Happy 20th Birthday, Shaun of the Dead! For
@indiewire
I spoke to
@edgarwright
@simonpegg
, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran & actual Penelope Wilton (!!) for an oral history of how it was made. Now how’s that for a slice of fried gold?!
I was thrilled to be asked to write one of the first
@rollingstoneUK
cover features with
@bastille
! Huge thanks especially to
@bastilledan
for trusting me to tell a very personal story he’s never spoken about before; know it will help others going through similar. Go grab a copy
I love Graham Coxon’s new project ‘Superstate’ so much - spoke to him about this, anxiety, a terrible last year, Blur and much more for
@IndyMusic
. Give it a read here:
Last week I spoke to director
@Kath_Ferguson
for the
@EveningStandard
about her incredible film on Sinéad O’Connor. I finished writing it yesterday & then saw the terrible news. A great insight this into why Sinéad was always on the right side of history
"One of the zombies came straight at me and bit my leg - they'd gone feral!" I had a blast talking to
@edgarwright
and
@simonpegg
about how they made the wonderful 'Shaun of the Dead' for
@guardianculture
@squires_david
@kohlgrrl
I did go REALLY high on the swing and it was great for ten minutes. And then here I am pointing at the missing tooth. And no, I have no idea why I’m wearing tinsel on my head (it was July!)
Had to say goodbye to little Betsy in the early hours today which was so very sad. She didn’t recover from her seizure last week. She was a grand age but it’s always so tough to lose a beloved pet. She was just awesome and I’ll miss her.
The utter distain the government is showing towards the north by not communicating potential new lockdown measures clearly to local councils, mayor etc, is staggering. The mood in the north is really not good: people rightly feeling very upset, confused and scared.
What wonderful news to wake to. My dad & I have spent 9 months inside shielding...for him and many others like him this news makes the difference between being able to have cancer treatment safely or not, of treatment continuing. Lots of tears of relief in this house this morn!
Fun fact: before I was a journalist, I was an English teacher & head of dept. I loved my job but then, well, Michael Gove happened. Anyhow - if you have teens who need help with lang/lit/media related work at home, email (link in bio) & I’ll send work to keep them busy & you sane
I always used to spend hours as a kid in WHSmith in Stockport flicking through the mags I couldn’t afford but would dream of writing for one day. Back home and I’m in that same shop today, my cover on the shelf!!
Today is VACCINE DAY for my dad and I don’t think either of us could honestly be more excited for (a) THE ACTUAL VACCINE or (b) the fact we’re leaving the house after being inside for MONTHS. Dizzy with all the excitement, ha!
In 2018
@GlassAnimals
drummer Joe Seward nearly died following a horrific road accident. For this week’s
@NME
Big Read, I sat down with Joe & the band to hear about his incredible road to recovery & how that & so much more has influenced their new album
My darling dad, Timothy, sadly passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was so incredibly brave throughout and never complained, even on the hardest of treatment days. He passed peacefully at home and I was able to be by his side until the end. He was the best.
I spoke to a lot of music fans about their experiences at festivals and stadium gigs this summer and what they told me made for some very grim reading. Music fans deserve so much more. Here's my long-read for
@NME
“Brandon Flowers is basically saying it doesn’t matter what Morrissey says, he’s still a revered icon...I think that’s bullshit and I think Brandon Flowers is bullshit. It does matter. It absolutely matters.." Here's my interview with
@keleokereke
for
@NME
Last night, a man started to mansplain Brexit to me. Reader, I took off my cardigan and revealed my ‘Frankie Says Fuck Brexit’ t-shirt and I have never, ever been happier with my Saturday night fashion choices. Frankie shut him up, I can tell you.
Today is my dad’s 72nd birthday. Two years ago he was given just months to live after a cancer diagnosis and to get here really does feel like a massive two fingers to that awful illness. Happy Birthday to this legend x
A great piece from Laura here again highlighting what an absolute shit show this years festival announcements have been for female artists. As quoted in the article, “It’s not an accident any more, it’s a statement of exclusion.”
