After his first semester at Vanderbilt, Greysen Carter’s family lost their home in a wildfire. Then, he was cut from the team. But after a second chance with the
#VandyBoys
, Carter is back, now armed with a 100 mph fastball and a new perspective:
-first Hmong American to make it to the Olympics
-first Asian woman to win the Olympic individual all around (of any nationality)
-only the third nonwhite women’s Olympic all-around champion
Suni Lee, what a moment 🤩
You gotta hand this to Tennessee: they did the impossible. They found a way to get Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Arkansas fans to agree on something
#VandyBoys
and Lipscomb players have joined together in a circle before taking the field for warmups. Lipscomb pitcher Logan Van Treeck was addressing both squads
Vanderbilt students are on break right now, but the ones who are still here stormed the field. Vanderbilt beats Florida, 31-24, and will face Tennessee with bowl eligibility on the line
some ~ personal news~: I'm thrilled to announce that I'm the next Vanderbilt beat writer for
@Tennessean
! I start with the SEC baseball tournament in a few weeks. Humbled to have this opportunity and I can't wait to get to work.
During the MSU game, a Michigan fraternity hung a sign referencing Larry Nassar. That's not appropriate. Neither are the other, less immediately repulsive ways fans weaponize scandals in rivalries.
My column, on an issue very important to me:
Several NFL scouts reportedly believe Anthony Richardson “paved the way” for Joe Milton to potentially be a high selection in next year’s NFL Draft.
Richardson is currently listed at 6’4”, 244 pounds.
Milton is currently listed at 6’5”, 243 pounds.
Similar to Richardson,
Yankees fans, I can promise you this: Spencer Jones is so fun to watch. Was doing cool stuff on all sides of the ball at Vanderbilt. I’m not going to make *that* comparison bc it’s not fair to him, but take it from a Vandy beat writer: you’ll love him
Last week, when Jordan Poole was asked how he improved on ball-handling, he was quick to credit a student manager he'd become close with. Here's how the two worked together to facilitate that improvement:
just wanna point out the greatest stat I have ever found on reddit: as John Smoltz calls world series games, he or a teammate of his has appeared in every world series for 40 years
Vanderbilt wins, 75-66. Will Wade complained about Vanderbilt getting all the foul calls and LSU managed to attempt 12 more free throws than the Commodores....and still lost by nine. So there's that
10-year-old Asher Sullivan was critically injured after getting swept into a storm drain after flash flooding Wednesday. Family photos showed Asher in Vanderbilt gear at Hawkins Field.
Tim Corbin invited Asher’s brother, Declan, into the dugout today:
Dawn Staley on Shea Ralph: "She didn't have a whole lot of talent, a lot of injuries, she found a way to get her kids to play for 40 minutes no matter what the score was and now that she has talent, you can see she's going to find herself right in the top of our league"
by the way, “non-revenue” is a misnomer. many non-revenue sports actually do make revenue — just not for the athletic department. they make the school money through their tuition tho!! any discussion about revenue-sharing — start there.
shout out to Vanderbilt athletics for walking me to my car after night games. it's a nice thing to do for a woman alone at night (esp when I don't remember where I parked...lol) + I've had multiple comms personnel and coaches come with me, which you don't see everywhere
I ranked every team in regionals based on an average of 5 computer ranking systems (RPI, Elo, Massey, KPI and DSR). Each team was given a score based on that average. Here are some takeaways on the matchups based on that...
Number of national TV games for SEC baseball teams in 2024:
Alabama: 8
Arkansas: 9
Auburn: 8
Florida: 11
Georgia: 8
Kentucky: 8
LSU: 13
Mississippi State: 8
Missouri: 8
Ole Miss: 11
South Carolina: 8
Tennessee: 12
Texas A&M: 9
Vanderbilt: 9
the thing about the people who say they don't get why anyone prefers college football because the NFL is a far superior product is that they don't realize that a subset of college football fans love it because they take perverse enjoyment in bad football
on behalf of the whole Michigan beat, I would like to notify the TV networks that Michigan is not good enough to be in primetime and just need to be at noon every game going forward. please and thank you
Throughout the SEC tournament,
#VandyBoys
will be wearing helmet stickers honoring Asher Sullivan, a Middle Tennessee boy who died after being swept into a storm drain:
my freshman year of high school I messaged a guy in my algebra II class to ask what the homework was and he just responded to it FIVE YEARS LATER to tell me it was "just the odds"
1. Fall is the nicest time of year to have a wedding in many places
2. The wedding is for the couple, they can schedule their wedding when they want + if you’d rather watch football than go to their wedding you’re probably not actually that close to the couple so just don’t go?
