Wise words from
@darksoulstoilet
:
"The energy of a weird toilet and that of a Soulsborne map are very similar, I think they are both moments when you are helpless and you can get scared easily."
I have nothing to promote so here's some life advice from me, a stranger on Twitter, the best source of life advice:
- Support local businesses
- Whitelist good sites in your ad blocker
- Sleep on everything you write and read it the next day
- Be kind to people, including you
I spoke to
@SettledRS
about the making and rise of Swampletics, the best
@OldSchoolRS
series in ages - and quite possibly ever - for
@pcgamer
. Very pleased with how this came out.
Finally had time to get this mammoth interview out. Much more than just Lightfall details in here. Thanks to
@joegoroth
and
@DJMcAuliffe
for their insight.
We've had rough launches as long as we've had online games, and it feels like the same questions come up every launch. Why did this happen, and why did it take so long to fix? For
@GamesRadar
I spoke to several devs about why these games are so tricky.
Rare personal tweet.
Both my parents have COVID. Mom had a chest x-ray today, dad is in his 60s. Both are coughing. I'm immensely worried about them.
I'm praying to a god I don't believe in. I'll take whatever thoughts, prayers, or vibes you have left.
Wear a mask. Stay home.
Here it is: the big Unity dev report. Many thanks to all the developers who spoke to me and my colleagues for this story. Hard to remember the last industry issue that got such intense and universal backlash.
We spoke to 10 developers about Unity's newly announced install fee, and they all agreed it's catastrophically bad news for people making games, and by extension, people who want to play good games
@ThatSamWinkler
That level is one of my favorite sections in any game, because half the bloodied drawings are so blaringly cutesy they may as well say "here's a picture of me and my friends and family with all our organs intact, I hope that doesn't change" for all the subtlety of it
This was, fittingly, a nightmare to prepare between a million other stories and events, but I'm super pleased with how it came out. Thanks to
@tomfromtheweb
as well as Brian Frank and Rob Adams for their time and input.
Seen so much bad games journalism today that I have to call some out. This image is a console mock-up which is totally unrelated to what this story's about: photos of an alleged prototype for a black DualSense (which we already know won't exist at launch). Transparently dishonest
Oh shit I almost forgot to mention this:
After five years of freelancing, I'm now a full-time staff writer at
@GamesRadar
. I'm thrilled to have a permanent home, especially since it's filled with cool people I really enjoy working with.
@tha_rami
@DestinyTheGame
Successfully porting the friggin Halo magnum has got to be one of the greatest feats in FPS history. Destiny's combat is like a bee; anything that passes through it somehow comes out better.
@alyssa_merc
plotting to take down the senior student who's immune to poison and stealth by using his fear of spiders to embarrass him in front of his friends, thereby crippling him socially and making him temporarily vulnerable to an instant kill
"Journalist mode" would be beating the whole DLC not just offline, but on an island with access to no information, and then giving it a glowing score because mama didn't raise no bitch
COVID update: my dad is well past it, and despite my mom's best efforts to make things harder by refusing to rest, she's safely turned the corner as well. My sister and I are still symptom-free, thankfully.
Again: wear a mask, keep your distance, and stay home.
This is a good point that I want to add to. New writers are usually freelancers, and finding breaking news takes time freelancers often can't afford, plus big news takes connections new writers don't often have. But you can find NEW stories in communities and games you know well.
People often ask me how to get into games journalism. The surest way to get noticed? Break news. News always moves the needle, as it has again today. At Kotaku, we're not exactly masters of getting traffic for, say, game tips. But when we dig and break news, readers show up.
Developers, publishers, PR: for the love of all that is holy, send review codes early and set embargoes that give people time to play your game without rushing through it. An unreasonably tight turnaround hurts everyone.
Hey, an industry discussion I can properly participate in.
A few times a year, I lecture on freelance writing at my old university, and I always lead with these two slides. This is stuff I wanted to see when I started.
Important context in thread.
That's a wrap on Ghost of Tsushima. Great finale, and a great start to the weekend. I have a few tiny-big problems with it (mostly camera related), but the presentation is immaculate and I got sucked in. Reckon it's a 4/5 for me.
Risk of Rain 2 impressions:
1) Wisps can burn in hell
2) Those bell things that shoot spikes can burn with the wisps
3) The magma worm can burn my face off and I hate him
4) I was gonna play The Division 2 all weekend but I played Risk of Rain 2 instead and can't stop send help
I'm updating the list of the best indie games of 2019 (and beyond) at
@GamesRadar
. Bombard me with cool games I may have missed or that you feel deserve a look - anything that was released or will be released in 2019 or 2020!
As many Souls newcomers try to get into Elden Ring, I want to talk to you, game devs, about your approach to tutorials, and how effectively (or ineffectively) you think Elden Ring conveys and teaches its features and rules. DMs are open, email's in my bio! Shares appreciated etc
@FraserIBrown
@MckKirk
An actual comment: "Game development is not nearly as complex as you're thinking it is. And especially when it comes to your example of the balance of a first person shooter. Balance of a first person shooter is almost purely math."
My schedule and coworkers at
@GamesRadar
are amazing, but hoo boy did I overwork myself as a games freelancer. My best-paid month about killed me. It 100% wasn't worth the money. Free time is important, and you do your best work when you aren't stressed. Be kind to yourself.
We really need to talk more about crunch in games journalism. Because it's totally a thing, and not just at "content mills." I'm reminded of IGN's Anthem review, which involved pushing out 40+ hours just to review the game before it was no longer competitively viable for views.
Hey that's cool, I wonder who EDGE recruited to share some exclusive Final Shape insights, Year 10 news, and Year 11 embers. Just to pull something out of a hat, maybe some details on the next Exotic mission too. Sounds like it'd be fun to work on for your first EDGE appearance.
In Edge 399 we go yokai hunting with an exclusive look at Kemuri, the extraordinary debut from
@unseentokyo
. Also inside:
@DestinyTheGame
beyond The Final Shape, a visit to
@RevSoftGames
, and reviews including Still Wakes The Deep. Available now:
@MartinNebelong
I spoke to the original environment artist yesterday, and ahead of our story shared this video with him. His response: "I've just seen it, it's really cool. Can't believe I have fanart now."
My favorite character in The Division was Manhattan itself, so for
@GamesRadar
I looked into the making of The Division 2's Washington, DC. Super cool stuff.
If you're a game developer who's been affected by the Unity install fee news, or you simply have Some Thoughts on the situation, I want to hear from you for a story. DMs open, or reach me at austin dot wood at future net dot com.
Needed to dip back into Ori and the Will of the Wisps several times this week to get screenshots or double-check small things, and wow I already miss playing that game
Sonic Frontiers reviews are finally out and as mixed as expected, so here's a throwback to the best DM among the many I received after my preview from the summer
@MH_Canta
Her incompatibility with Beidou and Electro Traveler is a big buzzkill. The fact that Xingqiu's burst works properly gives me hope that they can adjust those abilities so she is more fluid.
@CoolGuyGames
Overjoyed to see easy one-hit kills get the axe, excited to live in a world where Warlocks are allowed to melee, VERY concerned that Silence and Squall is going to be the first live Super in almost every game.
It's finally here! The Zelda: TOTK dev roundtable I wanted to read and therefore had to write. Thanks to all the devs featured (whose profiles I've linked where possible) for their time and insight.
Thanks for all the love on my previous tweet.
Mom's x-rays showed no pneumonia, but scarring from previous pneumonia is making this harder, and she's got a steady fever. Dad's feeling much better with relatively few symptoms.
Taking it one day at a time.
