yes! these translations are by Geoffrey Brock (who joins Ingeborg Bachmann as a translator of Ungaretti's). in Brock's afterword, he writes that Ungaretti wrote these in the trenches on "military postcards, the margins of old newspapers, blank spaces in letters he had received."