Thank you to the
#VandyBoys
fans, families, current/former players and everyone else who followed along this season. I had a lot of fun and I hope y’all did too
a Friday ~personal news~ dump for y'all: I have accepted an internship this summer with
@SunSentinel
and
@Sentinel_Sports
! I'm super excited for this opportunity and can't wait to get started post-graduation
think people don't click on women's sports? I analyzed 48 features written in the michigan daily between march 2019 and now. eight of the top 24 were on women's sports, despite women's sports stories making up just under a third of the sample.
FINAL: Xavier 2, Vanderbilt 1.
Vanderbilt's season ends with a whimper. Despite an SECT victory, the Dores are headed home early.
It's the first time losing in regionals back-to-back years since 2008-09, and the first time not making the regional final since 2016.
College football is a heavily male-dominated space. But at Vanderbilt, where 10 of 23 listed support staffers are female, the women of Vanderbilt football have formed a unique bond while setting a standard for what women can and do bring to the table:
It shouldn’t surprise anyone who followed his career at Oregon that Mario Cristobal is struggling. He’s exhibit A of coaches who think that football is played strictly on recruiting websites and not on the field
drew rasmussen threw a perfect game in 2015, the only one in oregon state history. then he had two tommy john surgeries while still in college. being on the mound again, pitching in the majors is already beating the odds...let alone being nearly perfect, again
We will resume production on 11/30 with a series of interim guest hosts from the Jeopardy! family – starting with Ken Jennings. Additional guest hosts to be announced.
Corbin: "This game has a way of coming back around to people who treat it well. And we do. ... The game is very easy for that group right now across the street, they're playing very well, the game's difficult for us right now. But it's not always going to be that way."
Griffin Herring is not getting the love he deserves in some of the all-conference teams I've seen posted here.
Fun fact: Among pitchers with at least 30 innings in SEC play, Herring had *the* best ERA. His 1.14 topped Hagen Smith's 1.35
got asked by multiple people at the media entrance if I was a scout. I’ve never gotten that one before but I like the idea that a female scout is normalized enough that they thought I was one
The
#VandyBoys
won their fourth SEC Tournament championship with a 10-4 victory over Texas A&M. Here’s the dogpile as Nick Maldonado got a double play to end it:
When asked if he would commit to Reilly as the Sunday starter going forward, Corbin said he wasn't in the mood to answer that, then he said "I just want to take a hammer and hit myself over the head"
hey PSA: being vaccinated does NOT mean you can invite your friends over for a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame
From the time I was a little girl, I had ushers at minor league games express surprise that a girl my age was out there keeping score. I’m grateful every day that I could turn that energy into a career. Happy National Girls and Women in Sport Day!

Here’s Tim Corbin talking about his personal connection to the Covenant School and how Vanderbilt and Lipscomb came together to honor the shooting victims:
Got an email today asking me to "STOP talking about Vandy baseball in the paper."
I regret to inform you that I will continue talking about Vandy baseball in the paper
Hello Vandy fans! Get to know me:
1. I’m from Grand Rapids, Michigan + graduated from umich
2. I tweet about women’s sports a lot
3. I love Taylor Swift (justice for Lover)
4. During football season I yell about playcalling, no team goes for it on fourth down enough
Spoke with Tim Corbin today who confirmed Nick Maldonado and Thomas Schultz are coming back for their senior years. He said, “sometimes the best recruits are your returning players.” Will have more in a story this evening
Female sports writers (students or professional): reply to this tweet with your favorite story you've written in the past year! Let's build a reading list for the time without sports full of work by amazing, talented women ⬇️
also relevant: Michigan is playing like a team that believes there IS something left to play for. Has faded in previous seasons after getting two losses
According to a release, RJ Schreck was named Academic All-American after having a 4.0 GPA in his master's program this year. He is the first Academic All-American from Vanderbilt baseball in the Tim Corbin era
#VandyBoys
Not enough pics exist of me doing my job but this one will suffice.