It would be nice, for once, if guys on festival bills stood in solidarity with women and refused to play them until y’know, women are stood alongside them as equals and headliners, as it damn well should be.
Remembering Dan today on what would have been his 37th birthday. I’ll be listening to a lot of Wilco today and of course, watching You Only Move Twice. He was the very best of us.
Remembering Dan today on what would have been his 32nd birthday. Going to raise a glass to him later on whilst watching his favourite episode of The Simpsons. I’m going to play The Bends really loudly and I’m going to read his wonderful writing, remembering his brilliance...
Loved contributing to this excellent Record Collector special on
@duranduran
, our next month! I wrote an essay all about their excellent last album, ‘Future Past’. Out next month and you can order here!
Thrilled to have spoken to a very jubilant
@michaelkiwanuka
this evening following his
#HyundaiMercuryPrize
win! “It’s definitely encouraged me to keep dreaming big”
My dad is back home after a long chemotherapy stint and I couldn’t be more relieved. Happy to report he’s sat in his comfy chair enjoying a huge slice of cake and a good brew from his favourite mug. *Relief*
I had a lovely chat with The Cure’s co-founder
@LolTolhurst
about his ace new goth book. We spoke about The Cure’s goth leanings, the importance of Bowie & Joy Division to goth, plus an emotive memory about the time he met Ian Curtis. Read on
@nme

Saying goodbye to my wonderful dad yesterday was one of the hardest things I’ve faced so far in my life. But a lot of peace came yesterday after a beautiful service and send-off and hearing people’s wonderful memories of dad.
Amazing how blokes in bands signed to labels/on covers don't get a jot of criticism but when it’s women? Wet Leg/Picture Parlour/LDP…it’s off the charts? Coincidence much?!
“The working-class experience is too brutal for people. They don’t want to hear it” - caught up with
@sleafordmods
to talk about their ace new album, our awful bloody government & why the working classes are still forgotten - read now on
@whynowworld
!
This thread is heartbreaking.
@AvantiWestCoast
do this shit every single day and our government let them carry on regardless. The north has no functioning travel system to London right now and it’s affecting people’s work, lives, relationships. It’s a shitshow and nobody cares.
My train from Manchester to London was fine so of course the one home has been CANCELLED with no more trains leaving tonight. Which means a train to Birmingham and then a bus to Manchester. HOW IS THIS OK
*Deep breath* I spoke to Jeff Goldblum (!!!) about his ace new jazz EP for
@EveningStandard
& he was everything I hoped he would be & more. It got quite emotional speaking about Sam Neill, turning 70 & his own family. Oh and he sang some songs! An honour❤️
It’s new
@empiremagazine
day and it’s a wonderful, very special issue curated by the mighty
@edgarwright
about the sheer joy of cinema. It’s a blast and you can grab a copy today - just look at that list of contributors!
It’s been the longest year and I’m ready for a break. Thanks to everyone who has kindly commissioned me, read my work & shared my work over the last year. I’m checking out now until the new year to spend some much needed time with my family. Much love and as ever

Bored of culture magazines that give an absolutely overwhelming number of by-lines to men when there are many, many, MANY female writers out there ready, willing and ridiculously able to write these features too.
Today, my family, friends and I gathered to celebrate my dad’s life in a way we couldn’t when he passed away in lockdown. It would have been his birthday and I cannot tell you the joy of seeing a packed gathering sharing so many treasured memories of my dad. A much needed day ❤️
I spoke to the nicest man in acting, aka George MacKay, for this month’s
@FlauntMagazine
cover feature. Contains a brilliantly funny anecdote about his preparation for upcoming film ‘Wolf’ - and much, much more. Give it a read here!
As part of Kid A/Amnesiac’s anniversary celebrations, I spoke to the long term
@radiohead
collaborator
@StanleyDonwood
about how art played a crucial role in the emergence of these wonderful albums. Give it a read over on
@IndyMusic
here:
Just look at this cover! 😍 Thrilled to have a feature in next week’s issue about all the great television we have to look forward to in 2022. Be sure to grab a copy next week!

