Today the AU in collaboration with my office and Justice for All (JFA) has organized a legal community consultation on the draft AU Convention on the Elimination of VAW and Girls. It was an opportunity to emphasize the role of judges, lawyers and prosecutors to interpret and enforce laws to solve societal problems. Such engagement will continue at the continental level. At the Forum we condemned the rape and killing of girl children singling out the latest victim Simbo Birhanu.

AU's Legal and Justice STC has deliberated and approved the AU Draft convention on violence against women and girls. Following subsequent approvals, this will be a wonderful New Year’s gift to African women. Glad to reconnect with H.E. Minister of Justice of Rwanda and also for doing some sight seeing of beautiful Zanzibar. Abundance of peace in this coming year.

I had the opportunity to give a keynote speech at the prestigious 2024 Annual Founder's Lecture of the Univesity of South Africa (UNiSA) on the topic “Delivering Justice in Africa - Are women active or passive agents?” This keynote was attended by nearly 300 government officials, judges, lawyers, members of the academia and civil society representatives. The speech attracted substantive media attention. Thank you Vice -Chancellor LinkaBula for making possible such a productive exchange.

Today, the Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL) and the African Union in collaboration with my office launched the Gender Equality in Law Campaign at the regional level. Furthermore, the Women's Excellence in Law and Leadeship Acadamy (WELLA ) Ethiopia chapter has also launched under my patronage. It was an exciting day for women in the legal profession. Enat Bank was founded by a group of women in 2014 and now has 167 branches. We first decided to name the branches after prominent women. The board has decided to name subsequent branches after the founders. I am so proud to have led this unique initiative.
