Jane Bolin was the 1st Black female judge in the U.S. She earned her law degree from Yale in 1931, where she was also the 1st Black woman to graduate. She was appointed to serve as Judge of the Domestic Relations Court in 1939 & went on to serve 40 yrs on the bench.

Constance Motley was the 1st Black woman to be appointed as a federal judge and the 1st Black woman to serve as a member of the NY State Senate. Motley was significantly involved in the civil rights movement, once visiting the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in jail.

Thurgood Marshall, a Baltimore native, was the first Black justice of the Supreme Court, serving from 1967-1991. After studying law at

, Marshall went on to serve as counsel to the

. In 1954, he won the seminal case of Brown v. Board of Ed.

“I’m not doing it from a position that I just want to put people in jail, I’m doing it from a position that when I look, the victims of these crimes tend to look like me. Now I’m representing the victims. I’m now making sure that we protect the citizens,” Bates said.
