I hate that “basket weaving” is so often used as shorthand for something irrelevant & useless. Do you know how much math, plant care, planning, symbolism, story & skill goes into basket weaving? It’s such settler arrogance that dismisses these knowledge systems

Noticing that settlers use however many generations they’ve been settlers to their advantage. 5 generations +? = “we’ve been here ages! Get over it! We’re basically indigenous too” Less than 3 gens? = “none of MY family colonized anything! I’m innocent!” They win either way.

Basket weaving isn’t something that most people can do alone. It is long term community building. The plants must be cared for by someone, gathered by someone at the right time, processed by a group of people - these arduous tasks are made easier with more hands.