Happy National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Despite the comments about whether I’m there to date players or if I’m lost in a venue, I’m grateful to do this every day 🫶

shortstop commit RJ Austin is pulling his name out of the MLB Draft and coming to campus, along with Andrew Dutkanych. First reported by
@kileymcd
I was about to ask Beilein a question today when he whips around, looks at me and says, “I know you want to ask me a question, the tall people are overpowering you!”
Asian women are so stereotyped in gymnastics, they're seen as these tiny prepubescent girls who are only good on bars and/or beam, Suni herself has said she doesn't like being seen only as a bars specialist and she proved today that she is far more than just her bars
Vanderbilt not only won a road series against a team that had not lost a home series since 2019....but did it on the backs of two freshmen pitchers who have really stepped up at the right time
James Madison infielder Mike Mancini has committed to
#VandyBoys
, he announced on Instagram.
In 2024, Mancini hit .329 with 10 doubles, three triples and 15 home runs. He is best known for hitting 4 homers in one day against South Carolina + NC State in the Raleigh Regional
FINAL: Vanderbilt 63, Florida 57.
Vanderbilt is 2-0 in the SEC for the first time in 11 years. Not a believer in Shea Ralph yet? It’s a good time to start
Tim Corbin provided a bit more context on this postgame, he said it was a prayer circle and that Lipscomb had called earlier today to suggest it. They decided to donate the proceeds + the two teams decided to have the prayer circle pregame. "Local teams celebrating a community"
Mark Dantonio resigned amid scandal and MSU installed Mike Tressel as the interim. Luke Fickell said no, which may force MSU to use the first yearlong interim in the Big Ten since...Luke Fickell, who got the job when Jim Tressel resigned amid scandal!
first official day of work today! just paperwork and whatnot but I'm so excited to get going with
@Tennessean
. My email is agerson
@gannett
.com to get in touch 😎
Mind-blowing stat: Between 2014-18, there has been only ONE pitcher who signed with Vanderbilt, spent at least three years in the program, has completed his college career and did not get drafted. That person signed as an UDFA after the five-round 2020 draft
First day with
@usatodaysports
(Grand Rapids, Michigan bureau)! Thank you so much to
@AWSM_SportMedia
for this opportunity and to everyone at USA Today for allowing me to work remotely this summer. Can’t wait to get started!
there's one group this doesn't mention, too — student sports journalists, many of whom missed out on vital opportunities to get clips, or secured internships for the summer but don't know if they'll happen, or don't know how they'll get jobs with no sports to cover
it really is not discussed enough how in Tim Corbin's first game at Vanderbilt 20 years ago, Justin Verlander threw a 12-strikeout complete game shutout
a quick search on college football reference tells me that Vanderbilt last scored more than 56 points against Presbyterian in 2012. they haven't scored 56 on an FBS team since long before FBS was a thing — beating Louisville 68-0 in 1941
there are people, not fans of either team, who are going to tune into UConn/Vanderbilt on purpose, not because they think it will be good, but because they know it will be bad, and they are morbidly curious just how bad it can get
#VandyBoys
signee Braden Holcomb confirmed to me that it's official: He'll be on campus in the fall.
A high school shortstop with big power, Holcomb could play right away at third base, DH or potentially the outfield in 2024
congrats to NC State, who can no longer say their biggest accomplishment in the past 4 decades was claiming that they would have won a baseball natty if their players were vaccinated
Vanderbilt has won the national championship in bowling. It's their third title in bowling, surpassing baseball for the team with the most titles on campus
