My article, "We know what attention is!" is out in @TrendsCognSci . it argues that our experimental methodology commits us to a simple functional conception of attention. In that sense, we agree on and know what attention is. I will thread about it later.

A random thought on hiring: I would have thought a good rule of thumb is don't hire someone when all the letters of recommendation from previous coworkers are: "ABSOLUTELY DO NOT hire this guy!”.

@jgeller_phd @JamesSteeleII Well, for $5,000 you can purchase a signed copy of the book! There's no used copy I've found for less than $100, and most are listed at $200+. Seems a bit ambitious to me even if it's a fun read and sure by a Nobel prize winner who sadly is no longer with us.

If you want a short introduction to attention (or want to pass it on to your students), please have a look at the articles on attention and much else at the new Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science. More articles are forthcoming. Attention

If you're a cognitive scientist in the US who likes philosophy, you might enjoy reading this: attention, intention, agency, working memory, reasoning, bias, introspection. Not cheap (sorry, not my choice), but it's on a decent discount (35%) @ Amazon

Just overheard a group of VSSers talking about the state of cog neuro on the beach. Kripke, Davidson and DiCarlo in the same breath. Sounded like a fun and interesting conversation. 👍 #vss2024

@CoreyJMaley @DLBarack @okdaniellle Well I looked at the article David posted and I just don’t see the recognition of the specific type of explanation marr wanted. So yeah it can then seem perplexing why the functional account in the comp theory is so crucial. But it seems that one has then misread Marr.
