Over the last few years I’ve become increasingly worried about Britain’s drift in an ever more troubled world. This is why I’m proud to be joining @UKLabour as a political adviser to @DavidLammy .

I have non-ironically come round to the idea that the burden placed on young people in the UK to protect mainly the old has been so severe there needs to be a financial societal thank you to the those under thirty. We’ve got 21 year olds with no symptoms isolating for 10 days.

MPs in the Ukrainian parliament wave flags of the countries they feel are helping them. Notice two Union Jacks. There are appears to be no French or German flags.

How the flags waved in Kyiv have changed since 2014. At Maidan it was 🇪🇺 everywhere. Protestors were shot and even died waving it. In 2022 the flags flown in parliament of those helping 🇺🇦 are NATO and 🇺🇸🇩🇰🇹🇷🇨🇦🇵🇱🇨🇿🇪🇪🇱🇹🇱🇻 and not one but two🇬🇧🇬🇧. But no 🇫🇷🇩🇪 or 🇪🇺 in sight.

We’ve got a generation who’s university, social, travel and often loves lives have been ruined and have taken on often multiple 10 day isolations to protect mainly the old — a generation that sadly seems to hold them collectively or at least their aspirations in complete disdain

You can't see this if you insist on only reading world events through Brexit -- but it is actually Germany which is incinerating trust across Central and Eastern Europe right as Britain, for all the pandemic's parties, is rapidly rebuilding it with security action over Ukraine.

Whilst SW1 obsesses and reels from scandal this has been a decisive week for post-Brexit Britain -- its actions to support Ukraine militarily and now in intelligence terms are making it loud and clear there is no European "strategic autonomy" without the UK.

Britain’s highly active stance on Ukraine is being highly appreciated in Washington right now and across the Eastern flank of NATO and the EU. Their perception is that, for all the British noise right now, the country is pulling through strongly for its allies:

The UK has flown some 2,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine on several C-17 flights just this week. The unusually rapid gifting of kit appears to underline how seriously UK views the threat of a new Russian invasion

Most British young people — rightly or wrongly — see the old as the generation that gave them unaffordable homes, climate change, loss of rights and opportunities in leaving the EU and now years of covid suffering to protect them. It’s just bad for a country to feel like this.

What I’d like to see if a societal thank you: a major — we’re talking thousands of pounds — gift to every young person under 30. Done right it could turn tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives around. It should be funded by a one off tax on the generations they protected.

There should be zero tolerance for this kind of Islamophobia in British politics. Conspiracy thinking against Britain’s Muslim and Jewish communities has no place in Parliament.

To clarify: This is not a criticism of the British foreign correspondents or news editors doing an excellent job it is a criticism of the fact their work is not everywhere number one item or being paid nearly as much attention to.

Most audacious thing Macron could do to respond to the current geopolitics? Propose a European but not exclusively EU nuclear energy alliance with its objective to dramatically reduce dependence on Russian and all other forms of oil and gas. Push the German mistake.

It's not a united West. An active sub-alliance of Britain, Poland, the Baltic and a few others is in fact very apparent in this crisis. As is Germany sabotaging deterrence efforts -- trying to rule out SWIFT -- American weariness and French hesitancy. Not the geopolitics of 2014.

The exile of Moscow Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt is appalling and must be seen in a wider context of flight and emigration of Russian Jews as middle classes exit. Decades of work went into rebuilding Russian Judaism but this is now collapsing.

The U.K. has become such a divided and embittered country between ages, nations and regions — I think the symbolic thank you from old to young would be very important in fostering a threadbare sense of common purpose and togetherness.

The older generation are very attached — rightly in my view — to the values of nationhood and honouring sacrifice. Funding this with what would be for them individually a extremely small one off tax increase they wont even notice could do a lot to give meaning to these values.

Thinking today about the old Ashkenazi custom to stay up late and play chess and cards on Nittel Nacht, the Yiddish term for Christmas Eve. Here the young Rabbi Mendel Menachem Schneerson, to be the Chabad Rebbe, plays his father in law Rabbi Yosef Isaac Schneerson.
