Dispersal at short distances is more complicated for plants than for microbes. Although plant communities vary with distance travelled, they are not "strong enough" to modify the microbiome, especially bacteria. Chemistry matters more for microbes.

DNA-based metabarcoding discovers threatened fungal species even there where they can be missed in fruitbody surveys. Some fungi, though, may escape metabarcoding since deadwood sampling to get eDNA can not be complete.

Fungi and bacteria on the roots of grassland plants are affected by the species identity of neighbouring plants (of course in addition to the soil chemistry and the host plant itself). What is the importance of microbiome sharing in grassland soils?

Drivers of soil fungal community composition change with scale: vegetation is important at small distances, environmental factors prevail at regional scales. Yeast communities show remarkable spatial homogeneity across spaces with several omnipresent taxa.

How much do we know about functioning of microbiomes? So far, at least half of large global protein families were unknown. Collaborative sampling of environmment and use of metagenomic data help to identify new proteins including their 3D structures.

Fungal habitats within a forest are distinct, but share some community members: leaves have a legacy for litter, litter for soil and soil affects roots. The deadwood of various sizes hosts different fungi and contributes most to forest stand biodiversity.
