Sometimes heraldry can feature strange creatures. This little guy found in the arms of a Grassauer (Grassower, Grassawer etc.) family is thought originally to have been a "devil" or "demon" but in later centuries was simply rendered as a bear.

Today, October 26th is Austria's National Day! The so called "Bindenschild" born by the eagle today is famously associated with the Habsburgs however it actually even predates their rule of the region and originally belonged to the Babenberg dynasty.

Today, October 3rd, is German Unity Day. Let's take a look at the design history of the eagle in democratic Germany. The current design dates back to the late Weimar Republic and was created in 1926 by Tobias Schwab and first officially adopted in 1928.
