In the past 12 months, our owner and chairman has seen increasing criticism (some of it fair, particularly r.e. Foster), but it’s important to remember that Argyle would not be in the Championship without Hallett. He was even more important than Schuey. Here’s why 👇 #pafc

You know what was nice about this weekend other than winning? Watching Argyle's game back and really enjoying it. We played well & deserved to win. There were lots of positives (see below), but I think that's the biggest. That was possibly our best performance of 2024 #pafc

Al Hajj topped the league for assists, xA, chances created, and big chances created, second for completed dribbles, in spite of relegation, and seemingly playing with worse players, so I'm not fussed about the fact he was relegated tbh. Looks like an Azaz-style creator #pafc

It's only three games (one an outlier given 10 men for an hour) so I'm waiting for more data, but this is the huge worry for me thus far. Argyle are creating nothing so far. There's a reason we're comfortably the lowest xG in the league #pafc
Chance Quality (npxG/Shot) vs Shot Distance: #WBA are extremely impressive for quality chances close to goal, followed by #DCFC & #SCFC , though slightly further away. #PAFC struggle to create, while #QPR also average low xG/shot numbers despite these coming close to goal.

Argyle haven't recorded an xG score above 1.0 in a league match since the 1-0 win v Rotherham; seven games have passed since. Argyle's average league xG since start of Feb is 0.81, just below our goals/game of 0.95 in the same period. Needs to improve, quickly #pafc

Which finally brings me back to the starting point. Why Hallett is the main reason we're in the Championship. When he took over, our annual income as a L1 side was c. £6m. In 2021/22 it was £12m, a club record. 22/23: £15m, another club record.

Elfsborg qualify on pens, Baidoo scoring theirs. If nothing else, I have at least wasted an evening keeping an eye on a boring UEL qualifying game, so hooray for me #pafc

Argyle were a pioneering club r.e. Matchday Moments. Nearly every EFL club offers something like this now, but only a handful did at that time. Particularly back when all you got was EFL short and extended highlights, living in London I absolutely loved it 💚 #pafc

Excluding Cooper, who we expect to be replaced quickly, #pafc currently have a net loss of two players this summer. 8 out (4 loans expiring, 2 released, 2 sold), 6 in (3 signings, 3 loans). You'd hope there are more signings to come, given the claimed budget increase

He used his own investment to secure Lowe, Schuey, and a core of that Bury set-up to transform Adams' functional, structured play into a more attacking, attractive approach, which drew Argyle's highest ever average L2 attendance

Between 2015 and 2021, Argyle finished in either the top third of the basement division or the bottom third of the third tier, the exception being that mad run in 2017/18

Yes, Schuey was critical to promotion. I don’t want to undermine his role. Given his achievement, he’s got a claim to our best ever manager. But he doesn’t win promotion without the quality we were able to assemble through a significantly improved budget, thanks to Hallett

Which brings me back to my midfield frustration. It appears Argyle had the money to upgrade CM (hence the club-record bid for Baidoo). It just wasn't prioritised (or left too late) in spite of all the evidence pointing to it as one of our biggest weaknesses. Frustrating. #pafc

Apparently another Elfsborg player (Qasem, winger) is the subject of a £3m bid from Empoli. Given their transfer window closed Monday, I wonder if that bid (if true) impacts ours. Doubt Elfsborg want to lose both with no chance to replace either #pafc

Okay, so this started as a medium thread about how Bundu has struggled in the opening two league games, but spun off to look at what I think is Rooney's wider tactical plan and some early concerns about it #pafc

The Grandstand redevelopment, dramatically improved training facilities, and a permanent home for our academy are more important than some seem to realise

Brent had stabilised the finances and our annual turnover had risen to c. £6m, giving a footballing budget estimated at c. £3.5m when Hallett took over. Make no mistake, when Hallett became the majority owner, we were not ready for the Championship. Not even close.

Between 02/01/10 and 01/01/20, Home Park's three highest attended games were: 1. Liverpool (FA Cup, 19/01/17): 17,048 2. Newcastle (FA Cup, 02/01/10): 16,541 3. Swindon (League Two, 01/01/20): 15,062, the first game the redeveloped Grandstand was fully open #pafc

Simon Hallett inherited a club whose budget and infrastructure was essentially that of a League One/Two yo-yo club. You might not like to read that, but that's what it was. Remember the pre-2017 years when the training ground regularly flooded during the winter?

In recent years, Hallett has invested tens of millions building infrastructure that is worth far more long-term than just pouring money into the first team-squad. Argyle were decades behind our League One rivals a few years back, let aone Champ, but we're rapidly catching up.

All of which brings us back to revenue. Fans moan that Hallett doesn't spend enough on the team. This is wrong. He spends his money indirectly on the team by raising long-term revenue (at a profit)

This was a direct result of Hallett's plan to expand the stadium's capacity, provide a brand of football to attract supporters, and increase our presence in the community. He set a strategy to raise attendances, and succeeded

They tried to retain him with a record contract offer, then set a high target or £6m (which he wasn’t worth given the factors noted above) and played hard ball to drive the price as high as possible. Maybe they could have got more, but they’ve hardly rolled over. #pafc

Accounts for the past season won't be out for a few months yet, but that figure will have risen to at least £22m I think, another club record.

But the real income is hospitality and events, which brought in £5.5m from 2021/22 and 2022/23 combined. By the end of this season, hospitality and events alone is forecast to have more than paid off the entire cost of the stadium

And, of course, a reminder that the fee being reported could be wrong, such as it appears to have been for Ladapo #pafc

The £2m is just a rumour. One that, I should add, does not tally with weeks of rumours about a £3m transfer fee, so let’s not just take it as gospel and lose our shit. Reminder, the press reported Ladapo was £500k+, but our accounts show £1.1m transfer income that year #pafc

After thinking about it for a while, this is probably the tweak I'd suggest for Rooney's formation. The most important adaptations for me are: the extra attacker committed in the attacking phase; CAM occupying the centre; concentration of players on either flank #pafc

I've seen some interesting opinions on what Argyle need to do differently in the past few days, but I think Rooney needs to (and will) focus on doing the basics better. Evolution, not revolution, which we've seen in each league game this far #pafc

Worth remembering that if we lose Cooper for free, it’s not just c.£3m we’re missing out on, it’s also the sell on %, which could be as much as £6m etc, and maybe performance triggered extras e.g. for promotion. Plus, you know, we might not stay up even with Cooper… #pafc

Overall, I think that Argyle are a quality CM from a mid-table finish, but an injury or two in the wrong positions (especially Mumba/Whittaker) from relegation. But that was an impressive display, and I'm actually excited for the next game now, a rare feeling for me in 2024
