ve been settling in behind the scenes, but today we’re announcing it broadly: I’m thrilled to say I’m the new Executive Director of the ReCreate Coalition! This is my dream job, and there’s never been a more important time to defend balanced copyright and fair use.

Yup yup. Copyright is a means to an end; if your top priority is hoarding and enforcing IP, you've lost the plot.
I've accused the entertainment industry of abandoning creativity and turning into boring IP management companies run by lawyers and accountants. They don't even pretend otherwise anymore.

One speaker also said (again, as a good thing) that these orders were issued and controlled by judges, with no political accountability. Hmmmmm. I guess a lot of where you stand on this stuff really depends on where you sit. From where I sit, this is terrifying.

Put me down for Team None.
So it's not theft when you train OpenAI on copyrighted materials, but it IS theft when you train another LLM on OpenAI's "knowledge." I think we either need to call it all theft or none of it.

Yes
IMO the best reason AI outputs shouldn’t be copyrightable subject matter is because there’s no coherent policy reason to make them copyrightable subject matter.

Existing fair use law adequately addresses computational uses of in-copyright works and provides a deep well of precedent and foundational constitutional commitments in the copyright system, more than enough to guide courts and others in evaluating AI training.