I’ve just spent the day writing a piece about Sinead O’Connor and revelling in how incredible she was, how important, how ground breaking. I am absolutely devastated.
Got my Glastonbury accreditation through today and admit I had a little cry of happy tears because oh my god have I missed it! I love covering the festival - absolute joy of joys.
I also went to see the wonderful
@GlassAnimals
in Manchester at the weekend. It was a real joy to see Joe back and looking so well. Here's my review for
@NME
As a northern writer, it still devastates me how few regional voices exist in prominent publications - and especially in cultural journalism. If you’re not London based and don’t have the connections, it’s a mountain to climb for so many - and it really shouldn’t be.
Thread...
Even though it's been a year today since Dan passed away, there are times it still doesn't feel real, times I still struggle to process it. A lot is said about the negativity of social media, but over the last year, it's been a huge source of support as...
It’s been such a difficult few months for my dad but he’s here, against all the odds, and is still fighting his illness with superhuman strength. We’re having a picnic and a special day out.
For one of my final cover features of the year, I had the *mother* of all conversations with Claire Foy about her brilliant new
@PhelpsieSarah
penned drama A Very British Scandal, how therapy saved her & why she’s had more than enough of the patriarchy
Today it’s my lovely dad’s birthday and I couldn’t be happier that he’s home and able to celebrate after going through so much treatment over the past few months. And yes, I have baked him the mother of all birthday cakes 🍰 🎂
It was a joy to interview the wonderful Rebecca Ferguson for this month’s stunning edition of
@empiremagazine
- very proud to be a part of such a special issue
For
@nme
I spoke to
@The_Anchoress
about her excellent new cover of
@neworder
, her upcoming new album and tour - and how playing Europe is simply impossible for many artists now since Brexit. We also spoke about
@thecure
&
@eltonofficial
!
Tay-Tay mania hits London! Thrilled to have written today’s
@EveningStandard
front page all about how London is rolling out the red carpet for
@taylorswift13
’s arrival. Thank you so much to everyone who spoke to me for this - was a lot of fun to write!
It was really wonderful chatting to
@elliegoulding
for today’s
@EveningStandard
’s culture cover. We spoke about motherhood, the power of being surrounded by women and her fantastic new album. In print today - go grab a copy!
The heroes at the local cancer hospital where dad is being treated had him in and out in less than half an hour this morning. They were bloody incredible. Thank you,
@TheChristieNHS
I want to see more female writers on the pages of my favourite mags writing features. Not them being given tiny little space fillers - features. Proper features. It’s 2022 and god I’m weary this conversation is still going on. It should be a given.
Had a couple of visits to a&e this week with a long standing heart condition and honestly I’ve never seen it as broken. No equipment, no nurses, no doctors, waiting times of 12+ hours.
I was invited to take part in a small Q&A event with the mighty Nick Cave recently. Still can't quite believe it happened! We talked about the art of conversation, grief, love, new music & his visit to the coronation - read now over on
@EveningStandard
I met up with the band of the moment,
@lastdinnerparty
& here is my piece on them for today’s
@ESCulture
cover. Not nepo babies, not industry plants, play & write all their own music, worked bloody hard to get here. They had lots to say about all this!
Would have been my lovely dad’s birthday today. His resting place borders a beautiful park and hills and it’s very peaceful. Spent some time there on a beautiful spring day thinking about happier times. He was the very best.
I've just cashed in the last of the money raised at the cricket match in Dan's memory - a massive £2050 in total for
@JDRFUK
! It brings the total raised to over £10,300 which is just incredible. A massive thanks to everyone who came along, helped & donated
I was also thrilled to speak to the force of nature that is
@SELFESTEEM___
for the first issue of
@rollingstoneuk
- her album is one of the best of the year and I loved our chat.
