On 5 February 1869, Australia’s largest alluvial gold nugget was found in Moliagul, Victoria.   Named ‘Welcome Stranger’, the nugget was discovered by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates while searching around the roots of a tree in Bulldog Gully.
