I'd always thought I would be a corporate slave till 60.
Make a shit ton of money and retire in peace.
Instead.
Today I am 33, with 24 months of savings and some raw ideas.
And I'm quitting the corporate rat race to go solo.
This is my story -
Just 25 days left in the year.
Good time to reflect on the big questions in life -- how we define success, happiness, love and wisdom.
Time to turn to my favorite modern philosopher --

Ok I have to say this..
this is sad to read.
this person got misled by the indie hacker bubble we live in.
Folks here build in public and share their MRR numbers to inspire their followers.
But end up making difficult things sound easy.
And people starting out think that

But it was one of the most enriching experiences of my life

The user owns the problems.
But founders own the solutions.
Don't ask users what solutions they want.
Only ask them what problems they face.
And then build solutions that YOU think should exist.

Love the concept of "talent stack" that Scott brings out in this book.

This is Pinboard’s revenue over the years -

What else?

I turn 33 today.
I don't have 33 lessons for you.
I just have 3 -

I've realized I learn the most about business when I launch new products and services.
There are roughly 25 "work weeks" left in the year.
This is probably crazy 🙈
But I'm going to launch 1 product every week for the next 25 weeks.

There's plenty of startup wisdom on Twitter.
But not enough quality content around being a solopreneur.
Working for yourself brings a unique set of challenges.
I study these 16 "companies of one" closely for my business education.

So many people miss out on Twitter by thinking of it as a marketing channel.
It's so much more.
Sure you can find your customers here.
But you can also find mentors, collaborators, and peers.
And you can find friends!

Some day I'll have millions🤞
I thought Twitter was the only platform I could find any likeminded people on.
- LinkedIn was too fake
- Instagram was too flashy
- Facebook was... well... Facebook🤷♂️
I curated my following.
Killed the negativity from Twitter.
Started with a fresh slate after 10 years.

What a way to wake up..
Had 3 back to back sales last night..
$1000+ within 6 hours ❤️
Only because I was promoting my community and mastermind every day for the last few days.
I used to shy away from self promotion in the past - cringe at it, feel bad about it.
So today I signed a contract to be a consulting PM at a startup.
Was waiting for this opportunity to convert for many weeks now😅
The gig -
- is exciting
- pays the bills
- spares me time to work on my own projects
More details soon
But first, tomorrow -
I fire my boss💪
I'm a mediocre entrepreneur.
I know my limits.
I can't hustle 24*7.
I can't run profitable ads
I can't invent a brand new category.
I can't code a fancy looking product.
These are all the constraints I must live with.
But I choose to look at these constraints as
If I'm on a new product's website, I go straight to the pricing page to see if can I even afford it.
If I don't find the price, or see only - "try for free" button I'm not signing up.
Not enough trust has been built.
You don't do your customers a favor by hiding your pricing.
Not everyone can benefit from
#buildinpublic
- Some startups need privacy early on
- Some founders aren't used to creating content
- And some folks are just too introverted to share things openly.
It's completely okay to build in private.
Don't fall for the FOMO
I'm not much into follower count.
But
if you're starting from 0, this is an effective model -
0 - 600 - Be the "Reply guy" (Add to the conversation)
600 - 1500 - Be the Cheerleader (Amplify others) + Reply guy
1500+ - Share Value to your followers + Cheerleader + Reply guy

Reading is a Superpower.
Its the most effective way of upgrading your mind.
If you don't have a reading habit, this is a good time to start.
Here are some books that will help you easily build a reading habit and expand your mind at the same time.
📚5 books for the mind 👇
I knew more money was not going to add more value to my life.
Plus I realized 3 things -
1. The corporate staircase I was climbing did not have an end.
2. I needed more interesting problems to solve than my job was throwing up.
3. I wanted to solve them with interesting ppl
The one with
@joerogan
Naval's clarity of thought comes through brilliantly in this one.
The discussion around communism and capitalism is just mind-blowing here.
Of course, every sizeable company gets into these problems.
That's when I realized I didn't want to work for ANY large corporation again.
I wanted to work for myself, or at best, a small team solving interesting problems.
And I wanted to prioritize my life over my career.
Oh this is crazy...
Love waking up like this 😍
It's incredible this writing course was a stray thought in my mind just a few weeks ago.
I didn't think anyone would pay money for it.
Today it crossed $1000.
By far my best selling info product😄
Humbled and grateful 🙏
So last year I built a one person ghostwriting agency.
Ran it for a 6 months, grew it to $10K+ and then shut it down.
Here’s why I failed and why you should NOT become a ghostwriter -
First off - Why I did it -
Many friends have asked him about the "why" and "how" of this move.
I broke down my decision making process in this short blog post.
If you're a corporate employee, this might help.
I also added some parameters you can use to take the leap -
My corporate friends are amazed that I am doing this.
They think I'm taking a big "risk"
Personally, I've tried to minimize the risk as much as possible.
Honestly, tying your life to a single source of income is the biggest RISK you can take.
To each his own🤷♂️
Today I start my last week as a full time corporate employee.
Next Monday I go to the office to return the laptop and pack my things.
This week is about reflection.
It's about looking back at the last 11 years of climbing a never ending staircase.
And then jumping off😅
Life update: I started a job board 🤩
399 SEO clicks in 4 weeks
• 0 DR
• 0 Social Media mentions
• 1500+ programmatic pages
I started this project as an "educated" guess based on the data/trends I saw
Initial signals are positive.
Here's what I'm doing👇
#buildinpublic
Might be an unpopular opinion but I do NOT think prompt engineer is a powerful skill.
It's valuable yes. But not a game changer
It's like the skill of searching on Google.
It's useful for every job, but nobody gets a job because of it.
No?
Started a faceless YouTube channel just for fun last week.
Already crossed 20 hours watch time.
With just 7 videos - all generated with AI.
Better ROI on my time than Twitter 🤣
@bohlenlabs
I just want to say if your ltv is less than your annual price then you don't have a sustainable SaaS business..
You have a leaky bucket.
And no amount of creative pricing can fix a leaky bucket.
Simple SEO strategy for a low ticket SaaS (<$49/m) -
To get sustainable long term traffic -
- 10 winning blog posts
- Each getting 500 views per month
- Converting at 1%
- So 50 New signups
- ARPU -> $20
- $1000 new MRR added every month
Simple NOT easy.
